Near record-low for SoundScan-era weekly album sales...
Billboard.com:
The Digital Songs and Billboard 200 charts couldn't look anymore different this week.
Sales at the top of the Billboard 200 continue to slide, as the No. 1-debuting set -- from a rather unlikely band -- sold 44,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Meanwhile, Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me" makes a sizzling debut atop the Digital Songs chart with 411,000 sold.
Cake's "Showroom of Compassion" bows atop the Billboard 200 with just 44,000. That's not only the smallest frame for a No. 1 album since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991 ( beating a record set only last week), but it's also obviously the tiniest figure racked up by a No. 1-debuting album.
Who would have thought that Cake -- a band that many may only remember for its 1998 No. 1 Alternative Songs hit, "Never There" -- would notch not just its first top 10 album in 2011, but also its first No. 1?
Cage the Elephant's new "Thank You Happy Birthday" debuts in the No. 2 slot with 39,000, while last week's No. 1, Taylor Swift's "Speak Now," drops to No. 3 (35,000; down 32%). Country act Steel Magnolia is the third and final bow in the top 10, as its self-titled set starts at No. 7 (28,000).
As for the rest of the top 10, Bruno Mars' "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" falls 3-4 (32,000; down 15%), Nicki Minaj's "Pink Friday" slips 2-5 (32,000; down 17%), and the "Country Strong" soundtrack rises 10-6 (29,000; up less than 1%). Rihanna's "Loud" slides 6-8 (28,000; down 16%), Mumford & Sons' "Sigh No More" dips 8-9 (26,000; down 24%), and Kanye West's "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" drops 7-10 (25,000; down 24%).
Over on the Digital Songs chart, things brighten up. The arrival of "Hold It Against Me" with an as-expected 411,000 downloads sold in its first week is not just Spears' best sales week for a digital song, but also the largest debut for a woman as a lead artist. It trumps the 325,000 that Swift's "Today Was a Fairytale" sold on the Feb. 6, 2010, chart.
This week, Spears leads two more top 10 bows: Avril Lavigne's "What the Hell" (No. 6 with 163,000) and West and Jay-Z's "H*A*M" (No. 10 with 125,000). The latter reached digital retailers one day later (Jan. 12) than the other two titles.
Last week's Digital Songs No. 1, Mars' "Grenade," falls to No. 2 (219,000; down 21%). Wiz Khalifa's "Black and Yellow" moves 4-3 (190,000; up 3%), Katy Perry's "Firework" slips 2-4 (184,000; down 20%), and Enrique Iglesias' "Tonight (I'm Lovin' You)" slides 3-5 (182,000; down 5%). The Black Eyed Peas' "The Time (Dirty Bit)" falls 5-7 (157,000; down 13%), Lil Wayne's "6 Foot 7 Foot" declines 7-8 (146,000; down 10%), and Ke$ha's "We R Who We R" tumbles 6-9 (141,000; down 19%).
Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Jan. 16) totaled 4.9 million units, down 11% compared with the sum last week (5.4 million) and down 15% compared with the comparable sales week of 2010 (5.7 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 10.3 million, an 11% drop compared with the same total at this point last year (11.6 million).
Digital track sales this past week totaled 27.5 million downloads, down 8% compared with last week (29.8 million) and 8% stacked next to the comparable week of 2010 (25.4 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 57.2 million, up 8% compared with the same total at this point last year (52.9 million).
Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2010 when: The live charity compilation "Hope for Haiti Now" debuted at No. 1 with 171,000, marking the first digital-only album to reach the top of the chart. The previous week's No. 1, Vampire Weekend's "Contra," fell to No. 6 with 43,000 (down 65%).

I think this #1 album will be the first #1 album that will not reach 200,000 copies sold.
:(
But I do believe that this year will see a less than 10% drop from last year. (there are some pretty big names releasing this year: Britney, Gaga, Beyonce, Coldplay, etc.)
And digital sales will see a 5-10% increase from last year.

Thanks ^
Honestly I see this being the label's fault.
There was no reason to rush release album that got lost in the Christmas shuffle like The Beginning and the Kesha EP. Both album would have gone #1 and gotten more attention as a result.

