www.billboard.com/news#/news/george-strait-lands-top-debut-on-billboard-1005351152.storyGeorge Strait Lands Top Debut on Billboard 200, Beatles' 1' Re-enters by Keith Caulfield, L.A. | September 14, 2011 Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter IV" easily holds at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart for a second week, as it sells another 219,000 (down 77%) according to Nielsen SoundScan. It arrived atop the list with 964,000 last week -- 2011's second-largest sales frame. Its sizable second-week decline was expected, as Billboard forecasted the set would drop by anywhere between 65%-80%. The last three albums to post bigger debuts -- all over a million -- also saw large sophomore-frame drops. Earlier this year Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" fell 84% from a 1.11 million start. Previous to that, Taylor Swift's "Speak Now" and Wayne's "Tha Carter III" both declined by 69% after debuting with 1.05 and 1.01 million, respectively. Meanwhile, Adele's "21" moves up on spot to No. 2 with 121,000 (down 21%) while last week's runner-up, Red Hot Chili Peppers' "I'm With You," falls to No. 5 with 58,000 (down 75%). The Billboard 200's top debut is George Strait's "Here For a Good Time," starting at No. 3 with 91,000. It's the country icon's follow-up to 2009's No. 1-debuting "Twang," which launched with 155,000. "Here" is Strait's 17th top 10 on the Billboard 200 and 24th No. 1 on the Country Albums chart. However, it is also his first studio album to bow with less than 100,000 since way back in 1994, when "Lead On" started with 56,000 at No. 26. The Beatles' "1" re-enters at No. 4 with 60,000 (up 5,786%) after the greatest hits package made its digital debut in the iTunes Store last week. Promotion from the retailer, its sale price of $9.99 and a successful Twitter campaign enables the album's lofty return. The set, first released in 2000, sold just 1,000 copies the previous week. On Twitter, the promoted hash tag #MyBeatles1 asked fans: What is your favorite "1" track? The question prompted responses from regular folks and celebrities, too. Among the stars tweeting their favorites: Justin Bieber ("She Loves You"), Ke$ha ("I Want To Hold Your Hand"), Foo Fighters ("Hey Jude") and Coldplay ("Something"). The Beatles' "1" spent eight weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in late 2000 and early 2001 and has sold 11.8 million copies in the U.S. It's the sixth-biggest selling album of the past 20 years. The 27-track set contains every No. 1 hit by the band on the Billboard Hot 100 and the U.K.'s Official Singles Chart. Jay-Z and Kanye West's "Watch the Throne" falls 4-6 (49,000; down 38%), the "Now 39" compilation climbs 10-8 (27,000; down 25%) and Beyonce's "4" slips 7-9 (25,000; down 35%). Maroon 5's "Hands All Over" returns to the top 10 for the first time since its second week on the chart last October, as it vaults 23-7 with 29,000 (up 97%). The set's gain was sparked by a four-day $6.99 sale price in the iTunes Store. This is the album's best sales frame since its second chart week when it moved 41,000 and its highest rank since it debuted at No. 2 on Oct. 9, 2010. Also coming back to the top 10 is Foster the People's "Torches," climbing 12-10 with a little under 25,000 (down 14%). The album previously spent one week in the top 10 -- its debut frame -- at No. 8 on June 11. Over on the Digital Songs chart, the tally returns to normal after last week's list got shook up by the "MTV Video Music Awards." "Moves Like Jagger" by Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera regains the No. 1 position (up two slots with 220,000; up 6%) while last week's topper, Adele's "Someone Like You," drops to No. 2 with 213,000 (down 22%). The Digital Songs chart's top debut is Kelly Clarkson's "Mr. Know It All," which arrives at No. 9 with 107,000. Its the first single from her fifth studio album, "Stronger," due out Oct. 24. Her last top 10 on the Digital Songs tally came with "My Life Would Suck Without You," which premiered at No. 1 with 280,000 in 2009. Lil Wayne's "How to Love" rebounds, zipping 20-10 with 90,000 (up 33%), Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks" falls 2-3 (193,000; down 11%) and LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem" jumps 8-4 (155,000; up 10%). Gym Class Heroes' "Stereo Hearts" (featuring Adam Levine) rises 9-5 (145,000; up 4%), Lady Gaga's "You and I" slips 4-6 (141,000; down 19%), Cobra Starship's "You Make Me Feel" (featuring Sabi) descends 5-7 (127,000; down 20%) and Rihanna's "Cheers (Drink to That)" moves 7-8 (126,000; down 11%). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Sept. 11) totaled 5.49 million units, down 17% compared to the sum last week (6.65 million) and up 14% compared to the comparable sales week of 2010 (4.83 million). Year to date album sales stand at 212.06 million, up 3% compared to the same total at this point last year (205.38 million). It is the 16th week in a row where year-to-date album volume is greater than the same time in the prior year. Digital track sales this past week totaled 21.26 million downloads, down 5% compared to last week (22.43 million) and up 6% stacked next to the comparable week of 2010 (20.03 million). Year to date track sales are at 889.59 million, up 11% compared to the same total at this point last year (801.84 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2010 when: Linkin Park's "A Thousand Suns" started at No. 1 with 241,000, just barely beating out Trey Songz's No. 2 debut with "Passion, Pain & Pleasure" (240,000).

