I've been looking through some old Billboard charts, and rediscovered what an amazing year for alternative radio 1995 was. There were better charts than this one at other points during the year IMO, but this week's was still pretty impressive. You might find more worthwhile singles on any random 1995 weekly chart than have been released in all of 2005.
Just ignore that Joan Osborne song.

This chart looks great , I wish there were still bands like Alice In Chains on the alt chart , But I have to admit that I still think there are also some great bands on the current chart. Back then female acts could actually make it onto alt radio .
Amazing to see how many of these alt acts also charted on CHR.
My favorite out of this bunch is Santa Monica.

Memories of the Way Alternative radio used to be..
This was a time before the format known as Modern A/C took away many of the Natalie Merchants, Goo Goo Dolls, Alanis' etc...
In November of 1995, it seemed that there were ALOT more Alternative Rock Stations out there.. In Modesto, we had 95.1 KDJK which was an awesome station that played most of the songs on the Alternative Chart and mixed it with some 80's Retro.. I was listening to some old tapes of their A-Z Weekend that they did Thanksgiving Weekend of 1995.. Great memories!

You might find more worthwhile singles on any random 1995 weekly chart than have been released in all of 2005. That's a little over-the-top, isn't it? Of course trying to make a comparison between today's bands and the bands that technically spawned all of them is kind of a lopsided battle. Hm. Actually, that almost sounds like a movie idea...... On the side of all that is old and proud: Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice In Chains, Metallica, Anthrax, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Bush, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, Korn, Nine Inch Nails, 311, Tool, Collective Soul, Rancid, Pennywise, the Offspring, Blur, and Radiohead! On the side of all that is new and naive: Staind, the White Stripes, System Of A Down, Slipknot, Linkin Park, Coldplay, Disturbed, Seether, Shinedown, My Chemical Romance, Gorillaz, Story Of The Year, Fall Out Boy, Coheed And Cambria, 30 Seconds To Mars, Taproot, Yellowcard, Crossfade, and Trapt! Weezer can play the role of the band caught in the middle that plays both sides of the fence. Our Lady Peace can play the Canadian band that sits smugly off to the side and makes fun of the others. Guns 'N' Roses can be the band that sits around through the whole film and does nothing. Limp Bizkit can be the band that acts like they're winning the war when they're not even participating. Then Korn comes in and shoots them. Eventually, Staind, Linkin Park, System, Slipknot, and Disturbed let their powers combine and kill Korn with a giant angry teenage robot. The White Stripes hatch a plan! They will confuse the other side by making them guess if they're really married or siblings, and while the elders are caught off-guard, Coheed comes in and attacks a supersonic assault of pure rockin. A Tenacious D cameo comes in at this point. But then Nirvana kills itself and becomes one with the force, gaining strength beyond imagination. Nirvana kills Shinedown and Seether with sheer legacy before imploding into Puddle Of Mudd, Creed, Nickelback, Fuel, and 3 Doors Down. Then all the bands get wiped out by Alice In Chains...but wait! It's not really Alice In Chains, it's Godsmack disguised as Alice In Chains! The real AIC comes in and kills all of them. 311 tries to make peace with everyone and eventually dies in an out-of-control Coldplay attack when someone accidentally takes Chris Martin's picture. Then Coldplay gets attacked by Radiohead, but the two somehow combine their power to form....Muse! Oasis shows up to try to steal powers from all the bands in a vain effort to become the biggest band in the world, but Muse unleashes their cosmic might upon them and fries the band where they stand. Meanwhile, the screamo bands just kind of sit there and write poetry about the experience. Then Green Day, Rancid, Pennywise, and the Offspring build a giant robot version of Joe Strummer to kill all of them. Eventually the Numetalloid and Mechastrummer have a huge brawl in the middle of New York City and destroy everything. All hope seems lost until Blur opens Pandora's Box...... And out come Franz Ferdinand, the Killers, the Bravery, the Kaiser Chiefs, and Kasabian! They use their indie dance-rock might to cause the Numetalloid to suffer a severe meltdown! Nu-metal dies. The movie ends with Mechastrummer flying into space to bring aid to the music industries of alien worlds. I could go on and on like this. Now imagine what I'd come up with if I were actually on something....

