I've always wondered what the chart would have looked like if digital sales existed and were as strong as today back between 2000 and 2004 (i.e.: the period when the Hot 100 was primarily airplay driven)
Would Britney Spears have had a #1 with "Ooops, I Did It Again"?
How about the first singles from the other pop powerhouses of the day: "Shape of Heart" or "Bye Bye Bye"?
Eminem has had had just one #1 song for the majority of his career until the last 18 months when suddenly he's had 3 more thanks mostly to sales. Given his earlier popularity is it impossible to think that he could have had others, like "The Real Slim Shady" or "Without Me"?
Digital sales propel less traditional pop fare up the charts - maybe not to the top 10, but certainly more conspicuously than just airplay. I would have been surprised if early singles by Josh Groban or Norah Jones would'nt have been absolute smashes...
What about someone like Shania Twain who had the biggest album from the 1990s? Curiosity in her first new single was huge, but when it finally came in 2002 it sort of fizzled on the radio crossover side. Digital sales might have propelled it into the top 5....
Would we have had even longer stays at #1 for huge hits like Yeah! / Hot in Herre / Foolish as a mix of huge airplay and sales kept the songs at the top longer? Or might the sales competition be too fierce?
And would R&B / Hip Hop have had such a stranglehold on the top charts in 2002 β 2004?
All interesting things to contemplate....

^No real way of knowing, as other tracks would have had sales, too. "Toxic"did top the Hot Digital Tracks chart, I think, but sales at that time were still low- I think its weekly sales was 14,000 at the time. So, with that and its No. 10 Hot 100 Airplay peak, it would not have been a surefire No. 1 on the Hot 100.
For pre-2003 tracks, kinda pointless to speculate, as there was no digital chart. Labels had the option of releasing regular (non-maxi) CD singles or not.

Mariah's "Loverboy" could have been another #1 for her.

Shania would of had bigger success than Taylor Swift with singles if she had singles included...she was always a big seller!

I don't see how "Loverboy" could have been another No. 1. As it is, with little to no competition from other tracks that had CD singles, it peaked at No. 2 (with a No. 50 airplay peak). Surely Destiny's Child's "Bootylicious" would have enjoyed high digital sales, too.
Like I said, for pre-2003 tracks, there's no way of knowing anything, as there was no digital sales. May as well go back to the 90s and 80s and speculate. :)

But the 80s and the 90s had sales ingredients in the Hot 100 formula, so we do know how things evened out.
I know this is all speculation, but the one thing I have always wondered is how the charts would have been different *if* there was a healthy sales mix to that 2000 - 2004 period.

Mariah's "Loverboy" could have been another #1 for her. Let's just be glad it didn't. It was almost to a point that the prices were low so she could get higher sales. I believe other songs would've peaked higher, but not necessarily at #1. Most esp would be the case of the teen pop acts, although I'd say limited to BSB, NSYNC, and Britney, and Eminem. These were the artists who had considerably low airplay, but were huge sellers album and physical single.

While I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with you, my love. You better be careful, you could get reported to a mod by a basement dwelling mimi stan for that. You just desecrated her majesty Mimi by stating obvious provable fact that her chart success post 1996 has only been because of supressed/reduced price sales and standom (with the only exception of WBT) Okayluvyabyebye

'It's Like That' was kind of screwed by the BB rules about digital downloads at the time, so it probably would have been a top 10 hit at least.

Naturally any change in Hot 100 formula always would have resulted in *my fave* having higher peaks. Damn you, Billboard, and your vendetta against *my fave*. >:(

Since digital singles weren't that big pre 05, the better question would be what if record labels continued releasing physical singles.

I'm sure Britney Spears would of had a lot of more number one singles. For Sure[Oops,Stronger,I'm A Slave 4 You and many more] would be strong contenders for the number one spot.

If Jive released physical singles for all of her songs, I'd say "(You) Drive Me Crazy)", "Sometimes", "Oops...", "I'm A Slave 4", and "Toxic" all would've hit #1.

Well, I'd say Sometimes would've been top ten since it was top ten in airplay at the time. You Drive Me Crazy had a huge chance of topping Hot 100 thanks to it's #6 peak on Hot 100 airplay. That's higher than what ...BOMT peaked at. Oops! and Toxic definitely would've made top 5 but I'm not so sure about I'm A Slave For You though. Britney definitely was on a decline during that time.

Slave would have probably done like Gimme More. It's airplay was too weak for her to challenge Alicia and J. Lo for the top spot at the time.

'Slave' was a first single, AND unlike anything she'd done before + that iconic VMA performance, I think if a single was released right after that, she would've been #1. No one else even had a physical single out around that time.

But physical singles were already largely dying by the early 2000's, that's a big part of the reason why record companies stopped releasing them. You can't just assume that if Jive had released physical singles for those songs that they automatically would have sold enough to top the chart.

Re the early 2000s and CD single releases - unpredictable stuff was happening: Vertical Horizon got to #1 when EYW was commercially released - well after airplay had peaked.
Sisqo's Incomplete got to #1 primarily because it had the Thong Song remix on it -
However 98 Degrees couldn't get to #1 with their first single (GMJON) and they were one of the hot teen groups at the time...

Singles only died BECAUSE record labels stopped releasing them, not because people just weren't buying them. During that time, people who actually released singles had a huge advantage over people who didn't. EXAMPLES "A Moment Like This" - Kelly Clarkson (or anything by American Idol alum) "Loverboy" - Mariah Carey "All For You" & "Someone To Call My Lover" - Janet Jackson "U Remind Me" - Usher "Oops" - Blu Cantrell "There She Goes" - Babyface And a host of others.

I've always wondered this myself, jesbib. I'm pretty sure "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" would have been #1 if digital sales had been included during its peak weeks.
I don't know about "Toxic," but I'm positive "Oops I Did It Again" would have been #1 if it had been released as a CD single. I remember being in The Wherehouse in Pasadena and seeing a mother and her daughter looking for the single of the song. The sales person told them, "There is no single," and their jaws droped, like, "What do you mean? It's on the radio."
I sure would like to get a hold of the unpublished Hot Digital Songs charts. Billboard.biz's archive references the peak position and weeks on chart of the unpublished charts on their Hot Digital Songs charts online, but the actual charts available to view only go back to May of 2005, so you can't get the peak dates. Songs that lingered after that date with pre-2005 peak dates include "Since You Been Gone," which peaked at #2 on Hot Digital Songs; Jay-Z/Linkin Parks's "Numb/Encore" hit #1; "Over and Over" by Nelly w/Tim McGraw hit #1.
