The appeal to kids seems obvious--at least to me. "Whoa oh oh oh" is not a grownup lyric. The song's pitch is prepubescent--straining David's voice unnaturally. David's live performance of the song found the perfect audience Sunday--kids--and they responded accordingly.

Perez Hilton recently called SBL "cute." That's pretty much how David's perceived, along with his music--as Jive's very own Justin Bieber--a harmless object of adoration for tween girls. He's been deliberately avoiding more adult themes, emphasizing instead how the new album will reveal what makes him tick personally--as if all his fans were eager to know this. But older fans don't particularly care about that. We're into his brilliant vocals; we want to hear interpretations that resonate with grownup interests and take full advantage of his talent--songs like Crazy, No Air, Contigo. He runs the risk of losing these older fans--which had been a great part of his fan base.

Do you think he's virgin? Why doesn't he market himself as the male Britney Spears?

Praepos - While no one wants David to lose any fans I think most are just eagerly awaiting the new music and just watching his journey as he progresses in his music career. Even though we may disagree with some of his choices, they are just that -- HIS choices. I for one just want to hear music from David, whether it's "mature" enough or not. I don't want to over analyze things. David himself has said he enjoys the power music has to make people happy. Of course you can't please all the people all the time. I think he's just trying to be true to himself which is commendable. This is one album and I have no doubt that there will be many more to come so just enjoy it.

Paola, I accept his sexual inexperience as a given. He's a devout Mormon kid after all. But I don't accept that he lacks awareness of grownup issues. Just the contrary. The present teen pop marketing ploy is an avoidance of that. He's supposedly this happy-go-lucky kid, all bounce and smiles. That belies the biographic evidence as well as his mature talent. I don't buy it.

That can't be a good thing for those who believe he's letting his great talent go to waste. Not that I don't admire David as a person. But he's not interesting as a singer--not with these songs.

You are obviously entitled to your opinion and to not buy the album but is he not allowed to experiment and explore what suits him musically? I mean this is most likely the first time he's ever had this much control over his career and life so of course he's going to be excited to use this new freedom -- as anyone would. I think his growth as an artist is intertwined with his growth as a person and that to me IS interesting. He has time to grow but it seems to me that this album is as much about David making his own decisions and expressing who he is right now as it is about the music, although I do like the music I've heard so far. But then don' t we all go through this growing up process? The difference is we don' t have the world watching. I certainly don't believe David's talent is being wasted.

Sure he can experiment. What you say is true. He needs time to get his act together--and that means he needs to fail before he sees his way through to the next level. I don't disagree with that. But it's still a waste of his potential if he's not utilizing his vocal strengths. There's no need to condone that. He needs to know if some fans are losing interest.

and that means he needs to fail before he sees his way through to the next level. I don't think failing is a good strategic move for David. lol This album is a make-it-or-break-it deal. If it fails, we're going to see David doing Danny Zuko in a touring production of Grease. He needs this to sell units, and he needs to tour a little bit and reach the fans.

His situation is not that dire because he's got greater than average talent and his label knows this. It's not going to drop him. He has time to develop and make mistakes. Older fans who lose interest today can have it rekindled tomorrow with the right material and promotion. And his younger fans will stick with him no matter what.

I haven't been in thread in ages. Now I remember why. I thought it was because still another single you loved isn't doing that great. It was supposed to be the perfect summer hit for radio. Summer's almost over.

The only therapy he needs is a better marketing strategy and some grownup material.

Aww give him a break. In a recent interview he said he recorded 50 songs in working for this album though some were just trying things out. I doubt Jive/Fenster let David pick his singles or even what is on the album. I am looking forward to the album and what tracks people buy will speak for itself. This is nice - Forbes Network Driven video interview/about David David Archuleta Moves Beyond American Idol (mentions new album) bit.ly/9Fkuw4

My b*tching at Jive, Sony and Azoff over David's official site having "No current events" may have worked. His official site now has events listed in the Events section. Now maybe someday they'll fix his MySpace bio to go beyond "first album soon". That same old bio ended up in Playbill last summer too. ----- David is at the Christmas show rehearsal today. I wonder what's he'll sing. ------ Archuleta fans Stand Up To Cancer donation team "Crush Kids Cancer" seems to have won the Stand Up to Cancer donation challenge. Part of this is thanks to Dave Filice who offered a contests for 1/2 hour music lesson, his Santa hat and his Archuleta crew shirt, open to those who donated $50 (or $100 for the shirt). ------ New song listed at ASCAP w/ David as a writer - Up in the Air by David, Toby Gad, Lindy Robbins. Sorry it's a photo from FOD - I am having trouble finding it with ACE search.

LOL interesting thread.
Regardless of the more control he might have this time I doubt he's really the one making the choice of going this pop way. That's the label because they want the radio hits. I doubt he'd pick a single like this to represent him, at least judge by what I see of him. It's a single that fits what people listen to these days, but not a single that does anything for him and that is even interesting enough. As for not doing that well, obviously no one's in a rush to pick it, but it doesn't mean it won't do better later. I know most of the push happens behind the scenes and I have read that even before the adds date the stations had the single so obviously Jive has been pushing and he's doing the radio promo, but I still think he could have been on z100 like last time. It's only one radio station, but if they're into it they'll play it and others would follow. I think it's time Jive tries that market.

Love, love, love the sound of this song! I know it's just a snippet but...wow. Makes me even more anxious to hear the album.

Yeah I like it too! When you forget me And you don't remember my name Not even your/a? memory Somewhere in the back of your brain Ahhh :) --- David's in the first of two takes of the Christmas taping and just did Silent Night duet with Orla Fallon and they got standing ovation. Now D's doing Pat-a-pan with Orla backup. Now Melodies of Christmas. JOHN_AF said D got standing ovations after all three. And this is cool - no video but great audio for a twitvid - last number David was in - group number - this is great. www.twitvid.com/YULKI

Has the track listing been confirmed? I don't think it has. I'd love to see Not A Very Good Liar on there.
