Our estimates are based on total earnings from May 2011 to May 2012—the amount of money an act makes from record sales, touring, endorsements, merchandise sales and other ventures before subtracting management fees, legal costs and taxes (which can gobble up the bulk of a big payday). The totals were compiled with the help of data from Pollstar, RIAA and others, as well as interviews with industry insiders including concert promoters, lawyers, managers, agents and, in some cases, the musicians themselves. 01. Dr Dre: $110 Million 02. Roger Waters: $88 Million 03. Elton John: $80 Million 04. U2: $78 Million 05. Take That: $69 Million 06. Bon Jovi: $60 Million 07. Britney Spears: $58 Million 08. Paul McCartney: $57 Million (tie) 08. Taylor Swift: $57 Million (tie) 10. Justin Bieber: $55 Million (tie) 10. Toby Keith: $55 Million (tie) 12. Rihanna: $53 Million 13. Lady GaGa: $52 Million 14. Foo Fighters: $47 Million 15. Diddy: $45 Million (tie) 15. Katy Perry: $45 Million (tie) 17. Kenny Chesney: $44 Million 18. Beyoncé: $40 Million 19. Red Hot Chili Peppers: $39 Million 20. Jay-Z: $38 Million 21. Coldplay: $37 Million 22. Adele: $35 Million (tie) 22. Kanye West: $35 Million (tie) 24. Michael Bublé: $34 Million 25. Sade: $33 Million full article here

GaGa pulling in $52 million without any music or touring in the US :'( I HIGHLY doubt that she made $52 million without residuals from the MB Tour or an advance for the BTWB Tour.

What the article says regarding Gaga "13. Lady Gaga ($52 million) The singer-songwriter still makes plenty of money off of music sales, padding her coffers with a new tour and new fragrance Fame."

If it is true that this only extends up until May then most of Gaga's worldwide touring doesn't count either. Not sure how payments happen-I didn't think artists got one lump sum at the beginning of the tour ha ha. Maybe a split-even so, pretty impressive for basically doing nothing in the time period this was set except being a "flop" and "over" according to the internet.

...and releasing Born This Way. For some reason I had it in my head that BTW was released in February (I guess I was thinking of the SINGLE) Still pretty good for such a massive flop album that proves she is over.

Dre being #1 is exactly why Detox will never come out.

Britney's numbers are extremely good considering the Femme Fatale era was a disappointment by Britney standards.

Dre being #1 is exactly why Detox will never come out. Especially not with all the promo that his headphones get from basically every artist

However, I believe Michael Jackson and Elvis still rule these kind of lists.

18. Beyoncé: $40 Million No tour. May 2011 to May 2012She toured last year, didn't she? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Beyonc%C3%A9_Knowles_concert_tours#Promo_toursThe 4 Promo Tour, 4 Intimate Nights With Beyonce, and Revel Presents: Beyonce Live are the three that would count in the time period. The promo tour was three to four weeks and mainly consisted of festival appearances, and the latter two were only four shows each. It was a very light schedule. (Actually, Revel Presents might not be included. Is it May 1, 2011 to May 1, 2012 or May 31 to May 31? If it's the former, then Revel took place after that.) I'm most impressed with Dr. Dre...those damn headphones! I hear they're overrated for the price that they are. Made me sad, I wanted a pair at first. And Sade made all that money solely on touring and whatever royalties they made during the 12 months

^Thanks! So Beyonce's total is from her album/single/video sales and product endorsements. Seems kind of high... "After giving birth to baby Blue Ivy in January, Beyoncé took a break from her hectic touring schedule. But she still earns big from old hits, new album 4 and non-musical ventures like her House of Dereon clothing line and endorsement deals with companies like L'Oreal and DirecTV."

Wow at Adele. I didn't realize touring made that much of a difference.

Wow at Adele. I didn't realize touring made that much of a difference. Touring is truly an artist's bread and butter. ...Unless you can sell albums like Adele.

However, I believe Michael Jackson and Elvis still rule these kind of lists. If we take into account dead people and defunct groups, I'm sure the Beatles are way up there too, their catalog still sells extremely well.

Imagine her songwriting checks :o Because of the eligibility period, will Mariah be on next years list after her Idol stint? Really impressive for Britney too. I think I read in the comments section that MJ actually made the most overall, too?

Imagine her songwriting checks :o Because of the eligibility period, will Mariah be on next years list after her Idol stint? Really impressive for Britney too. I think I read in the comments section that MJ actually made the most overall, too? Yeah, the author of the article commented that MJ made 145 million last year :o No mention of Elvis or the Beatles, though I'm sure they also probably made more than all of the living artists. Taylor's songwriting royalties alone would probably keep her in the top 25, or just shy of it. I'm so envious of that b. :'( As for next year, Mariah's Idol stint would be included, so she might make the list. If she does I'd expect her to be in the lower range. There won't be any tour revenue obviously, and her next album is probably going to be released in March or April so she'll only get to count the early portion of those sales. But between her Idol salary, her royalties, and her non-musical ventures (perfumes/accessories/endorsements), I can see her easily raking in $30-40 million. I wish we had a top 50, I wouldn't be surprised if she was in it and that would give a better idea of where we can expect her to land on next year's list. I think we'll see Madonna show up on next year's list too. It's a bit surprising not to see her on this one but then, the MDNA tour fell outside of the eligibility period.