WPBZ sometimes has these "Lost Buzzcut Weekends" where they play all songs from the late 80s and 90s. I heard this is when the station gets its most listeners because people call up and thank them for playing songs they haven't heard in years. Since they started this awhile back, listeners suggested playing one or two of these songs each hour into regular rotation, and the ratings have gone up since then.

Maybe, but when you're as fed up with bland post-grunge and nu-metal acts as I am (are we at post-nu-metal yet?), you tend to make sweeping generalizations like that. Someone else posted their favorites from this list. Out of the ones you never hear anymore, mine are: Blues Traveler - Hook Radiohead - Just Folk Implosion - Natural One The Rentals - Friends Of P. Garbage - Queer That harmonica solo in Hook is just sick.

I never knew Joan Osborne made Alternative!
I do think Alternative still plays good music today, but I do agree that back in the 90's Alternative had a much better mix of music. I loved seeing Goo Goo Dolls and Alanis Morissette on the chart, but maybe that's just because I am biased towards Hot AC music.

Check out this top 10 from February:
1 1 WHEN I COME AROUND *GREEN DAY
2 2 BETTER MAN PEARL JAM
(3) 4 LOVE SPREADS *THE STONE ROSES
4 3 LIVE FOREVER *OASIS
(5) 6 SOUR TIMES *PORTISHEAD
(6) 5 EVERYTHING ZEN *BUSH
7 7 GOTTA GET AWAY *OFFSPRING
8 8 BUDDY HOLLY *WEEZER
(9) 13 LIGHTNING CRASHES *LIVE
(10) 17 STRONG ENOUGH *SHERYL CROW
I especially like the mini British invasion at #3-6.
Other songs on this chart include 2 live Nirvana cuts, a Simple Minds song that I don't ever remember hearing on radio, and songs from Veruca Salt, Liz Phair, Cranberries, Belly, Sarah McLachlan, Letters To Cleo, & Hole...not to mention a Mazzy Star song not called 'Fade Into You'. Everyone remembers that female artists used to play a bigger role on alternative radio, but still, to see them covering about a third of the chart at one time is mind-boggling.

There are some songs on the current chart that I like better than any of the 1995 ones, but the sheer depth and variety give a huge edge to 10 years ago.

Yeah, I remember seeing some of these charts and was amazed at all they had on it.
Yeah, the Joan Osbourne song is very annoying.
This was also the same year that White Zombie, KMFDM, etc. could have hits with what they were making. One thing I really like.
311 had a moderate hit way before "Down" with "Don't Stay Home" (although "Do You Right" from Music was a minor hit.. and "All Mixed Up" had a brief showing before the release of "Down").
Punks who weren't even on a major label could still make the chart. "Time Bomb" was released on an Epitaph album, yet still managed to chart (as well as "Roots Radical" and "Salvation"). The Offspring had done this a previous year.... However, indie-label acts were midly successful in 2005. Interpol and Hawthorne Heights did decently.
But then again, Sponge and silverchair (and arguably CS and 7M3) don't seem a whole lot different than modern post-grunge if you ask me.

First, ANTHRAX was more an AOR/Active Rock band, and never really an alternative band..
METALLICA Wasn't embraced by Alternative Radio until they played Lollapallooza in 1996.. KORN wasn't embraced until 1996 or so either...
Guns N' Roses were also an AOR/Active Rock band..
Good post though nonetheless..

This forum discusses active rock and mainstream rock, along with alternative. Correcting it was my first instinct, too, but bands like Motley Crue, Guns 'N' Roses, etc. etc. could be included in this forum as well.

Yeah, plus Korn did scrape the Alternative chart in 1995 with BOTH "Shoots and Ladders" and "Blind". They didn't *really* have hits on ANY format really until "Got the Life".
I found that GNR thing rather funny.

