RoseColoredGirl Ranks and Reviews Every Sofia Carson Song! In 2020 and early 2022, I’ve done two full discography rankings and reviews for two underrated Disney artists, Sabrina Carpenter and Bridgit Mendler. Besides these two, I also follow Sofia Carson, who I feel is another criminally underrated artist who got her start with Disney. Sofia got her start with the Disney film series Descendants, and began a solo career shortly after the first film was released. Sofia has a very unique style of music, often utilizing electronic pop/dance pop in her songs as a stylistic choice, even in some sad songs. I find her vocal range to be incredibly versatile to whatever she is singing, often switching from light, airy vocals to deeper, more powerful ones. After six years of releasing only singles, she has finally released her debut album. This felt like a fun opportunity to do a review and ranking of her discography. I really debated including the songs from Descendants since I included all of Bridgit’s Lemonade Mouth tracks, but ultimately, they will not be included here. There are over 20 of them, and they all sound like the same generic track about being evil (seriously, one can only take so much of songs with repetitive titles and concepts like “Good Is the New Bad, “Good to Be Bad,” and “Ways to Be Wicked” lol). Sofia often had limited solo vocals in these songs anyway, as the entire cast was singing most of these songs with her. I did include two songs from A Cinderella Story as bonuses, and “Wildside,” her song for Adventures in Babysitting with Sabrina Carpenter, is included in the main rankings as it’s actually quite decent compared to some of these other awful tracks. I also did not include the covers Sofia has posted on YouTube or done for movies. The ranking will consist of all 25 songs in Sofia’s discography (32 as of February 23, 2024), as well as four bonuses from various films Sofia has starred in. The rankings will begin on Monday, May 16 and conclude on Saturday, June 11. I’m excited to review another artist’s discography, and I hope you enjoy these rankings!
For future reference in case the rankings ever shift due to her putting new material out (since I can't edit post order), here is a running list of the rankings:
32. Glowin' Up 31. Different World (Alan Walker featuring K-391, Corsak and Sofia Carson) 30. Loud 29. Joke's on Me 28. I Hope You Know 27. Blue Side of the Sky 26. Cómo, Cuándo y Dónde 25. Always (Siempre) 24. Applause 23. I Didn't Know 22. Back to Beautiful 21. Still Love You 20. I Hate the Way 19. Stay 18. Come Back Home 17. Grey Area (with Grey) 16. Love Is the Name 15. Miss U More Than U Know 14. Wildside (with Sabrina Carpenter) 13. I'm Gonna Love You 12. Rumors (with R3hab) 11. Ins & Outs 10. San Francisco (with Galantis) 9. It's Only Love, Nobody Dies 8. Guess I'm a Liar 7. Timeless 6. He Loves Me, But.. 5. Sugar 4. Hold Onto Me 3. Fool's Gold 2. I Luv U (feat. R3hab) 1. Two Tears in a Bucket

25. Glowin' Up
Standout lyric: None Album: Non-album single (2021)
I just can’t with some of these generic kiddy songs that strip the artist of all their personality….that pretty much sums this one up lol. The upbeat production sounds fine, but Sofia sounds super generic and there’s no real energy to this song.

24. Different World (Alan Walker feat. K-391, Corsak and Sofia Carson)
Standout lyric: “We've been chasing our demons down an empty road” Album: Different World (2018)
This song is featured on Alan Walker’s album Different World. I feel bad about ranking this song so low, but I really don’t care for Alan and Sofia’s productions. The flow of the verses is pretty solid, but once we get to the chorus, Sofia’s voice sounds really generic. It doesn’t have much personality to it and feels like it’s just kinda there. The chorus also feels a bit angsty in like an artificial way, if that makes sense? The production doesn’t sound that good. It fits okay with Sofia’s vocals, but it feels like Sofia’s voice doesn’t really shine through and she had to make them sound more generic for it to fit. Lyrically, the song deals with realizing how you are currently living is not how you want to live, or how you perceive that your life should be. The song could also be interpreted as discussing how tumultuous the world is in general with oppression, global warming, and other social issues. I like the potential dual-meaning of the song, however, it is so generic that it doesn’t really allow for much of an interpretation. I also find it odd that the first three people credited on the song are all producers; none of the credited artists have any vocals other than Sofia lol. While there are a few examples of it working well, I sort of feel this falls into the “too many cooks in the kitchen” category, where there are so many producers on this song that their styles aren’t able to mix in a natural-sounding way. Overall, this is one of my least favorite Sofia songs due to the genericness, over-angstiness, and the production sounding too oversaturated because of so many people producing this.

