And this week is no different, as her "21" album hits its 17th week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart (95,000; down 9%). "21" has been No. 1 longer than any other album since "The Bodyguard" soundtrack wrapped a 20-week run at No. 1 on the chart dated May 29, 1993. Could "21" hold on another week at the top? That all depends on how new albums from Tim McGraw ("Emotional Traffic"), Celtic Woman ("Believe") and Kellie Pickler ("100 Proof") -- among others -- sell this week. Also new to market: the "2012 Grammy Nominees" compilation. Elsewhere on this week's chart, the "Kidz Bop 21" album debuts at No. 2 with 59,000 sold. That entry grants the long-running series its 14th top 10 set and fourth to reach the runner-up slot. (The "Kidz" have yet to claim a No. 1 set on the Billboard 200.) The last "Kidz" set -- "Kidz Bop 20" -- started at No. 2 as well, with 69,000 sold on the chart dated Aug. 6, 2011. The second-highest debut arrives at No. 7 by James Fortune & FIYA, who sees its "Identity" land with 18,000. It's the best sales week and highest charting album for the gospel singer -- who also debuts at No. 1 on the Gospel Albums chart. On the latter tally, it's his first leader after reaching No. 2 twice previously. As for the rest of the top 10 this week, the Black Keys' "El Camino" holds at No. 3 (29,000; down 20%) while Drake's "Take Care" is also stationary at No. 4 (29,000; down 8%). (Only a couple hundred sales separate the two titles this week.) Rihanna's "Talk That Talk" is up two slots to No. 5 (20,000; down 8%), Young Jeezy's "TM103: Hustlerz Ambition" is steady at No. 6 (19,000; down 19%), and Toby Keith's "Clancy's Tavern" zooms 22-8 with 17,000 (up 27%). The latter album's physical CD was sale priced for just $4.99 at Target stores last week. Also only $4.99 last week: George Strait's "Icon" greatest hits (118-66 with 6,000; up 63%) and Le'Andria Johnson's "The Awakening of Le'Andria Johnson" (174-79 with 5,000; up 78%). Rounding out the top 10 are Coldplay's "Mylo Xyloto" (moving 8-9 with 17,000; down 13%) and Nickelback's "Here and Now" (falling 9-10 with just under 17,000; down 13%). Right outside the top 10 is the third biggest entry of the week, as Attack Attack's "This Means War" bows at No. 11 (17,000). Right behind that is the surging "Joyful Noise" soundtrack, which zips 21-12 with a bit under 17,000 (up 23%). On the Digital Songs chart, David Guetta's "Turn Me On," featuring Nicki Minaj, blasts from No. 7 to No. 1, selling 198,000 downloads (up a whopping 44%). It's the first No. 1 on the Digital tally for either artist, and should bode well for the song's fortunes on the overall Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. (News on the latter list will be released later on Wednesday.) Last week's No. 1, Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain," slips to No. 2 with 185,000 (down 4%). Right behind her is a hard-charging Kelly Clarkson, which sees her "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" fly 11-3 with 175,000 sold (up 48%). Tyga's "Rack City" falls one spot to No. 4 (148,000; down 11%), Flo Rida's "Good Feeling" slips 2-5 with 142,000 (down 21%) and Rihanna's "We Found Love" holds at No. 6 with 140,000 (up less than 1%). LMFAO's "Sexy and I Know It" slides three rungs to No. 7 (134,000; down 14%), Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa's "Young, Wild & Free" drops three to No. 8 (134,000; down 11%) and Jessie J's "Domino" hits the top 10 for the first time, climbing 16-9 (122,000; up 25%). Closing out the top 10 is Katy Perry's "The One That Got Away," which returns to the top 10, rising 14-10 with 117,000 sold (up 9%). The latte benefits from an acoustic version of the song, which was released to digital retailers on Jan. 16. Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Jan. 22) totaled 5.01 million units, down 1% compared to the sum last week (5.10 million) and down 4% compared to the comparable sales week of 2011 (5.25 million). Year to date album sales stand at 15.95 million, up 3% compared to the same total at this point last year (15.54 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 27.89 million downloads, down 2% compared to last week (28.56 million) and up 6% stacked next to the comparable week of 2011 (26.38 million). Year to date track sales are at 89.21 million, up 7% compared to the same total at this point last year (83.60 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2011 when: Amos Lee's "Mission Bell" rang the bell at No. 1, debuting with 40,000. Iron & Wine's "Kiss Each Other Clean" started in the runner-up slot with 39,000. The previous week's No. 1, the Decemberists' "The King Is Dead," fell to No. 10 with 29,000 (down 69%).