Ah, let the nostalgia continue.
I don't know if this is the proper forum to post this in. However, looking at that chart this week in 1995, I consider that to be a monumental one. SyrupBoy was correct, that is one legendary chart; so many of those in the bottom 20 went on to become classic top 5 hits. So many excellent hooks, I almost don't know where to begin.
1995 was long before I started listening to alternative music. I remember listening to the AAA-leaning alt. station here in K.C. at the time, and remember hearing bands like Spin Doctors, Sheryl Crow, Pearl Jam, and Alanis Morissette. Then, for about four years altogether, I stopped listening. About five years later, in 2000, I started listening again as the nu-metal/post-grunge wave kicked in. Creed, Staind, Green Day, Linkin Park, the Chili Peppers, and Third Eye Blind were some of my favorite bands.
I have since reached out to many more alternative bands, including more obscure ones like Secret Machines, Stereophonics, and Billy Talent and more experimental bands like Muse.
I didn't even start following the charts until late 2000.
1995 was obviously long before my time (I would have been 9 at the time), but here is what I would rank these songs:
1 4 MY FRIENDS - RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS A 2 2 BULLET WITH BUTTERFLY WINGS - SMASHING PUMPKINS A- 3 1 NAME - GOO GOO DOLLS B 4 3 GEEK STINK BREATH - GREEN DAY A- 5 6 POSSUM KINGDOM - TOADIES A 6 5 LUMP - PRESIDENTS OF THE USA B 7 7 HAND IN MY POCKET - ALANIS MORISSETTE B+ 8 10 FRIENDS OF P. - THE RENTALS N/A 9 8 I'LL STICK AROUND - FOO FIGHTERS A- 10 12 NATURAL ONE - FOLK IMPLOSION N/A 11 9 COMEDOWN - BUSH A- 12 13 QUEER - GARBAGE N/A 13 16 HOOK - BLUES TRAVELER A- 14 15 ONE OF US - JOAN OSBORNE B 15 31 GLYCERINE - BUSH A- 16 11 A GIRL LIKE YOU - EDWYN COLLINS N/A 17 27 ALL I REALLY WANT - ALANIS MORISSETTE B- 18 19 GRIND - ALICE IN CHAINS A 19 21 CUMBERSOME - SEVEN MARY THREE A 20 18 TOMORROW - SILVERCHAIR B+ 21 17 WALK THIS WORLD - HEATHER NOVA N/A 22 20 GOOD INTENTIONS - TOAD THE WET SPROCKET N/A 23 22 WONDER - NATALIE MERCHANT C+ 24 26 PURE MASSACRE - SILVERCHAIR N/A 25 14 TIME BOMB - RANCID A- 26 32 SANTA MONICA (WATCH THE WORLD DIE) - EVERCLEAR A 27 NEW THE WORLD I KNOW - COLLECTIVE SOUL B 28 23 DO YOU SLEEP? - LISA LOEB & NINE STORIES B 29 24 UNINVITED - RUTH RUTH N/A 30 25 IN THE BLOOD - BETTER THAN EZRA B 31 29 DON'T STAY HOME - 311 A 32 33 YOUR LITTLLE SECRET - MELISSA ETHERIDGE B 33 NEW JUST A GIRL - NO DOUBT C+ 34 36 BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S - DEEP BLUE SOMETHING C+ 35 34 RAININ' - SPONGE N/A 36 40 PIRANHA - TRIPPING DAISY N/A 37 39 ROSEALIA - BETTER THAN EZRA A- 38 37 JUST - RADIOHEAD A 39 35 CARNIVAL - NATALIE MERCHANT B- 40 38 SAY IT AIN'T SO - WEEZER B+

Ah, let the nostalgia continue. I don't know if this is the proper forum to post this in. I considered the 'Nostalgia' folder, but then I remembered that it's become the unofficial Mariah Carey / Madonna droolfest. I'd rather post a topic in a place where it won't get buried within an hour.
