Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 3/7/2010 by Allen Jacobs Pop/Country act Lady Antebellum finally bumped Sade's Soldier Of Love, taking the #1 spot after six weeks on the charts. Sade does have a chance however of being the first 2010 urban release to go platinum. At best, the charts will see that next week. If not, with certainty, the week after. The Black Eyed Peas enjoyed their 39th week on the charts. The group kept the #8 seat warm for The E.N.D. Already at double platinum, a new video "Imma Be Rocking That Body," has will.i.am, Fergie, Taboo and Apl.De.Ap staying as close to the top of the charts as they've been in months. will.i.am will soon be working on Usher's Raymond v. Raymond. There were two new additions to the Top 15. Raheem DeVaughn's Love & War Masterpeace concept album received an impressive Top 10 debut. The DMV Soul singer's third album features Ludacris and Wale ("The Greatness" ) and a slew of guest R&B singers on the posse cut "Nobody Wins A War." With all the chart movement, Lil Wayne's Rebirth fell six spots. This was the last week of Wayne out of prison to promote the album, which may hurt its platinum potential. Wayne's homie DJ Khaled's Victory album debuted at #14. This was seven points and 30,000 units less than Khaled's last album, We Global. Victory is getting stronger critical response, as the album boasts three Rick Ross appearances, as well as features from Drake, Young Jeezy and Snoop Dogg. * Please note: figures below approximated to nearest thousandth. Top 200 Album Sales (Top 5 Hip Hop/R&B) Rank Artist Album This Week Est. Total 2 Sade Soldier Of Love 79,000 899,000 8 Black Eyed Peas The E.N.D. 46,000 2,228,000 9 Raheem DeVaugn The Love & War Masterpeace 45,000 45,000 12 Lil Wayne Rebirth 32,000 393,000 14 DJ Khaled Victory 28,000 28,000 Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 closes in on 1,660,000 units sold, while Eminem's Relapse crossed the 1,875,000 unit mark. Last week, Gucci Mane's The State Vs. Radric Davis out-sold both platinum rappers, coming in at #51. The Warner Brothers/Asylum release crossed the 300,000 unit mark, as its creator remains in prison, limiting marketing. Drake did indeed surpass 400,000 units with So Far Gone last week. Although Universal and Cash Money treat this EP as unofficial album, the release may likely go gold, making a strong case for retail versions of free download music. 50 Cent's Before I Self Destruct fell 40 spots last week, outside of the Top 100. This movement may have a lot to do with the close sales race, decided by 3,000 weekly units or less. Freeway & Jake One's The Stimulus Package hung in on the charts for a third week. Free's first "official" independent album, this on the Minneapolis-based Rhymesayers label was supported with a whole album's worth of production from Seattle's most prolific producer, Jake One. Rank Artist Album This Week Est. Total 51 Gucci Mane The State Vs. Can the Kidz In The Hall get the mainstream love they seem to be seeking? Stay tuned to next week at HipHopDX. www.hiphopdx.com/index/news/id.10807/title. Have a safe journey areyoureadytojump.

Thank you!
Great to see Sade scanned very close to 900k. A milli should happen in about two weeks.

Remember when 50 Cent sold more in his first week than he has to date? (that happens for other acts, too) How times- and public likes- have changed.

