Codex Year End Charts : 2011 Edition | |
Welcome to my "Year End Charts" thread! Here I will post my 100 favourite songs of 2011, based on a points system which includes plays, performance on my personal chart, and then a bit of moving songs around. Album tracks aren't eligible to chart on my weekly charts, so they generally chart much lower as they only get points from plays. Songs that were added later in the year don't chart as high, but will probably chart again next year. Keep in mind that this is not a list of the 100 best quality songs released in 2011, but the 100 songs that I enjoyed the most during the year. 100 - 51 will not have commentary, but I will try to add some to the top 50 to make it more interesting. I'm not that great at them, but I'll try.
The first 25 should be posted soon.

50. Look At Me Now (feat. Lil Wayne & Busta Rhymes) - Chris BrownI spent a lot of time trying to decide between Pumped Up Kicks and Look At Me Now for number fifty, but this barely managed to squeeze in. As much as I hate Chris Brown, I think Look At Me Now is his best song since Forever. It's silly with an unusual beat and fun to rap along to. Busta Rhymes' rap on this is insane.49. Rabiosa - Shakira (feat. Pitbull)I can't understand half of the lyrics, but in usual Shakira manner, her voice is pure sex. The horns in it made it stand out immediately for me, though. My favourite part of the song is probably the incredibly fun "Ra-Ta-Ta" she sings halfway through the song. It sounds very similar to Loca though, which keeps it from ranking higher. 48. I'm Into You - Jennifer Lopez (feat. Lil Wayne)This immediately stood out while listening to Love? for the first time. It's the perfect beach song, it makes me feel like I'm drinking a coconut smoothie under some palm trees with shades on whenever I listen to it. Coming off of On The Floor, I was shocked that it flopped, should have been top 10 at least. 47. Lighters - Bad Meets Evil (feat. Bruno Mars)Interesting collaboration, I must say. I never expected to hear them collaborate. I was a bit skeptical to listen to it at first. After a few listens though, I realized that Bruno's whiney voice is actually bearable in small doses. Eminems rap is great as usual, but what surprised me was that Royce's rap was even better than Eminems. The "Bruno can show his ass" line kinda turns me on though, is that bad? 46. The Edge Of Glory - Lady GagaThis was originally my least favourite Gaga single to date when it came out, I thought it was boring with no hook at all. After a while, it started to grow on me. I really liked the saxophone in the bridge, it's very relaxing. Despite the horrible video, I see myself giving this more recurrent play than most of Gagas singles. 45. Don't Wanna Go Home - Jason DeruloIn my opinion, this is the only good song he's released so far from his new album. The Banana Boat Song sample really helps it, it's my favourite part of the song. It's pretty stupid, but fun to sing along to. Originally, this song was a lot better, but it burned on me fast after a few months. 44. Love In America - JTXI liked this a lot more before I found out that the lead singer isn't a hot young guy, but actually a super creepy old guy... Completely ruined the song for me. It sounds like everything else, but I still enjoyed it during the first half of the year. I'll probably regret placing it this high in a year but whatever. 43. Rocketeer - Far East Movement (feat. Ryan Tedder)Pop perfection, is the best way to describe the chorus. It's so soothing and stays in your head forever. I loved Like a G6 last year, but that was mainly because of DEV. Far East Movement is technically the main artist, but they just hinder both songs with their verses. 42. Grenade - Bruno MarsThis was the first Bruno song that I really liked. I hated Nothing On You and Just the Way You Are, Billionaire was decent, but this really stood out for me. It has the same "Lil' girls, I'm so romantic, wet yourselves" message, but the drums and piano set a really dark mood to the song which I really enjoy. 41. Cannibal - Ke$haI AM CATNIPPLE. That's supposed to ruin the song for you, but for me it just made it even better. What I really like about it is that is switches up the usual party lyrics, to something a bit more unique. The yodelling in the bridge is easily my favourite part though, I always pretend that I'm a crazy cannibal that is having a seizure while running towards their prey.

