Guess this solves the mystery giant country aircheck ad from Mercury.

Guess this solves the mystery giant country aircheck ad from Mercury. Sure does! Those sly Universal folks thought they could keep us waiting probably until the next BCU/Country Aircheck, but they've been foiled! Anyway, I've gotta say...I love this song. Excellent creativity in the lyrics, a shot of uniqueness that mainstream country radio could use. Please oh please let this song bring Jamey back into the top 20!

Damn, should've figured that one out! Hopefully Radio does play this one because it would help T.G.S. get to Platinum, I think. Although it will definitely need a radio edit!

While I may not have thought it first, I did write it first in the aircheck thread The pink is what threw me off of it being Jamey though, too bad no new Shania, one day...

Hmm..this'll be an interesting release. It's a good song, but the only two songs that would really hit home on radio would be "The Guitar Song" w/ Bill Anderson and "Front Porch Swing Afternoon". I hope they at least release one of them...ppl will love them once they hear em a few times on radio!!

How is a song this well-written going to be a radio hit? Still, it does happen every couple of years. Pancho And Lefty was a #1. Whiskey Lullaby with its perfect first line was a #3. I'll take even a top 20 chart run for this one as a massive Christmas present too!
I do think the idea that heartache originated when a caveman found his cavewoman "lovin' on the missing link living next door" is just way too good to describe in words. Wonderful song.

Great song. I originally wasn't a JJ fan. But I've been listening to some of his music as of late, and he's such a true traditional artist. Country music needs more people like him.

I also really like this, along with everything else on the album. But I really don't see this charting any better than "Playing the Part".
I agree with everybody here that this is great. The lyrics are just too good, but maybe "too good" for Country radio.

^Thanks rowdawg. I'll edit it into the first post. I wonder if they will eventually send out a shorter version with some of the outro cut off? Lots of instrumentation at the end.

Don't radio stations do that a lot anyways on their own? I sometimes find even shorter outros cut off by radio DJs coming on before it actually ends completely. And sometimes they introduce songs and talk over the opening instrumentals as well, even to where its sometimes looped so that it doesn't interfere w/ the song's vocals.

^True--I know my station did that with Easton's "I Can't Love You Back", but I think if labels deliver the most radio-ready version of a song to radio stations, then those stations will be more likely to play it. Stations will probably play a 3 minute version of a song that's handed to them quicker than a 4 minute version...

^ My station did the same with "Playing The Part", that had about a minute of outro instrumentation.
Jamey Johnson has to be the most clever songwriter out there. "But I traded that for Cocaine and a Whore", "It's so hard to stay honest in a world that's headed to hell", and pretty much all of the lyrics in this song. I just don't see radio liking this.--too deep.

I can see this doing something at radio...I don't know how to explain it, maybe just a gut-feeling. But I just feel like it's interesting enough that it'll attract enough attention--it won't be a big hit or anything, but I can see it doing better than "Playing The Part", tho maybe I'll be wrong. I'm not expecting it to climb fast or anything, but be a grower, if given the chance...

I hope you're right. I'd settle for top 20 and a nice long run. In fact, I'd settle for it getting played on my local stations at all.
I don't think this song's problem is its depth. I think it's funny in an unusual way, and many people won't get the humor. I was surprised when Brad Paisley's Me Neither didn't make the top 10, but that song also took a sideways approach to a topic and I think a lot of people never warmed to it because of that. Funny songs like Ticks and especially I'm Gonna Miss Her did much better for Brad, because the humor was broader and less concealed.
I'm sure there are examples of really dry wit doing well on the charts, but usually funny songs aren't as dark as this one so their humor is right out in the open.
I'd write more about this, but my wife seems to have ventured out and is flirting (again) with the missing link living next door, so I've gotta run.

I personally don't think this is radio friendly at all. I mean, I know Jamey per se is someone who isn't radio friendly, but this is even less radio friendly. It may grow on me, but I think it's his worst single to date. And I looooove the album, I think it's a masterpiece, but I just don't see this being played on radio.

I think this song is much more raido friendly then "playing the part" or "high cost of living". The song is about heartache and thats a subject that everyone can relate to unlike smoking pot.

Has not charted yet. Maybe jhomes87, Jonsolo, or Zazie can tell you if it will show up on this week's chart.

^ And that looks like its peak :( Radio continues to dislike Johnsons music , at least we know that Johnson doesn't care much about how good his singles do. Will he release another from "The Guitar Song" or not?

Jamey's music is too good for radio. He doesn't make it radio-friendly (with that said, radio-friendly songs can be good too). And, he doesn't need to. He sells albums better than anyone else with that amount of airplay.
Still, I could see Mercury push another single or two out there. Why not? They know he's going to be a steady seller even if the single doesn't take off. I imagine they won't give it a lot of promotion, since Jamey's radio track record isn't very good, but with the album up for nominations at the ACM's, it will still certainly be in the public eye for much of the spring. I'd like to see at least one song just kinda hit a groove on radio, or find its niche, since it is a great album.

It's just a shame his album sells good and he is nominated for lots of awards. But radio won't even play his songs where they can even reach the top 40.