I was just talking about that in another thread, how whenever a project performs disappointingly, some love blaming the label, when the act itself is just as much to blame (for one reason or another). www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/content_display/charts/chart_alert/e3ibf16730c88012cb184735db0b27f1ccdLady A Returns to No. 1; Blake Shelton Earns Top Debut March 10, 2010 Editor: Keith Caulfield; Contributors: Gary Trust, Alex Vitoulis; Editorial Director: Silvio Pietroluongo Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" returns to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, bumping Sade's "Soldier of Love" down to No. 2 ... A whopping six albums debut in the top 10 of the tally, the most since last October ... Who starts high? Why, Blake Shelton, "American Idol" contestant Danny Gokey, the "Almost Alice" compilation soundtrack, Lifehouse, Raheem DeVaughn and Easton Corbin ... Just missing the top 10 is Jason Derulo, whose self-titled debut starts at No. 11. FLASH POINTS• After a three-week break at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" returns to No. 1 with 126,000 (up 6%), marking its third total week atop the list. • It opened at No. 1 with 481,000 six weeks ago, and then held at No. 1 for a second week with 209,000. The set stepped aside for three weeks to the runner-up slot, playing second fiddle to Sade's "Soldier of Love." The latter set drops to No. 2 this week with 79,000 (down 37%). • This is the first time an album has returned to No. 1 after a three week absence in over a year. The last time it happened was on the chart dated Dec. 27, 2008 when Taylor Swift's "Fearless" climbed from No. 2 to No. 1 in its fifth week on the chart. The set had debuted at No. 1 five weeks earlier with 592,000 and then let three albums take successive turns in the pole position before returning to the top. (Those three albums were Beyonce's "I Am ... Sasha Fierce," Kanye West's "808s and Heartbreak" and Britney Spears' "Circus.") • "Fearless" would go on to rack a total of 11 non-consecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200. • Lady A's bounce back to No. 1 is just the beginning of the big news this week on the chart. Six new albums arrive in the top 10 -- the most the tally has seen since the list dated Oct. 17, 2009 when eight started in the region. • Right behind Sade, we see the bow of Blake Shelton's new "Hillbilly Bone" at No. 3 with 71,000. It's the country singer's sixth studio set and it earns his highest rank ever on the chart. Additionally, it claims his best sales week since his second album "The Dreamer" started with 77,000 at No. 8 in 2003. • As mentioned last week, Shelton's album is a shorter-than-usual six-song effort that carries an attractive list price. It's the first offering in Warner Music's new "six pak" concept, where some of the company's acts aim to release value-priced six-song albums in close intervals. Shelton's plan is to issue at least one or two more six-song sets before the end of the year. (This would buck the tradition of an act dropping a full-length album every year or two.) • Last week, Wal-Mart, Target and Amazon.com offered "Hillbilly's" physical CD for a sale price of $4.99 while Best Buy sold it at $6.99. Both the iTunes and Amazon MP3 stores were selling it for a higher price than some of their physical competitors, as the etailers had it listed for $5.99. • Up next in the parade of debuts is last year's third-place finisher from "American Idol," Danny Gokey, who sees his debut set "My Best Days" land at No. 4 with 65,000. Over on the Top Country Albums chart, it starts at No. 3 behind Lady A and Shelton. • Gokey's set follows the post-season eight "Idol" album releases from winner Kris Allen ("Kris Allen," No. 11 with an 80,000 debut), runner-up Adam Lambert ("For Your Entertainment," No. 3; 198,000) and fourth-place finisher Allison Iraheta ("Just Like You," No. 