Thank you. :) 40. Sun is Up - InnaFirst single off of Inna's latest album. It's typical Inna, meaning a catchy song with a sick romanian style dance beat. It has a similar beat as most of her songs, but I quite enjoyed it during my trip to Turkey, it's a great song for tanning. 39. Loser Like Me - Glee Cast What kind of Gleek would I be if I didn't include this? I really got into Glee late last year, and was excited when I found out that they were finally going to release an original song. I'd been wanting to chart a normal song from them for quite some time. It's pretty cheesy, but I can't help but love it. 38. Hello - Martin Solveig (feat. Dragonette)This song is so stupid but cute at the same time. Another great song for listening to while going out with your friends during the summer. It captures that fun summery feeling very well. I can only listen to it in small doses though, as it's very repetitive. 37. Bass Down Low - Dev (feat. The Cataracs)The first song of Dev's that I listened to where I actually paid attention to her. Her voice is full of swagger, and blends in great with the skittering synths in the background produced by the Cataracs. 36. In The Dark - Dev (feat. Flo Rida)I Instantly had Calabria nostalgia when I first heard this. I don't know if it's just me, but the saxophone in this makes it feel like a classier, sexier version of it. The video for this features Dev infront of a white screen with hundreds of black hands. It's one of my favourites of the year, I think it fits the song very well. 35. Don't Stop The Party - The Black Eyed PeasThe whoosing synths in the instrumental are great, but Fergies robotic vocals during the chorus really make it come to life. I'm still disappointed that this was their first single to miss the top 40 on Billboard, although I understand how some would consider it annoying. 34. Party Rock Anthem - LMFAO (feat. Lauren Bennett & Goon Rock) The ultimate party song. You can't have a party without playing this at least twice. The line "every day I'm shuffling", is easily one of the most defining of the year, and my personal favourite. It's near impossible to not move your body when those chainsaw synths come on. 33. Run The World - BeyoncéI personally love "Pon De Floor", so it's no surprise that I like this as well, seeing as how the instrumentals are identical. Beyoncés chanting and the marching band beat compliment eachother well. I'm not even a girl but I still feel like shouting at my man to make his own sandwhich when I listen to this. 32. I Need a Doctor - Dr. Dre (feat. Eminem & Skylar Grey)Skylars vocals on this are absolutely beautiful, especially in the intro when it's just her and the soft piano. The song then explodes into a hard Alex Da Kid beat, while Eminem starts rapping about Dr. Dre with sadness flowing from his words. The song has a very mysterious overall feel that I love. 31. The Lazy Song - Bruno MarsFinally a song by him that isn't about the same thing! This song is just cool, laid back, and relaxing. It's the theme song for days where you just had a bunch of finals, but don't have to study anymore, because there are no more tests in the near future. Or, just holidays in general. The video captures the feel of the song perfectly with Bruno dancing around accompanied by monkeys goofing off and having fun in their living room.

30. Give Me Everything - Pitbull (feat. Ne-Yo & Afrojack)A fun, feel good song in the vein of Party Rock Anthem and I Gotta Feeling. It features a few verses of Pitbull rapping about the usual, then Ne-Yos soothing voice and Nayers...voice build into the climatic "Grab somebody sexy, tell 'em hey!" line, dropping into Afrojacks incredible production. Pitbull and Ne-Yos voices mesh surprisingly well with eachother. 29. Barbra Streisand - Duck SauceI can't really say much about this. The lyrics are "Ooh Ooh Ooh Barbra Streisand" x100, and the production is basically on loop, but I can't help but sing along whenever it comes on. It's an infectious, fun dance track. 28. Just Can't Get Enough - Black Eyed PeasThe Black Eyed Peas stray from their party sound, and the result is magical. Fergie vocals are beautiful and give a melancholy feeling of being in love. I hope they release more similar songs in the future, though I enjoy their dance-pop sound aswell. 27. What the Hell - Avril LavigneLead single off of Avrils new album, featuring keyboard riffs and a handclapping beat. It's a song about not giving a f. about anything, and just living your life how you want. It's the most pop song off of Goodbye Lullaby, and in my opinion the best. 26. Take Over Control - Afrojack (feat. Eva Simons)House perfection. This electro house song is easily my favourite by Afrojack in terms of production, and Eva Simons vocals on it just ooze pure sex. The lyrics are about the boy "taking over control"of her body and "turning her on". I added it in July, and it's still in my top 15. Virtually no burn rate. 25. Criminal - Britney SpearsAlthough I wasn't very on-board when this was released, the video for it is her best in a while and it got me on Team Criminal. The flute makes it different from the rest of her songs, it gives it a medieval, Robin Hood vibe. The whole song is about Britney being in love with a Criminal, and everyone trying to separate them but she doesn't care, because they are deeply in love. <3 24. You Make Me Feel - Cobra Starship (feat. Sabi)I despised Sabi when she ruined Drop Dead Beautiful, but she's amazing on this song. Her vocals make the song for me. A bit screamy on the pre-chorus, but good nonetheless. If released a bit earlier in the year, this could have been top 15 as it's still near the top 5 at the end of the year. 23. Rolling in the Deep (Downtown London Remix) - AdeleThe only non official remix on my countdown. As much as I like the original, the Downtown London Remix gave it that little something I felt it was missing. It's a 90's house instrumental, but Adele's vocals don't seem out of place on it in my opinion. Fun Fact: Rolling in the Deep has spent the most weeks on my Personal Chart this year. 22. Where Them Girls At? - David Guetta (feat. Flo Rida & Nicki Minaj)David Guettas second song out of three on my countdown. I liked it a lot more originally, but I still love Nickis rap and the 'Day Day Day" part. The beat is a Sexy Bitch clone, though that isn't too much of a negative. 21. Déja Vu - Inna (feat. Bob Taylor)This actually came out in mid 2009, but I was too busy blasting Hot (top 15 year end '09), and then Amazing and Love in 2010 (both top 10 year end '10) to really give this song a chance. It's not a big switch of from the other three songs mentioned, but it's another romanian house jam.

I love all of your top ten. While I would have preferred one of the other songs there for #1, I'm still very content with your rankings. Well worth the wait! :)
