I honestly don't mind the chart at all.

I do mind that they aren't using the official Pop chart, but really, the positions are in a good distance.

Hopefully more stations will pick up AT40 and then we'll be closer to the official CHR/Pop chart. ;)

Why is the chart getting worse? 2 songs debuted and 2 oldies dropped off.

At least Ryan matched up the movements to last week's chart positions (unlike another countdown host this weekend).

A couple of points strike me….

From a program director’s point of view, wouldn’t it be better to play an old recurrent song that tested song well than having to air MercyMe “I Can Only Imagine” or Kiley Dean’s “Who Will You Run To?” which both tested poorly in their market? Thus, AT40 may be making the right moves in that direction. As mentioned here, the downside is the high burn factor of old songs.

On the other hand, why even air the show. The chart used is not a national chart from a trade magazine and your listeners don’t even vote on the songs. Plus, Seacrest uses a lot of cross promotion of his TV shows which only helps him and if the listeners really like Seacrest, they probably buy an XM radio and stop listening to your station.

The only thing for a station is one segment of checking in. Seacrest is a known brand name, but he’s overexposed with a high burn factor. Just like Clay Aiken, either you like him or hate which makes risky programming.

Wouldn’t this airtime be better spent on promoting your own station’s morning show with a local countdown of the Top 30, 35, 40 or whatever? You could recycle the BEST WEEK EVER at your station add some jingles for song numbers and use bits from the morning show and you’re set without a lot of production time. Air the show Saturday & Sunday mornings making seven days of your morning “great” morning show.

If you want a national host, just go with Carlson Daly on a weekday basis. After all, his countdown is based on local calls only with no surprises of songs you don’t want played. Plus, it only eats up 1 hour of programming. The evening DJ could do production for the local countdown during this time solving all problems.