35; 32,000). • The "Almost Alice" album, a soundtrack/companion set to the new Johnny Depp film "Alice in Wonderland," debuts at No. 5 with 58,000. The set boasts a variety of acts contributing songs that were inspired by the film's subject matter. It also sports the movie's end-titles track "Alice" by Avril Lavigne. • Lifehouse's "Smoke and Mirrors" is right behind "Alice," entering at No. 6 with 54,000. The set is the fifth studio release from the band and was originally scheduled for a December 2009 bow. It's the act's fourth top 10 set and it arrives with their best sales week since its self-titled third album entered with 63,000 at No. 10 in 2005. • Two long-running albums manage to cling to their top 10 perches, as Lady Gaga's "The Fame" slips two rungs to No. 7 (49,000; up 2%) while the Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D." falls four slots to No. 8 (46,000; down 7%). • Closing out the top 10 are ... two more debuts! Raheem DeVaughn starts at No. 9 with his "The Love and MasterPeace" (45,000). His previous album, "Love Behind the Melody," debuted and peaked at No. 5 with 45,000 in 2008. Lastly, country singer Easton Corbin arrives with his self-titled full-length debut set at No. 10 with 43,000. Just missing the top 10 is the eponymous first album from Jason Derulo, bowing at No. 11 with 42,000. • Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending March 7) totaled 6.27 million units, up 5% compared to the sum last week (5.99 million) and down 11% compared to the comparable sales week of 2009 (7.06 million). • A LOOK AHEAD:• As for next week's Billboard 200, look for Ludacris to possibly score his fourth No. 1 album as industry analysts suggest his new "Battle of the Sexes" could sell anywhere between 120,000 and 150,000 by week's end on Sunday, March 14. • Ludacris' last album, "Theater of the Mind," debuted and peaked at No. 5 when it started with 213,000 according to Nielsen SoundScan in late 2008. If "Battle" triumphs next week at No. 1, it will follow his earlier chart-toppers: "Release Therapy" (2006), "The Red Light District" (2004) and "Chicken N Beer" (2003). • The rapper/actor is on a roll, as the album's lead single "How Low" already hit No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. In addition, Justin Bieber's current single "Baby" -- which features Luda -- reached No. 5. • After Ludacris, the next-highest entries on next week's Billboard 200 chart look to be Gorillaz's "Plastic Beach" and Jimi Hendrix's new studio set "Valleys of Neptune." Each may start with maybe 100,000 each. MARKET WATCH• Album units, current chart week: 6.72 million units • Up 5% from last week's charts: 5.99 million units • Down 11% from the comparable week in 2009: 7.06 million units • This week: Only the No. 1 on the Billboard 200 sells more than 100,000 copies. • This week last year on The Billboard 200: U2's "No Line On The Horizon" blasted in at No. 1 with 484,000 -- outselling the titles at Nos. 2 through 18 combined. The previous week's No. 1, Taylor Swift's "Fearless," fell to No. 2 with 52,000 (down 29%) while the second-highest debut arrived at No. 3 from Neko Case's "Middle Cyclone" (44,000). A LOOK AHEAD • Among the albums released this week, due on next week's charts: Ludacris' "Battle of the Sexes," Gorillaz's "Plastic Beach," Jimi Hendrix's "Valleys of Neptune," Gary Allan's "Get Off On the Pain," Serj Tankian's "Elect the Dead Symphony," Miguel Bose's "Cardio," Broken Bells' "Broken Bells," the "Disneymania 7" compilation and three variations of the Selena retrospective "La Leyenda." • Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2009 when: Kelly Clarkson netted her second No. 1 album as "All I Ever Wanted" premiered atop the chart with 255,000. The Dream opened at No. 2 with "Love Vs. Money" (151,000) while the previous week's No. 1 album -- U2's "No Line On the Horizon" -- fell to No. 3 with 132,000 (down 73%).

