Helena Paparizou - "My Number One"

Greece with Elena's "My Number One" was the winner of the Eurovision Contest after last night's show...(The show is something like "The American Idol" in Europe)

Followed the "Greek Chick" (Anna Vissi

, Despina Vandi) invasion in the US market, the song will be released in america by Sony International soon.
The song grows on you and hopefully we will get some good mixes!

No, it's nothing like American Idol. In Idol they search for new talents to make them famous.

Eurovision is a contest where European countries send out an artist to win. Almost all of the performers are already known in their countries.

Abba won with Waterloo, Celine Dion won with Schweiz, Helena is already big and comes from the band "Antique" who originally did the song "Opa Opa", later covered by Despina. t.A.T.u competed after their big breakthrough.

So how is this like American Idol?

The contest does work in many ways like the American Idol.

You are right, some of the singers (not all of them) are well known in their home country but the show gives them a chance for a bigger career in Europe and not only.
Abba, Celin Dion,Bucks Fizz are some of the names that became very popular all over the world,after winning the ESC.

Here is how the competition works...
Each country organize their own show to choose the song for the competition...they usually let people choose their favorite with the televoting system.
Then,they all meet sometime in May at the country of last year's winner.
A semi-final takes place, Thursday before the final, because there are so many countries competing.The first 10 songs of the semi,qualified for the final where they meet the "big 4" (UK,France,Spain,Germany) and the best 10 from last year.
"Big 4" is a group of countries that won the competition more than 4 times.
Total 24 songs compete and people from all over Europe vote for their favorite.
Votes are separate for each country and they cast votes for their favorite 9 songs...
10th-1pt
9th-2pts
8th-3pts
7th-4pts
6th-5pts
5th-6pts
4th-7pts
3rd-8pts
2nd-10pts
1st- 12pts

They cast each countries votes (live) at the end of the show and the song with the most votes is the big winner.

PS:"Antique" is not the first group that sang "opa opa".The song is a classic from the 60s.You will hear many versions of it on deferent Greek cd's.

I like this song. Its got a nice melody and her voice is pretty strong. I wonder if this will be the next Greek sensation to take over the US club scene.

i have Valentino's Epic Mix (3:54) and Chris The Greek Panaghi Mix (3:32)
and DJ Elkana Paz NYH Club Remix is also another very good unofficial mix

Yes, the Valentino, Chris Panaghi, and Elias Pantazopoulos mixes were released to DJs in Europe last year.

Eurivision being compared to American Idol?

Eurovision is broadcast practically everywhere and has like 500 - 600 million viewers a year...All the competetors are superstars in their country, most of the time...And its been on since the 1950's - American Idol has been on for five years.

Totally.

And some of the singers who appeared in Eurovision, but didn't win still went on to be quite successful. Ofra Haza and Anna Vissi are just two of those singers. And Kate Ryan was already pretty famous in clubland. There's many more too.