But I do believe that this year will see a less than 10% drop from last year. (there are some pretty big names releasing this year: Britney, Gaga, Beyonce, Coldplay, etc.) And digital sales will see a 5-10% increase from last year. I think both those figures are too optimistic. I think we will see closer to a 15% drop in album sales this year, and I bet digital singles gains will be under 5%.

left out:
Carrie Underwood, Some Hearts (2,000, -13%, 7.077 million) Carrie Underwood, Carnival Ride (1,000, -19%, 3.17 million) these usually come a little later in the day..
Fantasia will pass 400k soonish <3 they really should release a 3rd and final single.
Carrie should release a 5th single to get her over 2 million faster.
maybe idols wont have such hard falls next week since the show is starting back up.

It's looking highly likely that a week from today, we'll be witnessing "Showroom of Compassion" breaking the previous dubious record for sharpest plunge position-wise from #1 on the Billboard 200, currently set by "Light Grenades" by Incubus (it plunged 1-37 in its second week on the chart in 2006)
Could Cake's latest fall off the top 50 altogether in its sophomore week?

If it were before the brief Grammy rush, it would have been a clear "yes," but that's not the case.

Billboard.biz:
Chart Moves: Britney Spears, Cage the Elephant, Kanye West, Avril Lavigne, Trent Reznor's "The Social Network" Score
January 20, 2011
By Keith Caulfield and Gary Trust
The Billboard 200:
-- Cage the Elephant: As the alternative band's second album, "Thank You Happy Birthday," starts with 39,000 at No. 2 according to Nielsen SoundScan, their first self-titled set motors 171-59 with Pacesetter honors (up 113%) and also rises to No. 1 on Top Pop Catalog.
-- "Country Strong:" When it's January and early February, and the chart is especially volatile, many albums can and do earn great gains. Case in point: the "Country Strong" soundtrack rises 10-6 (29,000; up 1%) and its "More Music From..." companion set flies 48-23 (15,000; up 64%).
-- Cee-Lo Green: The artist's guest turn on the Jan. 15 edition of NBC's "Saturday Night Live" helps lift "The Lady Killer" album by 3% (moving it 46-43). That may not sound like much of an increase, but it's one of only five non-debuting albums in the top 50 to post a gain.
-- Train: ABC's "The Bachelor" welcomed the band on Jan. 10, where they performed two songs. No surprise then to see their "Save Me, San Francisco" set chug up the list 12 spots to No. 44 with a 10% increase.
-- Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross: The duo's Golden Globe-winning score to "The Social Network" (Jan. 16) scoots with a 164% increase with a re-entry at No. 72. It also rallies up the Top Soundtracks chart 17-7.
-- Newsboys: The band's "Born Again" storms back onto the list at No. 81 (up 110%) following venue sales reported during the multi-act Winter Jam tour. Also spiking thanks to Winter Jam: David Crowder Band's "Church Music" at No. 166 (up 142%).

I have no doubt "My Kinda Party" will eventually become Aldean's first career multi-platinum record, especially with the immense crossover potential "Don't You Wanna Stay" possesses and Aldean's ability to sell out arenas. This is so lame the top 30 is so low ever since the holidays ended, and on top of it the sales are only leaking once every couple of months so we can't even see how the rest are doing.....brutal

Aldean is the next Chesney imo. I really like him, glad he's finally getting the success he deserves! He's No way the Next Kenny, Kenny Didn't hit it big until after his first GH Album, Jason Hit it Big the first time he was out of the Gate, Kenny's Career as of lately isn't big in the Album World these days His Really Big Album was The Road & The Radio, Sure he Sales Out Concert's & Has Great Radio Air Play, But Unlike Kenny Jason Still Has hair, So Jason is not the Next kenny in any Way, But i still think they are both Great.

actually his really big album was No Shoes No shirt, and When the sun goes down wasn't it What I meant was That his last Triple Plantium Album was The Road & The Radio which Sold 3 X's Plantum after that only Gold or Plantium, I blame it on People who Would Rather Download & Not Buy the Album, I hate those People.
