Sorry to make so many posts about this lol, but I'm really excited about this new format - KWJZ/Seattle just flipped to Alternative-based Modern AC today, and I'm really hoping it might be the next big new format Instead of centering their playlist around bands that are 10-15 years old, they're playing a new, 2010-based Modern AC playlist that's current-heavy, and centered around bands like Cage The Elephant, Mumford & Sons, Florence & The Machine, Black Keys, Neon Trees, Broken Bells, Temper Trap, My Chemical Romance, 30 Seconds To Mars, etc. There are other Modern ACs out there now, but unlike this new station in Seattle, they're either 90s-based or borderline AAA stations, and most only play one or two currents an hour I'm just wondering if you guys think this new Alternative/Modern AC format will succeed - I think it could be the next big thing in radio Here's a link to their stream... radiotime.com/station/s_26280/Click_989_FM.aspx

Seems like they play a song at one minute, then a half-hour later, they play it again.

Oh I hope so. My local Hot AC has gotten so awful.
I wish Hot AC stations could emulate The Pulse on Sirius.

I wish Hot AC stations could emulate The Pulse on Sirius. Agreed! The Pulse is a pretty good station. My local Hot AC has progressively gotten worse. They're adding in more and more CHR junk, which I guess is happening overall at HAC (Enrique, Usher, Taio Cruz, etc), along with lots of older music. Yet they seem to refuse to play anything that has any sort of minor Rock sound.

Seems like they play a song at one minute, then a half-hour later, they play it again. I think that's just cause it's the first day and they want people to hear certain songs when they tune in - pretty sure a lot of new CHRs did that the first day they flipped

I bet they are going after KPLZ which like many other Hot AC's has become more CHR leaning. I hope this format takes off in Seattle.

This sounds a little bit like what Hot AC was headed for in the late 90's, but didn't quite reach. I'd listen to it.

Apparently this flipped from Smooth Jazz, and I'm all for it. I'm looking forward to having this station available to listen to whenever I'm in a car (which isn't extremely often, but still). However, they are getting absolutely pilloried on their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/Click989

Yeah lol I'm guessing that most people that know about the station right now are older adults that listened to Smooth Jazz, and they're pretty upset that their station disappeared

Hot AC as the format we used to know has disappeared too. That's why it's so nice to hear a station like this. Don't know why "Cooler Than Me" by Mike Posner is getting played here though. Not exactly a "Modern" AC hit. That song sounds more rhythmic to me! Otherwise I am hearing some great music from the last ten years and a lot of current music that hasn't been played in Chicago for a long time or has not been added as of yet. Keep up the great work!

Love the idea of this format, but KWJZ/Seattle just flipped :'( . Anyway, I'm looking at their playlist, and don't like what I see. It looks like generic Hot AC currents meets generic Alt. currents. Radio's current game, I guess, is to still play the most overplayed songs but see how many ways you can rearrange them. They didn't need to blow up a heritage Smooth Jazz for this.

' I will say this though. Since I don't normally listen to Alternative radio, some of those currents are unfamiliar to me. Therefore, to me this station sounds fresh. And at least they don't play the harder edged alternative stuff that would really turn me off. Agreed about ditching the Smooth Jazz format though. Not that I was ever a fan of that format, but apparently there are many very upset fans of the old station that have been posting some pretty nasty posts on Facebook and Allaccess.com. They blew up a Smooth Jazz station here in Chicago a couple of years ago for yet another Spanish AC station (there already existed about three of those here). Needless to say the ratings of that new Spanish station tanked in comparison to the old Smooth Jazz station. So the jury will still be out on how this new station in Seattle looks ratings wise. But for now I do like this new Modern AC sound as most Hot AC's around the country long abandoned this sound years ago.

Yeah, I listen to Alternative, but our station really doesn't spin currents excessively, so hearing MGMT/Kids, Broken Bells/The High Road, Black Keys/Tighten Up, Phoenix/Lisztomania, Mumford & Sons/Little Lion Man, Linkin Park/Waiting For The End, etc. still sounds "cutting-edge" to me Also, I really think Owl City, The Script, and Metro Station sound much better mixed with Indie/Alternative than they do mixed with Rihanna and Usher - so for me the sound of the station really makes sense I guess

I was just thinking about Modern AC recently after noticing Hot AC is looking more and more like pop these days. Isn't this station similar to what Modern AC was 10 years ago or so? I remember when R&R had a Modern AC chart then discontinued it because it was too similar to Hot AC back then. Haven't checked out this station but it sounds like one I would listen to. Either that or a AAA station with more currents like 100.5 the peak in Vancouver. www.thepeak.fm/pages/now-playing

Thanks for posting their playlist atlantaboy. I was going to post it and call it "the Click 98.9 Top 40 of 2010!" I love the music, but I don't like the excessive CHR-like rotation. I hope that's just for the rollout of their station and they reduce the rotations once they start playing commericals and adding personalities. Otherwise they could end up running that station right into the ground. I will say this though that playing these songs a lot familiarizes listeners, including myself, with some of these artists, so that's a plus for playing these songs so often, at least for now. I would hope they start actually reporting to the Hot AC panel soon. Had they been, "Dog Days Are Over" probably would have come close to breaking into the Mediabase top 20. Instead it takes a backwards bullet down from #23 to #24 this week. A couple of their powers have now debuted or will debut on the Rick Dees Hot AC chart. "Waiting For The End" by Linkin Park debuted at #32 this week, while "Little Lion Man" by Mumford & Sons is this week's Sure Shot. I would also expect DDAO to debut or at least hit Sure Shot status next week due to it's high ranking on Mediabase.

They should be playing Cee Lo - "Fuck You", Muse - "Undisclosed Desires", Cage The Elephant - "Shake Me Down", and Hedley - "Perfect" among other things.

Looks like 96X in Norfolk VA is joining the bandwagon - it's still reporting as Alternative, but it's basically the same deal as Click 98.9/Seattle They stream online at www.96x.fm

This sounds similar to a format idea I had. It'd consist of 80's new wave/alternative, mixed with current indie/alternative music. No overplayed 90's golds. Artists like Justice, La Roux and Hot Chip would be also thrown in to give it a modern dance feel. It'd probably tank. But I'd listen to it.

This is what I want Fresh 102.7 in New York to sound like. Listening to it every day at work for the past couple weeks, it's pretty good, but it's more or less a clone of WPLJ with the non-Bon Jovi 80's songs jettisoned. Taking on a format like this would be a nice way to differentiate themselves. Plus, somebody's gotta step up to the plate and play some current alternative music around here. If this is the only way it could be played, I'd gladly sign up for it.

I know that Fresh 102.7 added The Black Keys/Lonely Boy, probably cause there's no Alternative or commericial AAA station in New York City to play it BTW it's weird how both Fresh AC stations (New York and Washington DC) started out really conservative, and now both stations, especially the one in DC, are much more progressive than the regular Hot AC