23. Loud
Standout lyric: “Confrontation never has been my strength / Always feel like I should take all the blame” Album: Sofia Carson (2022)
This is an interesting song, because I feel like this has all the makings of being an amazing song. The song is intended as an empowering track about refusing to let others keep you down, and raising your voice to fight for what you believe in. However, this is just really boring to me. The production doesn’t go anywhere, her voice doesn’t sound as powerful as it does in some other songs, and the lyrics come off a bit generic. Hypothetically, this should have been a great song and I am totally here for an empowerment track from Sofia. This just ended up being really boring though, in all aspects. I wasn’t happy they made this a single, as there are so many other better songs on the album.

22. Cómo, Cuándo y Dónde
Standout lyric: None Album: Sofia Carson (2022)
I really don’t have much to say about this song. It’s one of my least favorite songs on Sofia’s album, because it’s just kind of there. There’s nothing really special about it; her voice and the production are fine. I did, however, really like is that it was Sofia’s first all-Spanish song. The sentiment of "how are you, where are you, when are you coming home" is also interesting. I wish I had more to say here, but this is just kinda there and isn’t exciting or memorable at all.

21. Always (Siempre)
Standout lyric: “I’ve been playing hide and go seek with a heart that longs to be” Album: Feel the Beat Soundtrack (2020)
This is a sweet little ballad from the Feel the Beat soundtrack, which was for the record an amazing film. Besides the English version, “Always,” there is also a Spanish version titled “Siempre.” I think the piano sounds nice here, but in my opinion, both versions of the song are a little bland. I like the emotion she put into this song, but it just feels like it could be something a bit more and it really wasn’t. Similar to “Cómo, Cuándo y Dónde,” there’s nothing objectively wrong with the song, but it feels unmemorable and not something I’d return to.

20. Back to Beautiful
Standout lyric: “All these words starting wars, over who can hurt who more” Album: Non-album single (2016)
This is kind of an interesting song, but I feel it could be improved in a few ways. I was not a big fan of the drop or the choppy distortion of Sofia’s vocals. The drop goes on for too long, and happens so often in the song that the noises kind of become annoying by the time you make it to the end of the song. Sofia’s collaborations with DJs have overall been good, but I am not really a fan of her work with Alan Walker. I liked Alan’s collab with Sabrina, but for some reason the two he had with Sofia just didn’t do it for me. However, I do like Sofia’s voice, and the slow-build up of the first verse here. I thought the song had a good message as well, that we should just focus on the positives and the things that are beautiful about us, rather than trying to tear others down and hurt others. This is the better of the two collabs she has with Alan, but the super long drop really ruins it for me. Ultimately, the verses being decent is what puts this above the boring/unmemorable songs, but I don’t like the chorus.

BONUS: Full Throttle
Album: A Cinderella Story Soundtrack (2016)
Although I didn’t include any other Disney film tracks here as they were painfully generic and not representative of Sofia’s artistry, this is one I really liked. It’s from the soundtrack of A Cinderella Story, and while there’s little lyrical substance to analyze, I like this more rock sound for Sofia. While I don’t know if I’d like this type of production in every song, it works well here. It’s worth checking out if you have the time.

19. Still Love You
Standout lyric: “I could trace the fingerprints you left burning in my skin” Album: Sofia Carson (2022)
This is such a heartbreaking song! The song expresses Sofia’s deepest insecurities after a breakup, and vulnerably expresses wishing she was still in a relationship with her former love interest, even though they do not love her anymore. She vulnerably expresses wishing her love interest would just change their minds and want to be with her as badly as she wants to be with them. Sofia does an excellent job expressing the raw pain she is experiencing, and really pulls the listener into being sad along with her. The lethargic, moody production is quite a change from Sofia’s usual style, but I think it works well here. It’s ranked lower as it’s not one I’d return to, as I don’t want to be sad lol, but I have no real issues with the song.

