I think Grenade is poised to make a big move at the beginning of the year. I'd say it'll hit #1 on the Hot 100 in a couple of weeks.

Grenade may take the top spot this week if its Christmas weeks sales surge is large enough.
Then after, it just depends on how long Firework's airplay hangs on. If it remains steady it will more than likely go back to #1 after the new year.

I think Grenade is poised to make a big move at the beginning of the year. I'd say it'll hit #1 on the Hot 100 in a couple of weeks. I think it has a somewhat okay chance of hitting #1 this week. The airplay difference is 40 (and staying steady), and last week the digital difference was 30 (and growing).

^Yeah, but once more stations start dropping JTWYA, Grenade could explode even more. It could eventually start getting increases similar to Firework in a few weeks.

What I was saying was that while Grenade will certainly hit number one "eventually," its chances of getting there this week are higher than it would seem.

I doubt Bruno will be #1 this week. He needs to sell nearly 40,000 downloads more than Katy and their pop bars are still really close together.

A reminder of last year's digital sales this week:
1 1 KE$HA TIK TOK 610069 175 221493 2048354 4 2 IYAZ REPLAY 446816 245 129464 2049093 2 3 LADY GAGA BAD ROMANCE 444911 162 169886 1793466 5 4 OWL CITY FIREFLIES 440038 285 114365 2488008 3 5 JAY-Z + ALICIA KEYS EMPIRE STATE OF MIND 361776 145 147699 2307007 6 6 SEAN*JAY FEAT. LIL WAYNE DOWN 337225 254 95383 2856546 9 7 DERULO*JASON WHATCHA SAY 321230 269 87123 2532743 14 8 CYRUS*MILEY PARTY IN THE U.S.A. 284516 362 61637 2981801 13 9 SEAN*JAY FEAT. SEAN PAUL & LIL DO YOU REMEMBER 253355 295 64074 604957 7 10 BLACK EYED PEAS MEET ME HALFWAY 242376 173 88717 1460634
Every song in the top ten gained at least 145%.
If Grenade and Firework each gained 145%, they would sell:
519,400 - Grenade 470,400 - Firework
A gap of 49,000, more than enough.
But, there's no guarantee gains will be that big. If they "only" gained 100% each, they'd sell:
424,000 - Grenade 384,000 - Firework
Which would be almost exactly the airplay difference.
When you consider that Grenade was gaining sales this week will Firework was losing sales, it also stands to reason that Grenade may have a bigger gain this week than Firework.
I think a lot of factors point to Grenade hitting #1.
But this is the biggest wildcard week of the year so there is plenty of room for all sorts of possibilities (including some other song climbing huge in sales over both of them unexpectedly). I'd give Grenade 60% odds to Firework's 40%.

Is that Train holiday Coca-Cola theme getting any airplay? It debuted on the 1/1 Bubbling Under chart, and currently No. 71 on iTunes.

With Christmas being on a Saturday this year, wouldn't the digital surge more than likely be smaller than it was last year?

AIWFCIY performed as well as ever, but OS just limped this holiday season. Ah, well- when you have one holiday classic, can't expect too much for a newbie, especially if the act is 40+ when it's released. OS' audience would have been higher, too, if it garnered more play at its primary format, AC- but, the bulk of AC play goes to the older holiday tracks (they get played loads and loads of times at their peak).

I think AIWFCIY did a little better this year than the last one. I think Oh Santa also did decently, but I never had big expectations for that one considering most stations might prefer the classic instead of a new song.

"Limping" in overall radio play; surely you knew that's what I meant. :) But even at AC, its airplay wasn't as high as the play for the most-played recurrent holiday tracks. It did as well as a new holiday track at AC could have done, though.
True, Choco- though I thought OS could, at the least, flirt with charting on Hot 100 Airplay (which would require 15m-20m, depending on the week).

But even at AC, its airplay wasn't as high as the play for the most-played recurrent holiday tracks. It did as well as a new holiday track at AC could have done, though. So it's not because radio didn't want to play it, it's because of recurrents. It has been #1 at the format for a whole month. There's also nothing that suggests 'Oh Santa!' won't get any recurrent airplay next year, so we cannot judge its entire performance yet. The song served its purpose this year, exposing the album to the audience that buys Christmas music. It was successful for what it did.

^I don't disagree that it served a purpose for the album. AC gives recurrent holiday tracks the highest airplay in weeks leading up to Christmas, but not other formats. Formats like pop don't spin holiday tracks at their highest levels until Christmas week, usually- but formats like pop probably didn't go gung-ho for OS for reasons discussed (Mimi's recent performance at the format, being 40+, etc.) A format like AC doesn't adhere to the ageism that other formats do.
As for recurrent play, OS probably can get close to where it's peaked this year in future years, possibly a little higher. But I doubt we'll see it get 20m+ at its peak.
