Spotlight: Girl Songs

HOUR 1

°10. What About Now - Daughtry: debut

°(#1 POP This Week in 1990) Downtown Train - Rod Stewart; has a replica of the New York Central Railroad at his home in California.

°(Spotlight from 1984) Girls Just Want to Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper

°09. Crush - David Archuleta: holding

°(From 2003) White Flag - Dido; promoted her new album "Safe Trip Home" with a photo contest. Fans sent in their best travel photos. Winner received an autographed copy of the album.

°(Spotlight from 1969) Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison; song was originally called "Brown Skinned Girl".

°(From 2000) That's the Way It Is - Céline Dion; song spent 14 weeks at #2.

°(From 1995) Hold My Hand - Hootie & the Blowfish

°08. Whatever It Takes - Lifehouse: reenters after a 5 week absence; Jason Wade says, "They (their church) were trying to get some attention for their youth group, and they thought a ROCK band would bring people in. We'd play, then we'd pray." They went from leading a service for 17, to a service for thousands.

°(Spotlight from 1978) Use ta Be My Girl - The O'Jays

°07. Realize - Colbie Caillat: up 3

°(From 2006) Lonely No More - Rob Thomas; says he will finish his second solo album this year & also release a new Matchbox Twenty album.

HOUR 2

°(#1 POP This Week in 1971) My Sweet Lord - George Harrison; song hit #1 in the U.K. in 1971 and again in 2002 after his death.

°06. I'm Yours - Jason Mraz: down 5; biggest dropper from the top since the Dixie Chicks' "Landslide" in 2003. "I'm always challenging myself to tell stories in a different way. Sometimes I use too many words, so many words that my songs are 10 minutes long or longer. It's hard work simplifying a song. When it works, it could be so good."

°(Spotlight from 1981) Jessie's Girl - Rick Springfield; song is based on his own experience, though he changed his friend's name for the song.

°(#1 This Week in 1999) From This Moment On - Shania Twain; her original dream was to become a backup singer to Dolly Parton. She has since sold over 65mil albums worldwide.

°05. Love Song - Sara Bareilles: holding for 3rd week & 42nd week in the top-10

°(Spotlight from 1983) Uptown Girl - Billy Joel; "When I started to write the song, I was a divorced Rock Star & I had all these women wanting to go out with me. So it was originally called "Uptown Girls", not "Girl".

°(#1 POP This Week in 2007) Irreplaceable - Beyoncé; "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" is the current #1 on the Urban Chart. She says she would love to play "Wonder Woman" in a movie. "It's a very bold choice. A black "Wonder Woman" would be a powerful thing, and I think it's time for that."

#1's on the Other Charts
POP - Womanizer - Britney Spears
Digital Downland - Just Dance - Lady GaGa featuring Colby O'Donis
Country - Already Gone - Sugarland

°04. Bleeding Love - Leona Lewis: up 2; song has been downloaded over 1mil times.

°(From 2009) Trains and Winter Rains - Enya; "I felt that time was my enemy. The record company was always asking when the next album will be ready. So, I had them change my contract so there was no set time between albums. If an album takes 5 years, it takes 5 years. If it's not right, it can't be rushed. I recorded songs when my voice is over dubbed dozens, even hundreds of times. It takes a long time in the studio, and it will be impossible to duplicate it in a concert. I thought about touring someday, but when I look at how to do it. Well, it can't be done."

°(Spotlight from 1979) Bad Girls - Donna Summer; although she co-wrote it, she thought the content of the song was more suited for Cher.

°(#1 This Week in 1984) I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues - Elton John

°(From 1996) Breakfast at Tiffany's - Deep Blue Something

HOUR 3

°(#1 POP This Week in 1989) Two Hearts - Phil Collins; there were 2 videos for the song. One had him as all 4 members of a band. The other video had him in a wrestling match.

°(LDD) Come Away with Me - Norah Jones

Dear Casey,

Two Thousand Five was a very difficult time for me. I was living in Nevada, my marriage was failing, and I was alone. I felt as if nothing would ever be right again. Well, I'm glad to say that I was wrong. That's when I met Dan. He was my best friend's brother who was visiting from LA. We both knew there was something there, but of course, the timing wasn't right & Dan didn't want to get in the way of my marriage. A year later when my husband and I separated, I got an email from Dan. It was like a light bulb turning on. He flew in to visit his sister, and we all went out together. The rest is history. Since then, we haven't been apart for more than a few days. We're now married and have a beautiful 12 month-old daughter. He and my daughter are my everything. I'd like to dedicate Norah Jones' "Come Away with Me" to my husband Dan. From the first moment I met him, I knew he was the only one for me. Life has a funny way of knowing just what you need.

Thank you so much,
Emily

°03. Pocketful of Sunshine - Natasha Bedingfield: up 1

°(Spotlight from 1986) West End Girls - Pet Shop Boys; song talks about London's East (working class) & West (cosmopolitan) End.

°(#1 POP This Week in 1983) Down Under - Men at Work

°(From 1980) Hit Me with Your Best Shot - Pat Benatar; writer Eddie Schwartz's inspiration was his therapy sessions that consisted of punching pillows. He recorded a demo, but a major label said the song was pathetic.

°(Spotlight from 2008) Big Girls Don't Cry - Fergie; song was also #1 This week in 2008. The Four Seasons also hit #1 with this song title.

°02. Viva la Vida - Coldplay: up 1

°(Spotlight from 1965) My Girl - The Temptations; song also charted in 1992 because of the movie "My Girl". Writer Smokey Robinson's inspiration for the song was his wife Claudette.

°(From 1973) Your Mama Don't Dance - Loggins and Messina

°(Spotlight from 1985) Material Girl - Madonna; other #1 "girl" songs: "Oh Girl", "Island Girl", "Rich Girl", and "Hollaback Girl".

°01. The Time of My Life - David Cook: up 1 & 14th week at #1; has the most fun remaking songs such as The Beatles's "Eleanor Rigby", Duran Duran's "Hungry Like the Wolf", and The Turtles' "Happy Together".

Nice to hear the new Enya song. As usual, Mike did a wonderful job guest hosting. Loved the "biggest drop from #1 since the Dixe Chicks" stat.

I forgot to mention that while introducing "Your Mama Don't Dance," Mike said it came out the same year he was born, 1973.