18. Stay
Standout lyric: “You held me like the one thing you'd never lose / I held you at a distance, and it was cruel” Album: Sofia Carson (2022)
Love the switch-up in chorus here! I think that’s what most makes this song for me. The song discusses actively pushing someone away until they leave, which causes you to remember how much you actually appreciate the person. The lyrics are absolutely heartbreaking, and I love the up-and-down nature of the song’s production, as it feels accurate to how one might feel after a breakup. I really like how Sofia remains true to her typical electronic pop sound even with a really sad song like this. The dance-pop production always works well for her, even in these sad songs, and I’m happy she’s continued to use it.

17. Grey Area (with Grey)
Standout lyric: “If I told you what I want…would you give me what I really want?” Album: Non-album single (2019)
This is not one I had heard before doing these rankings. I was a bit worried about Sofia’s DJ collabs after the Alan Walker ones, but I must say they’ve all been really good. I really like the Grey’s production here! The fiddles sound nice, and I like the switch-up in production. I admittedly hadn’t expected Grey to contribute, as I thought he was just a producer that didn’t provide any vocals. I really liked his voice here and they sound great together. Their voices have a lot of chemistry with one another, and I would enjoy seeing them collaborate again someday. I’ll admit with the pause after “Just somebody that you're…” I thought she was going to rhyme “suck” with “fuck” lol. The title is a bit of a pun, since his name is grey, which is fun lol. Lyrically the song talks about being in a “grey area” with someone and being unsure where the relationship stands.

16. Love Is the Name
Standout lyric: “The way you let me in on secrets that are already mine” Album: Non-album single (2016)
This is such a cute little debut single. Sofia’s earlier songs didn’t quite have the amount of lyric depth as her later work, but that doesn’t mean this is any less good. Sofia’s playful vocals sound really good over the upbeat production. The song talks about empowering yourself and taking life as it comes. I am not really a huge fan of the J Balvin version. I generally enjoy J Balvin’s music, but his verse feels a bit forced and out of place. It almost falls into the “rent-a-rapper” territory, which is unfortunate. I typically listen to the Sofia solo version, which isn’t something I do with too many songs, but J Balvin’s random rap doesn’t fit with the tone of the song at all. Overall, this is a great, carefree little song that does a good job introducing Sofia’s artistic voice.

15. Ins & Outs
Standout lyric: “You got 21 questions, I got 21 answers” Album: Non-album single (2016)
I love the bouncy production on this song! Sofia’s excellent vocals combined with the upbeat feel makes this a super cute song once again. Lyrically, the song talks about getting to know someone on a deep level so you can better know how to show them love. The lyrics are a bit simple, which is why this is lower, but the excellent production brings the ranking of this song up quite a bit. This song apparently also was nominated for a “Best Crush Song” award at the Radio Disney Music Awards.

14. Rumors (with R3hab)
Standout lyric: “So let's pretend forever's only one night, one night” Album: The Wave (2018)
Sofia’s collaborations with R3hab are always amazing, and their first-ever collab is no different. The vocal range she displays in this song, along with the bouncy beat and the chorus switch-up is excellent. Lyrically, the track is a flirty, sensual song that talks about approaching a man who has a reputation for being a “bad boy,” while Sofia admits that she has also done “bad” things. While it’s probably the weakest of Sofia’s tracks with R3hab, it is still excellent which just goes to show how great their collabs are. This appears on R3hab’s album The Wave.

13. Guess I'm a Liar
Standout lyric: “Swore that if I ever lost you / I would sit and cry, but my eyes are dry” Album: Non-album single (2020)
I love how empowering this song is! Lyrically, Sofia talks about how heartbroken she was over a lost love, but then realizing how happy she is without her former love interest in her life. This song has such an uplifting message for anybody who has had a bad breakup, and pushes you to realize that you are happier without your former love interest in your life. The bouncy, dance-pop production complements the lyrics incredibly. Sofia’s strong vocals add to this message well and are guaranteed to make you at least a little more empowered in yourself.