Week Ending Sept. 11, 2011. Albums: The Beatles Are Back Posted 45 minutes ago by Paul Grein in Chart Watch new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart_watch/74411/week-ending-sept-11-2011-albums-the-beatles-are-back/The Beatles are back in the top five on The Billboard 200, thanks to the belated digital release of their hit-studded compilation 1. The album re-enters the chart at #4, its highest ranking since February 2001. The album, which was released on CD in November 2000, sold 59,000 digital copies this week (more than any other album) and 1,000 physical copies. The Beatles first cracked the top five in February 1964 with Meet The Beatles!, which gives the band a more than 47 year span of top five albums. Only three acts have had longer spans of top five albums. These are a pair of legends (Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand) and an amazingly durable novelty act (the Chipmunks). Yes, I just told you that the Chipmunks have had a longer span of top five albums than the Beatles. The Chipmunks first made the top five in January 1960 with Let's All Sing With The Chipmunks. They made it most recently in April 2008 with the Alvin And The Chipmunks movie soundtrack. It's a crazy, mixed-up world when the Chipmunks rank ahead of the Beatles on any list, but there you go. 1 is the first catalog album to make the top five on The Billboard 200 since the Rolling Stones' 1972 classic Exile On Main St, which hit #2 in May 2010. On the Top Catalog Albums chart, 1 returns to #1, dethroning Adele's 19. This is the 10th week on top for 1, which was the top catalog seller for a total of nine weeks in 2003 and 2004. 1 has sold 11,821,000 copies, which makes it the sixth best-selling album in Nielsen SoundScan history. (By next week, it will be in fifth place. Right now, it's just 6K copies behind Whitney Houston's The Bodyguard soundtrack.) The sales tally for 1 includes 210K cassettes (remember them?). (If you don't have this album, in one form or another, you should stop reading right now and get it. Chart Watch can wait.) Shameless Plug: Twenty-seven greatest hits albums are listed on Nielsen SoundScan's running list of the 200 best-selling albums in its history. I just posted a Chart Watch Extra in which I count ‘em down, from #1 (the Beatles) to #27 (Eric Clapton). Check it out. Lil Wayne's Tha Carter IV holds at #1 for the second straight week. It's Lil Wayne's first album to achieve that simple feat. Tha Carter III was bumped from the top spot in its second week by Coldplay's debuting Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends. (It later returned to the top spot for two additional weeks.) I Am Not A Human Being spent a single frame in the top spot. Tha Carter IV sold 219,000 copies in its second week, bringing its two-week total to 1,184,000. Only two albums have sold more copies so far this year. Adele's 21 is up to 3,419,000. Lady Gaga's Born This Way is up to 1,775,000. Lil Wayne has sold 12,884,000 albums, which puts him at #140 on Nielsen SoundScan's running list of the 200 best-selling album artists in its history. Other artists in this neighorhood on that chart: P!nk, Michael Buble, Counting Crows and Carrie Underwood. George Strait's Here For A Good Time enters The Billboard 200 at #3. It's Strait's 17th top 10 album, which lengthens his lead as the country artist with the most top 10 albums in chart history. Garth Brooks is in second place, with 14. Tim McGraw is in third, with 13. Strait first cracked the top 10 in November 1992 with the soundtrack to Pure Country, in which he starred. Here For A Good Time also debuts at #1 on Top Country Albums. It's Strait's 24th #1 on that chart, which is an all-time record. You may have read that the title track is Strait's 84th top 10 hit on Hot Country Songs, a total topped by only one artist. Eddy Arnold amassed 92 top 10 hits from 1945 to 1980. Strait notched his first top 10 country hit, "Unwound," in July 1981, just 10 months after Arnold notched his last, "That's What I Get For Loving You." I think that's what you call "the passing of the torch." Arnold was 62 when he scored his final top 10 hit. Strait is 59 now. Maroon 5's Hands All Over rebounds from #23 to #7 in its 20th week, due to the insertion of the #1 hit, "Moves Like Jagger" (featuring Christina Aguilera). The lead single from the set, "Misery," peaked at an OK #14, but two follow-ups didn't even make the top 40. The album debuted at #2 in September, but fell off the chart briefly in April before turning around on the strength of this nifty single. "Moves Like Jagger" is #1 on Hot Digital Songs for the third time in the past five weeks. Will it also return to #1 on the Hot 100? You'll find out later today when we post Chart Watch: Songs. You'll also see how high Kelly Clarkson debuts with her new one, "Mr. Know It All." (I think "Mr. Know It All" and "Miss Independent" may have issues.) Fun With Numbers: Four of this year's five recipients of Kennedy Center Honors have had, or have at least appeared on, chart-topping albums. Neil Diamond finally topped The Billboard 200 in 2008 with Home Before Dark. Meryl Streep was featured on 10 tracks on the Mamma Mia! soundtrack, which also hit #1 in 2008. Barbara Cook was featured on six tracks on The Music Man original cast album, which was #1 for 12 weeks in 1958. Sonny Rollins played sax on three tracks on the Rolling Stones' Tattoo You, which was #1 for nine weeks in 1981. The fifth recipient this year is cellist Yo-Yo Ma, whose highest-charting album, Songs Of Joy & Peace, reached #20 in 2008. Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 albums. 1. Lil Wayne, Tha Carter IV, 219,000. The album holds at #1 for the second week. Eleven songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by "How To Love," which rebounds from #20 to #10. 2. Adele, 21, 121,000. The former #1 album rebounds from #3 to #2 in its 29th week. It has been in the top five the entire time. Five songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by "Someone Like You," which dips to #2. 3. George Strait, Here For A Good Time, 91,000. This new entry is Strait's 17th top 10 album. The title track vaults from #179 to #76 on Hot Digital Songs. 4. The Beatles, 1, 60,000. The former #1 album re-enters the chart at #4. This is its 18th week in the top 10. It's #1 on both Top Digital Albums and Top Catalog Albums. 5. Red Hot Chili Peppers, I'm With You, 58,000. The album drops from #2 to #5 in its second week. "The Adventures Of Rain Dance Maggie" holds at #74 on Hot Digital Songs. 6. Jay-Z and Kanye West, Watch The Throne, 49,000. The former #1 album drops from #4 to #6 in its fifth week. It has been in the top 10 the entire time. Two songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs. "Otis" (featuring Otis Redding) drops from #22 to #32. "Ni**as In Paris" jumps from #89 to #75. 7. Maroon 5, Hands All Over, 29,000. The album rebounds from #23 to #7 in its 20th week. This is its third week in the top 10. Two songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs. "Moves Like Jagger" (featuring Christina Aguilera) logs its third week at #1. "Never Gonna Leave This Bed" jumps from #183 to #178. 8. Various Artists, Now 39, 27,000. The album rebounds from #10 to #8 in its fifth week. It has been in the top 10 the entire time. It has sold 279K copies. 9. Beyonce, 4, 25,000. The former #1 album drops from #7 to #9 in its 11th week. This is its 10th week in the top 10. Three songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by "Love On Top," which drops from #10 to #41. 10. Foster The People, Torches. The album rebounds from #12 to #10 in its 16th week. This is its second week in the top 10. Two songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs. "Pumped Up Kicks" dips from #2 to #3. "Helena Beat" bows at #193. Four albums drop out of the top 10 this week. David Guetta's Nothing But The Beat drops from #5 to #18, Jake Owen's Barefoot Blue Jean Night drops from #6 to #13, Game's The R.E.D. Album drops from #8 to #19 and Barbra Streisand's What Matters Most drops from #9 to #15. Hugh Laurie's Let Them Talk debuts at #16. Laurie stars in the Fox series House, for which he has received seven Emmy nominations (six for Outstanding Lead Actor and one as executive producer of the series). Laurie joins an impressive roster of actors who have landed top 20 albums during the runs of prime-time dramatic series in which they starred. Others include Vincent Edwards (Ben Casey), Richard Chamberlain (Dr. Kildare), Bill Cosby (I Spy), Don Johnson (Miami Vice) and Bruce Willis (Moonlighting). Victorious: Music From The Hit TV Show holds at #41 in its sixth week. It's the #1 soundtrack for the sixth week...Country Strong drops from #83 to #87 in its 33rd week. It's the top-ranking soundtrack to a theatrically-released movie for the 18th week. Lindsey Buckingham's Seeds We Sow bows at #45. Buckingham first charted in 1975 with an eponymous album by Fleetwood Mac. He first charted as a solo artist in 1981 with Law And Order. As of this week, Creedence Clearwater Revival's Chronicle (The 20 Greatest Hits) has sold 6 million copies since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales for Billboard in 1991. And that impressive tally doesn't include the album's first 15 years of sales. Doris Day's My Heart enters the U.K. album chart at #9. Day had a song in the top 10 ("Sugarbush," a duet with Frankie Laine) the week of the very first U.K. chart: Nov. 14, 1952. She landed her first top 10 hit in the U.S. in April 1945, as the featured singer on Les Brown and his Orchestra's immortal "Sentimental Journey." Day is one of the few singers from that era who is still living. Day, 89, lives in California. Contagion was #1 at the box-office over the weekend. AC/DC's Live At River Plate is #1 on Top Music Videos for the seventh week. It's the top-selling music video so far this year, ahead of Beyonce's I Am...World Tour and an all-star concert recording of Les Miserables. Coming Attractions: Lady Antebellum's Own The Night is expected to be next week's top new entry. Also due: Bush's Sea Of Memories, Staind's Staind, Dream Theater's A Dramatic Turn Of Events, Alice Cooper's Welcome 2 My Nightmare, Anthrax's Worship Music, Primus' Green Naugahyde, Devil Wears Prada's Dead Throne, Steve Holy's Love Don't Run, The Kooks' Junk Of The Heart and Brantley Gilbert's Halfway To Heaven.