No, we don't believe anything of the sort. If an act has fans, they decide whether to buy the album or not. BS drama that goes on with a label is just that- BS. Like when Michael Jackson had that feud with Sony and labeled Tommy Mottola the devil- okkkkaaayyy. Or Prince had his very public feud with his label. The labels may be part of the problem, but the act itself is the other.

Yeah, that's exactly why the album is a massive bomb. It has nothing to do with the fact that he makes terrible music and has no talent.

^ I don't understand how "In Da Club" got as much acclaim as it is- it's one loop repeated through the whole track (and he does that often). His commercial appeal has been in gradual decline for the last couple of albums, anyhow.

416k in this current climate is nothing to be ashamed of especially when you consider illegal downloads in the urban market (especially so) are rife. I am surprised he did this well tbh.

Surely the 50 fans noticed his album to album sales declines from the start.
GRODT - almost 8 million TM - 5 millioon The 3rd one - a little over 1 million
This album was always going to barely crawl past 500,000.
His next album will totally bomb. He's the new Nelly, only not quite as successful to begin with.

There are several Hip Hop artists who are selling more than that. I mean, Drake's EP, which was originally a mixtape that was released onto the Internet for FREE, has scanned just as much. Po 50.

Yes but Drake's album crosses over into commercial territory so thus appealing to a market who wouldnt have heard of him at the time of the promo release. As good as Drake is I cannot see his debut album selling as much as 50 Cents debut album did. 50 Cent's current album is far more geared towards the Urban market in that its acknowledged that its not as "commercial" as his past albums have been. I wouldnt call it a flop - and it still has more singles to come from it.

Illegal downloads affect every act that releases an album. Let's try to steer clear of that an an excuse for individual albums performing, when it's a widespread issue.

^ Yes, but 50 Cent has yet to have a hit from this album - urban or otherwise. And I doubt any more singles will be released from this album, especially after "Do You Think About Me" didn't perform well. I don't see how anyone can say that this album isn't anything other than a flop. BISD IS a FLOP!
But I do agree that Drake's debut won't sell as impressively as 50's debut.

* Lady Antebellum is QUITE a success story. They deserve it too. Their "Need You Now" single is hot, and the lead singer Hillary Scott has a beautiful voice. I believe they will be a force to be reckoned with in country music for a long, long time. * Last week's chart included 8 platinum releases in the top 20 (now there's 7). However, THIS week's chart is crazy in that 8 of the top 20 albums are debuts! Usually there are a few new releases that hit that mark per week, but 8 is pretty big. The artists that debuted this week are: Blake Shelton, Danny Gokey, Lifehouse, Raheem DeVaughn, Easton Corbin, Jason Derulo, DJ Khaled, and the "Almost Alice" compilation. That's a nice mix. * IN PLATINUM WATCH NEWS, Sade is currently only 101K copies away from reaching that million unit plateau with her "Soldier of Love". Lady Gaga's 8-track "Fame Monster" bonus release is also close (now only 150K copies away from platinum). However, Justin Bieber is currectly the closest to a million: only 2K to go. So in other words, he'll definitely hit that rank next week making him 'platinum in 17 weeks' (a lil more than 4 months to do it... not bad). * When you combine the sales of Lady Gaga's original "Fame" release with her bonus disc "The Fame Monster", she has officially sold around 3 million albums in the U.S. I gotta be honest, that's great, but the level of her success and exposure seems to far exceed that number. I'm actually quite surprised she hasn't been able to sell in Taylor Swift territory (who has sold over 5 and a half million copies of her latest release, and over 4 and a half million copies of her debut). I'm not sure why that is. Is Gaga just famous for being famous? Are people more interested in her as a character than they are in buying her music? I guess we'll have a clearer picture of her potential when her sophomore album is released. * Total Album Sales have increased by about 300K this week. Yippee! Hopefully we can keep this trend going through the summer! misstlc.blogspot.com/

I kinda agree with that blogger about Lady GaGa's sales. Don't get me wrong. Her sales are fine, but considering her mega popularity, I thought she would have done a lot more. I was thinking about this yesterday actually. I kinda have the same feelings about Beyonce too.
Also, the fact that Taylor was able to do nearly six million with her sophomore album, exceeding the success of her previous album is telling.

If you combine the sales for Lady Gaga wouldn't her total be closer to 4 million? Nearly a million for Fame Monster and 3 million for The Fame=4 millionish, not "around 3"-I am assuming that is a typo. Overall, I can see both projects finishing out somewhere around 3.5 and 1.5 million units sold for a combined 5+ million albums in America. Not bad when most even hugely successful cds are stalling out before 3 million. Taylor, of course, being the wildly successful exception (well, and Boyle)

Of course Drake won't sell anywhere near 8 million with his debut album. Heck, even the SMASHING SuBo's album didn't get near that.
RE Gaga- she does put some people off, whereas Taylor Swift is a safer album choice. Both Gaga ans Swift, though, have enjoyed mega digital sales.