BONUS: Stuck on the Outside
Album: A Cinderella Story Soundtrack (2016)
This has little of lyrical substance, but I thought the production was at least cute and sounded decent. What really stands out to me about this is how hopeful and optimistic the song feels. It sort of has a dreamy vibe and is worth checking out. This is from the soundtrack of A Cinderella Story. Not much else to say, but if you have time and want to listen to something cute, this is at least notably fun.

12. Miss U More Than U Know (featuring R3hab)
Standout lyric: None Album: Non-album single (2020)
I feel like R3hab should have some sort of contract to just produce all of Sofia’s singles, because their collabs are always so amazing. I suppose he has other artists to produce for, so oh well lol. The song talks about putting on a facade for an ex-lover, acting as if you no longer care about them, when they still mean a lot to you. Despite this, there aren’t really any particularly punchy or memorable lyrics here, but that doesn’t bring the song down at all in my opinion. The production is excellent combined with Sofia’s airy vocals, and the raw emotion contrasts with the dance-pop feel of the song. Another very memorable track from Sofia.

11. San Francisco (with Galantis)
Standout lyric: “Used to have a car before the repo” Album: Non-album single (2018)
I really love the vocal modulation on this song! It gives the song a dreamy, carefree vibe, and the production sounds excellent. Unlike her previous Alan Walker collabs, the beat drop sounds awesome here, and I like the delayed/looped effect at the end. Some of the oddly specific details in this song (Stevie Wonder, “used to have a car before the repo”) make it sound like it could be a Chainsmokers song haha. They were all very brief and weren’t ever overbearing, so I didn’t mind it. Lyrically, the song discusses remembering a night of enjoyment in San Francisco, specifically hinting that she wishes it could happen again and that she dreams of her love interest. The vocal effect on Sofia’s voice here was what made this song so good, and it’s one of my favorite Sofia collaborations.

10. Fool's Gold
Standout lyric: “Yes, my ego likes you, my intuition pulling back” Album: Sofia Carson (2022)
We are finally diving into the top 10! Despite how short this song is, I love the song and am happy it was the first single from the album. The production is among the catchiest in Sofia’s discography and her vocals sound amazing! I particularly like the echoey effect on “oh” and “soul” in the final chorus. The giggle in the intro is also an excellent touch. The song’s lyrics ponder whether a lover (or potential lover) is really dedicated to the relationship, or if they are just feigning their interest. I enjoy how the bridge explores her cautiousness due to past relationships, where Sofia trusted too easy and ultimately got hurt. This feels like a very relatable concept, at least to me, and the production makes this such a bop. I really wish this would have done better on pop radio; this really deserved to be the single that made Sofia break out as an artist.

9. He Loves Me, But...
Standout lyric: “He says it’s best for me…but I don’t really remember him asking me” Album: Sofia Carson (2022)
This song has really grown on me over time. It took a bit for me to warm up to this since it’s a bit different than Sofia’s typical style, but I really like the ominous production here along with the uncertain vocals. The song centers around Sofia being uncertain about how to perceive a lover, who attempts to control her through making decisions without her consent. I rarely find slow jams like this catchy, but the lyric “He says it’s best for me…but I don’t really remember him asking me” is super memorable to me. This is such a neat standout song that I find myself returning to quite a bit.

8. Wildside (with Sabrina Carpenter)
Standout lyric: “Don't wanna live my life by design / Locked inside, breaking” Album: Adventures in Babysitting Soundtrack (2016)
The 2016 Disney remake of Adventures in Babysitting was my first exposure to Sofia, and ultimately what led me to check out her music. On top of that, it also features my queen Sabrina Carpenter, so how could I hate this song? The song is tied into the movie quite a bit, as it is about how Sabrina’s character, Jenny Parker, is a perfectionist who lives firmly by the rules. Jenny never takes any risks at the beginning of the film, as she deems such things irresponsible. Throughout the film, Jenny begins to come out of her shell and become more spontaneous. The film doesn’t do a great job giving this message, because at the end, Jenny becomes completely irresponsible like her friend Lola (Sofia’s character), to the point of randomly telling a kid she’s babysitting that they can get a tattoo. The song ties into this because it is about going outside of your comfort zone and being open to whatever life brings. The song is such a bop, and I enjoy the message of it even if it wasn’t executed well in the film. The only thing I would say could be improved in this song is that the song seems generic if you haven’t seen the film, but oh well lol. I liked the film and would recommend checking it out. Sofia and Sabrina have amazing chemistry together, arguably the best of anyone either of them have ever collaborated with, and I’d love it if they would collaborate on a non-Disney film song someday!

