It appears we've got " dueling countdowns" here. Lol... it seems like he's getting them faster than me, though. He pegged the commercial break when "My Immortal" was just starting on my stream.

OMG at the droppers. Just when you thought the show couldn't get ANY more confusing Fabolous dropping out at 28?!? WTF? From what I understand they used the album version of My Immortal. Nice change of pace. You are totally correct about that one Matt. If and when The Way You Move reaches #1, that's exactly what's going to happen.

So the weirdness continues. For the ever-shrinking number of serious chart fans concerned with the countdown, Fuel at #29 and "moving up a notch" is the hardest to swallow. Either they messed up by not including them last week, or there's some please-the-affiliates rule that a song has to be on a certain number of stations before it can even be eligible for the chart.
And it seemed like there were even more times than last week where Ryan didn't even speak before songs. Looks like they'll be fitting in four extras this week though.

Why do they play songs twice in one show? This is totally ridiculous!

Hmmm...interesting. Seems this week's chart might not be as bad as we thought. I did a side-by-side comparison with R&R's 1/9 chart (since that's the chart Casey would've used this week). The top 30 is almost the same as the "sans recurrent rules" chart (the top 15, in fact, are identical). Below the top 30, all of the currents (except "Bright Lights" ) and none of the recurrents (except, oddly enough, "Unwell" ) are on AT40. If it weren't for those two oddities, you'd almost think that there was some kind of "below 30" recurrent rule (almost...but not quite). It also makes you think that last week's chart was a major fluke.
See for yourself (R&R recurrents are in red):
R&R Rank - AT40 Rank - Artist - Title 50 ** Chingy - Right Thurr 49 40 Murphy Lee feat. Jermaine Dupri - Wat Da Hook Gon Be 48 ** Jason Mraz - The Remedy (I Won't Worry) 47 ** Kelly Clarkson - Miss Independent 46 ** Fabolous feat. Tamia - Into You 45 39 Jay-Z - Change Clothes 44 ** Sean Paul - Get Busy 43 37 Kelly Clarkson - The Trouble With Love Is 42 38 Matchbox Twenty - Unwell 41 ** R. Kelly - Ignition 40 35 Sheryl Crow - The First Cut Is The Deepest 39 ** Evanescence feat. Paul McCoy - Bring Me To Life 38 36 Evanescence - My Immortal 37 34 Fountains Of Wayne - Stacy's Mom 36 33 Good Charlotte - Hold On 35 ** Beyonce' feat. Jay-Z - Crazy In Love 34 32 Beyonce' - Me, Myself And I 33 ** Justin Timberlake - Rock Your Body 32 ** Matchbox Twenty - Bright Lights 31 29 Fuel - Falls On Me 30 31 50 Cent - In Da Club 29 30 Christina Aguilera feat. Lil' Kim - Can't Hold Us Down 28 28 Pink - God Is A DJ 27 27 Michelle Branch - Breathe 26 26 Dido - White Flag 25 23 Eamon - F**k It (I Don't Want You Back) 24 24 Maroon5 - Harder To Breathe 23 25 Black Eyed Peas - Where Is The Love? 22 22 Liz Phair - Why Can't I? 21 21 Staind - So Far Away 20 19 Stacie Orrico - (There's Gotta Be) More To Life 19 20 Nelly, P. Diddy, and Murphy Lee - Shake Ya Tailfeather 18 17 Linkin Park - Numb 17 16 Clay Aiken - Invisible 16 18 Santana feat. Alex Band - Why Don't You And I 15 15 Lil' Jon and The East Side Boyz feat. Ying Yang Twins - Get Low 14 14 Chingy feat. Ludacris and Snoop Dogg - Holidae In 13 13 Jessica Simpson - With You 12 12 Christina Aguilera - The Voice Within 11 11 Trapt - Headstrong 10 10 Beyonce' feat. Sean Paul - Baby Boy 09 09 Ludacris feat. Shawnna - Stand Up 08 08 Kelis - Milkshake 07 07 No Doubt - It's My Life 06 06 Simple Plan - Perfect 05 05 OutKast feat. They had two more currents enter than drop off, played a reasonably new gaining current ("You Don't Know My Name"), and I like the entries better than the droppers. The Number 1 song a year ago is a good extra also, but for the other two extras I don't like "Rock Your Body" and agree that they shouldn't play a song twice. Having recurrents makes it more likely for an artist to be played twice. Out of the four artists played twice, Beyonce and Outkast would be played twice based on the R&R chart and Baby Bash featuring Frankie J (which couldn't be a Long Distance Dedication) and Christina (unless she was a Long Distance Dedication, which would have been for a different song than "Can't Hold Us Down") would not have been played twice.

But THE BOTTOM LINE is, one week on the job and already he's as bad as Rick Dees. It's official. This is the end for decent Top 40 countdowns.

No, Rick Dees is better. At least he respects the recurrent rule. I mean in terms of a WHOLE show.

Rick's chart this week matches up exactly with R&R's 1/9/04 chart. Last week there was just one mixup, switching Clay Aiken and Santana.

I've posted my big, long, intricate opinion about AT40 here.Talking with a staff member, the changes to AT40 are beyond the staff's control. All the decisions that were made were by upper-management. The show's staff has tried to fight the changes off, but there is little that can be done about it.

The show's staff has tried to fight the changes off, but there is little that can be done about it. It may take some time, but if enough people contact the AT 40 website, and their radio stations, and if the ratings drop off drastically, they may change things back, somewhat at least, to the old style, etc. It's traumatic enough that Casey has left the show, and for them to do all this is unconscionable.

But THE BOTTOM LINE is, one week on the job and already he's as bad as Rick Dees. It's official. This is the end for decent Top 40 countdowns. Well I've actually found a decent "pop countdown" alternative to the "American Top 40," and "Rick Dees' Weekly Top 40" countdown that is from a member right here on these boards. HamJerzee's countdown "Soundcheck Top 40" on his radio station "Weekly Hit 40 Radio" is the epitome of how a pop countdown show should be done, IMO. www.weeklyhit40.tk/He has an excellent radio voice, I absolutely love his style. The show is wonderful. I've listened to it this weekend and have quickly adopted his show as my official pop countdown show that I'll actually take the time to listen to on a weekly basis. Of course there is also AT20 with my role model Casey Kasem for the Hot AC countdown. I will listen to that as much as possible as well. I'm glad that Casey is still around doing his thing.

What am I doing wrong. I am getting this message when I tried to listen, or is it on only at a designated time? Unfortunately, there weren't any SHOUTcast streams found containing the term Weekly Hit 40.

Unfortunately, there weren't any SHOUTcast streams found containing the term Weekly Hit 40. It's only on at specific times. The weekly countdown is on Friday evenings (check HamJerzee's topics in The Lounge for more info).

Thanks for that info.
And now here is my Tribute To Casey Kasem
On American Top 40, I'm Ryan Seacrest. And now we're up to our long distance dedication. It comes to us from a teacher in Miami named Richard, and here's what Richard writes: Dear Ryan. I would like to remember someone who was a big part of my life until a couple of weeks ago. In a way, he was a teacher, too. He had fascinating information about songs, artists, and all kinds of things, like the origin of Mother's Day, for example. His name is Casey Kasem, and I want him to know that I and a lot of other people miss hearing him every week on the radio. So, Ryan, could you please play "Thank You" by Dido, and let Casey know just how much we appreciated him. Even more so in retrospect. Sincerely, Richard.
Richard...
What's a long distance dedication? And now... on with the "survey".

Ryan has no say over the changes as well. A few people are quick to point fingers at Ryan, but Ryan is just the host reading off of a script.