Physical cds are still dropping like a rock and will continue to do so. Digital albums are driving the ytd increases, it appears.

For week ending August 21, sales of physical CDs were down just 4.5% compared to 2010 (129.698m vs. 135.868m), so that's a bit better than "dropping like a rock." :) I do agree, though, that they will keep dipping unless something major happens to revitalize the format.
Digital album sales were up 19.1% compared to where they stood at the same time in 2010.

It depends on the artists as well. Lil Wayne sells digital albums, RHCP for example mainly physicals.

Market watch through the 9/17 chart CDs down 4% (143M to 137M) Digital albums up 19.8% (55.7M to 66.7M)
or digital is up 11 million albums, CDs are down 6 million
This seems to be the first year digital is making up for the slide in physical product

Yah, with continued year-to-year growth, digital albums are picking up the slack a little bit.
Vinyl albums continue to see upticks, though at 3m or so, still not making a huge dent. But, increases are increases.

Helps that this week last year was the lowest weekly total ever for the SoundScan era It'll be interesting when we get to Speak Now's week Isn't that the week we get new music from Coldplay, Drake, Kelly Clarkson and Michael Buble? It likely won't total 1 million that Taylor sold but it'll definitely cushion the blow.

I wonder how often it is that the #1 album & #1 digital song have sold almost the exact same amount in a week? Lil Wayne - 219K, MLJ - 220K.

Continuing from last week's BB200 thread... I saw Air Supply's GH Live priced at both Walmart and Target today for $5.00. Continuing with the Air Supply theme They are releasing a new single to itunes in October called 'Sanctuary'

So it looks like Walmart, Target and Best Buy may have some of the same albums priced at $4.99/$5. I didn't see Air Supply at Best Buy, but I did some there that I also saw in the $5 Walmart bin. Air Supply ready to rock the charts again- Adele's ballad success will open the doors for the duo... Well, probably not, but, anyway.

Wow- I did not realize how close these records are !

I also did not realize that Taylor recently took over Lady Antebellum's last record, but I would not surprised if Lady A. overtakes Taylor again in the new few weeks since their new record is out now.

^The album had gained a little bit after the VMAs last week, and so that combined with possible end of sale-pricing probably resulted in the decline. It is, though, an underwhelming overall performance given all of the airplay success.