7. I'm Gonna Love You
Standout lyric: “Fall down to the ground / Never seen nobody like you round town” Album: Non-album single (2016)
This song’s appeal comes from it being so freaking catchy! It is a bit repetitive and doesn’t have a lot of depth to the lyrics, but the song is a 100% certified bop and is guaranteed to be stuck in your head for at least a few hours after hearing it. One thing Sofia does really well in her artistry is writing really catchy hooks that flow so well. Albeit simple, this song perfectly demonstrates one of Sofia’s greatest strengths.

6. Timeless
Standout lyric: “My only was lonely, my heartbeat would hold me like every night” Album: Sofia Carson (2022)
Sofia really delivered her best with this first album. As always, her voice sounds amazing here and complements the bouncy production perfectly. Sofia’s voice portrays the chaotic emotions that may come along with this kind of infatuated love very well. The song lyrically discusses a delirious kind of love where you are living and breathing the person so much that you forget to focus on the rest of life. The rhythm and flow of this song is so catchy and it makes this song incredibly memorable to me. It’s one of my favorites from Sofia’s album and one that I return to quite a bit.

5. Sugar
Standout lyric: “Oh my god, the sweet paradise of you by my side” Album: Sofia Carson (2022)
Our queen delivers once again! Her vocals sound amazing here, and the chill, bouncy production accentuates her lyrics quite well. In the song, Sofia lyrically talks about becoming absolutely smitten over someone to the point of not being able to get enough for them. Her airy vocals and the affectionate tone of her voice really help the atmosphere here, and depict falling in love with someone in an incredibly relatable way. One thing Sofia did really well in this album is making her vocals flow with the rhythm, and that stands out in the chorus here. The chorus is so catchy, particularly the lyric “Oh my god, the sweet paradise of you by my side, oh baby, say you’ll be mine” flows so smoothly that it makes me as smitten with this song as Sofia is with her man lol. I also liked how the second verse began with Sofia explaining how her mother warned her about being too in love, and how she says “I like it but I shouldn’t.” This adds a sense of dissonance to the song, exploring how one can become so smitten that it devolves into a sickeningly sweet feeling of love. I know I can personally relate to this, and I thought Sofia captured the feeling very accurately here.

4. Hold Onto Me
Standout lyric: “But I promise there is a light at the end of this long ride” Album: Non-album single (2021)
Sofia really delivers with these catchy, earworm choruses! “Hold Onto Me” has a lover promising to be always there for their significant other through the ups and the downs, realizing they are human and don’t always have a firm grip on what they want life to be. Sofia exudes a lot of confidence in her voice, which really comes through in this song. The chill, laid-back production makes this such a bop and feels like it would be a great song to listen to at the beach (I have not tried this though lol). One of Sofia’s standout tracks for sure.

3. It's Only Love, Nobody Dies
Standout lyric: “Is it gonna hurt me, it won’t be tonight / Is it gonna hurt you, no, it won't be tonight / At least if it hurts, we’ll know what it’s like” Album: Sofia Carson (2022)
I love the sentiment behind this one! The song talks about fear of vulnerability and trying to convince yourself that a budding relationship doesn’t mean anything, when both people know that it possibly might. Sofia does a great job of expressing the façade of not caring in her lyrics, when she truly does care a lot. The contrast between lyrics such as “It’s only love, nobody dies” and “Drive with you, wanna kill the lonely” is quite artistically interesting. I like how she also explores what she believes the other person’s feelings to be, presuming that there is a part of themselves that they hide due to fear of vulnerability. I loved how Sofia explored both sides of vulnerability here, as often, people fear being vulnerable because they are afraid of what the other person might say. In reality, often the other person is just as afraid of being vulnerable as you are. I particularly want to highlight the post-chorus of this song used after the second and third choruses, as the flow of her voice sounds absolutely amazing here. This song is definitely a standout track in Sofia’s discography and I’m glad they’ve pushed it as a single.