It's the longest run for a regular studio album (excluding soundtracks) since Billy Ray Cyrus' Some Gave All logged 17 weeks at #1 in 1992. It's the longest run for an album by a British artist since the Police's Synchronicity was #1 for 17 weeks in 1983. (Two of the three members of that trio were born in England.) Only two albums by British (or majority-British) acts have had longer runs at #1. Fleetwood Mac's Rumours logged 31 weeks at #1 in 1977-'78. (Three of the five members that pop-rock group were born in England.) The Bee Gees' Saturday Night Fever soundtrack logged 24 weeks at #1 in 1978. (All three members of the brother trio were born in England.) 21 returns to #1 in the U.K. for a 20th week on top. 21 is the first non-soundtrack ever to log 17 or more weeks at #1 in both the U.S. and the U.K. Only three other albums (all of them soundtracks) have accomplished this feat: the 1958 South Pacific soundtrack (115 weeks at #1 in the U.K., 31 weeks on top in the U.S.), Elvis Presley's 1961 Blue Hawaii soundtrack (18 weeks in the U.K., 20 weeks in the U.S.) and the Bee Gees' Saturday Night Fever soundtrack (18 weeks in the U.K., 24 weeks in the U.S.) What's the most successful ongoing series of albums in the nearly 56-year history of The Billboard 200? If you said the Now series, step to the front of the class. A whopping 45 albums in the long-running Now series have made top 10 since 1998. (That includes 40 regular installments, plus five themed editions devoted to Christmas songs, country and #1 hits.) Do you know what franchise is in second place? It's the Kidz Bop series, which this week lands its 14th top 10 installment as Kidz Bop 21 debuts at #2. Kidz Bop 21 is the third consecutive album in this series (and the fourth all told) to debut at #2. The series has yet to yield a #1 album. Want me to keep going with the list of top franchises? Glee is in third place, with 13 top 10 albums or EPs. The annual Grammy Nominees series is in fourth place, with 10 top 10 albums. (That total will likely jump to 11 next week with the arrival of Grammy Nominees 2012.) A sticker on the cover of every Kidz Bop album states: "Today's biggest hits sung by kids for kids." That's one of the most clever disclaimers I've ever seen. They're taking the series' biggest liability (these aren't the original versions) and turning it into a selling point. Brilliant! Toby Keith's Clancy's Tavern jumps from #22 to #8 in its 13th week. This is its second week in the top 10. It returns to #1 on Top Country Albums for the first time since October. It's Keith's first album to spend more than one week at #1 on the country album chart since Honkytonk University topped the chart for seven weeks in 2005. The album's resurgence is linked to the success of his Glee-boosted single "Red Solo Cup," which has climbed as high as #15 on the Hot 100. It's Keith's highest-charting single in a Hot 100 career which dates to 1993. The albums at #8, #9 and #10 this week (Clancy's Tavern, Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto and Nickelback's Here And Now) each sold just 17K copies, slightly fewer than the album that held the #10 spot last week, Now 40. What's the significance of this? Now 40 set a record for the slimmest weekly sales tally of any top 10 album since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales for Billboard in 1991. That record is now held by this week's #10 album, Here And Now. Three albums by Etta James rank in the top half of The Billboard 200 in the week after her death. Best Of Etta James jumps from #62 to #46, Her Best bows at #59 and At Last! re-enters at #96. These three albums sold a combined total of nearly 19K copies. If this fan interest had focused on just one album, it would have ranked #7 this week. It's #1 on Top Catalog Albums for the 32nd week...Ani DiFranco's Which Side Are You On? debuts at #26. It's her fourth album to crack the top 30…Anthony Green's Beautiful Things bows at #27. Green, the lead singer of Circa Survive and The Sound Of Animals Fighting, first charted as a solo artist with Avalon in 2008. Underworld Awakening was #1 at the box-office over the weekend. The soundtrack, featuring such acts as Evanescence, Linkin Park and The Cure, debuts at #175. Adele's Live At The Royal Albert Hall holds at #1 on Top Music Videos. The DVD sold 17K copies this week, bringing its eight-week total to 511K. Coming Attractions: Tim McGraw's Emotional Traffic is expected to be next week's top new entry. Also due: 2012 Grammy Nominees, Lamb of God's Resolution, Chimes of Freedom: The Songs Of Bob Dylan, Kellie Pickler's 100 Proof, Seal's Soul 2, Celtic Woman's Believe, iCarly II soundtrack, The Scorpions' Comeback, Ingrid Michaelson's Human Again and Lacuna Coil's Dark Adrenaline. Shameless Plug I: We all know that Adele is going to sweep the Grammys on Feb. 12. So does this mean that Grammy night is going to be completely devoid of suspense? No. There are 72 categories in which Adele isn't nominated, and which, as a result, remain competitive. I've noticed for weeks now that if Adele's CD/DVD could chart on the albums chart, it would have been right there at the bottom of the top 10. So she essentially has had three albums in the top 20 for weeks now!

Sales declined from last year -- just noticed that. 3 weeks in we're still overall ahead but we seem to be treading water. Rather than reversing a trend and growing, I'm wondering if the past 2 years have just been a case of the market leveling off to the "new normal."

The Huey Lewis release is the 2006 release, Greatest Hits and Videos, I gather? It's the band's top-selling compilation- though it only reached No. 61 on the BB 200. As we've seen, a number of acts that had hot hit streaks fort a time don't end up with huge-selling compilations.

One is definitely the 70s rock band with 'Complete Greatest Hits'
the other appears to be the Disney movie soundtrack

Yah- it must be the soundtrack. Not sure why the to-date total would be a bit lower than when reported some time back.
And, that Huey Lewis GH is just the audio on iTunes. The physical release included a DVD and a version without the DVD.

^Pat Benatar was another 80s hitmaker who went years without a certification. Best Shots was certified gold in 1990, and then platinum in 2001- and then Greatest Hits went gold in 2007. While these compilations may not end up as huge sellers, they do bring them back to the charts and fare respectably enough in the i-Tunes era.