2. I Luv U (featuring R3hab)
Standout lyric: “Even though we're always hanging out, I get the feeling that you're not around” Album: Non-album single (2019)
“I Luv U” was my first exposure to Sofia’s music, which I heard for the first time during the pandemic, and thus I have a lot of nostalgia around the song. I think R3hab and Sofia always have great chemistry together between her voice and his production. Lyrically, the song discusses knowing your partner is in love with someone else, and being confused about what to do because you are still in love with them and don’t want to leave. Sofia’s voice sounds excellent over the R3hab’s production, and the drop feels really natural here. This is one of Sofia’s most catchiest songs, and was definitely one I listened to a lot during quarantine.

1. Two Tears in a Bucket
Standout lyric: “When all I got was nothing, you'll be two tears in a bucket” Album: Sofia Carson (2022)
We’ve made it at last to the #1 song in these rankings, which is the final track on Sofia’s debut album. Lyrically, the song discusses trying to get over a former lover after a breakup, and realizing how happy you were before being romantically involved with the person, as a way to get over how sad you feel now. When I heard this for the first time, I was absolutely blown away. Sofia’s voice sounds absolutely amazing here, and the ominous production really compliments the lyrical subject matter here. I also like the slight production switch-up during the bridge. The vocal effects here are also incredible, particularly the echoing between the end of the first chorus and the second verse. I really like the echo-y vocal effects during the “woah-oh-oh” part in the final chorus, as it makes it feel sort of haunting and adds to the atmosphere of the song. This is an absolute must-listen and is the highlight of Sofia’s discography thus far.
That about does it for these reviews/rankings! I really enjoyed going through another artist's discography, and I can't wait to keep reviewing Sofia's music as it comes out. I hope anyone who read this enjoyed going through these reviews as much as I did writing them!

23. I Didn't Know
Standout lyric: "Together we are chaos and it’s perfect" Album: Purple Hearts Soundtrack (2022)
Given the release of the Purple Hearts soundtrack, I’m briefly resuming these reviews every day for the next six days to give my review of each track! I’m not going to review the stripped tracks since it’s the same lyrics, and I will include the two covers as bonuses (like “Full Throttle” and “Stuck on the Outside”). For the four songs that do count towards the rankings, since I can’t edit post order, I will simply list what position they rank at, which means every song ranked below it shifts one spot down (in example, since this is now #21, “Always” moves up to #22, “Como, Cuando y Donde” moves up to #23, etc.). I will include a running list of the rankings in the first post on this thread. Also, if you haven’t watched Purple Hearts, I highly recommend checking it out! Sofia’s acting is incredible, and Cassie is such an amazing character. Her sassy feminist personality is amazing lol. I don’t typically like films about the military, but honestly, this was one of my favorite films of the year. It was so well done, and the plot was incredibly engaging. Anyway, let’s get on to my review of this song!
Lyrically, this song talks about not realizing how madly in love you are with a person until it is too late and you have lost them. Sofia’s vocals make this an incredibly emotional song. Even separated from the context from the movie, it’s such a powerful ballad. You can really feel the pain in Sofia’s voice, and the depressed, lethargic production of the verses particularly accentuates it. The slight build in the production during the chorus really elevates Sofia’s voice and makes it especially emotional. The amount of emotion Sofia conveys in this song is impressive, and definitely makes this song a tearjerker.

17. Come Back Home
Standout lyric: “Letting my fears show till I can face 'em, letting my tears go till I can taste them” Album: Purple Hearts Soundtrack (2022)
Sofia’s airy vocals do such a great job of conveying her emotions here. I would honestly say I like this song a bit more for the slow-jam production than I do the lyrics, although the lyrics focusing on wanting her lover to come back home are definitely very emotional. I like that the lyrics have the broad appeal of fitting the film’s meaning of Cassie wanting her husband to come back home, and could also be interpreted in a general sense of wanting someone you love to return to you. While this was initially my least favorite of the songs from this album, I would say it's definitely a grower and is now my favorite original song from this soundtrack.
