"Just Dance" took awhile to hit the number 1 spot & "Poker face" entered at 92, so yeah I was validating why she doesn't have a #1 debut Seriously? I said Gaga as popular as she is hasn't even debuted at #1. I was using that to show how popular Kesha is. That isn't the best argument as to "how popular Kesha is" though. Tons of artists who were WAY more popular didn't have singles debut at number 1. Nsync and Britney were more popular in the late 90s/early 2000s than Kesha is now, and they didn't have number 1 debuts. Doesn't mean Kesha is more popular. Digital sales, timing, release date, and a bunch of other things determine how a song debuts.

Since when did being an American Idol contestant invalidate your #1 debut because of the number of viewers the show gets? That is really the most nonsensical logic I've ever heard.

Ugh @ Ke$ha. I just don't get it.
I feel like we've had a pretty good run of #1s this year, until now.
Too bad Far East Movement couldn't hold on to some stronger sales.

I'm not invalidating their #1 debut because of course it's still a #1 debut, just saying PERSONALLY I don't use those as examples when referencing #1 debuts

All of the songs listed debuted #1 fair and square. Why should certain #1s not be referenced because of how many people saw them perform it, irrelevant. A #1 debut is a #1 debut whether or not you think it made the same impact as the other #1s is up to you though

From billboard.biz:
Taylor Swift: In addition to her impressive start at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with "Speak Now," Swift debuts 10 tracks from that album onto the Hot 100, led by "Sparks Fly" at No. 17. With her "Mine" falling 13-21, the singer has a total of 11 titles on the list, the most ever by a female artist. Only the Beatles (one week with 14 and two weeks with 12 in April 1964) have placed more songs simultaneously. David Cook also tallied 11 titles (all debuts) on the June 7, 2008, chart, following his "American Idol" coronation.
Counting "Speak Now's" three charting early-release digital singles ("Speak Now," "Back to December" and "Mean"), every track from the 14-song standard edition of "Speak Now" has appeared on the Hot 100.
Meanwhile, "Mean," which debuted at No. 11 last week with 163,000 downloads, falls off the chart, a victim of iTunes' Complete My Album scheme. The early-release singles from "Speak Now" are counted as returns when consumers opt to upgrade to a full album purchase. So it's normal to see such songs drop like a rock during the album's release week, as customers exchange their tracks for an album."
& "Speak Now" sold more than Nos. 2-62 combined on the chart this week and accounted for one out of every six albums sold in the United States last week.

So if one "completes an album", previous single track purchases from that album are DEDUCTED from that single track's digital tracks tally?? I had no idea about this.

I think debuting at #1 is a little overrated. It's all about luck and timing if you think about it. Congrats to Ke$ha though, big opening week!

Taylor Swift watch: 17 (XX) Sparks Fly 21 (13) Mine 27 (XX) Innocent 41 (XX) The Story Of Us 54 (XX) Dear John 56 (XX) Better Than Revenge 63 (XX) Haunted 71 (XX) Last Kiss 75 (XX) Enchanted 84 (XX) Never Grow Up 85 (XX) Long Live
Counting the previoulsy released album tracks (Back to December, Mean and Speak Now), every track on the album has now charted on the Hot 100. Meanwhile "Mean" falls from # 11 to off the chart completely, which I think ties Jonas Brothers' record for biggest drop off the chart.
Also, OMG falls off making Airplanes the new longest chart sitter at 29 weeks.

It's a big scam, but those are the rules.

has Billboard commented on the "Complete My Album" thing before? So, it has been that way since iTunes has had that in place? I guess singles that managed to see sales gains in the week their album was released were fortunate exceptions?

Mean debuted on #11 last week and falls off the chart this week. it's the highest-charting song to fall completely off the Hot 100 in one week. the record was The Moody Blues' "Nights In White Satin", which had been at #17 in 1972.

I guess singles that managed to see sales gains in the week their album was released were fortunate exceptions? It would be interesting to see how many people who buy those singles actually go back and complete the album. I imagine a lot of people download the single from Itunes but then might be inclined to buy the physical copy of the album when it comes out instead of completing the album on Itunes. You also have to consider that even with "returns," exposure for artists and their singles will typically be highest on their album release week, meaning yes even with the returns there probably is an increase in sales. But that's just speculation. None of us really knows.

In your example, a song ends up getting purchased twice - once as a single, and once as a component of an album. With "complete my album," the song is only puchased once, and is deducted from the cost of the album when you complete it.

Billboard.biz:
The Billboard Hot 100:
-- Ke$ha: As mentioned earlier this week, Ke$ha debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "We R Who W R," lifted by first-week download sales of 288,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's her fifth consecutive top 10 (sixth if you count her featured role on 3OH!3's "My First Kiss"). The track is the preview single from her forthcoming "Cannibal" album, set to be released on its own Nov. 22, in addition to being packaged with her debut album, "Animal," in a deluxe edition titled "Animal Cannibal."
-- Taylor Swift: In addition to her impressive start at No. The early-release singles from "Speak Now" are counted as returns when consumers opt to upgrade to a full album purchase. So it's normal to see such songs drop like a rock during the album's release week, as customers exchange their tracks for an album.
-- Willow Smith: The recently turned 10-year-old just misses the top 10 as "Whip My Hair" snaps 78-11, shifting 137,000 downloads. The sum brings the song onto Hot Digital Songs at No. 4.
-- Kanye West: His "Monster," featuring Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Bon Iver & Nicki Minaj, entered the Hot 100 and Hot Digital Songs last week from sales accrued in a single day. Now with a proper full-week haul, the song rockets 79-18 on the Hot 100 and 69-10 on Digital Songs with the top gain, up 78,000 units to 97,000.
-- Rihanna: The singer's "What's My Name" (featuring Drake) jumps 83-60 with Airplay Gainer honors. Without a digital single contributing to its ranking, the single becomes the lowest-ranked Airplay Gainer winner since Aug. 30, 2008, when T.I.'s "Whatever You Like" took home the prize at No. 71 -- a week prior to its digital release. On the following chart, T.I.'s track soared 71-1. Rihanna should make her own top 10 leap next week as her single hit digital retailers on Nov. 2.
-- "Glee" Cast: The act's 89th chart entry, "Time Warp," appropriately debuts at No. 89. It is the only debut from the "Rocky Horror" episode to chart. It's only the fourth week that the troupe has placed a single entry onto the chart, compared to 22 earlier multiple-debut weeks.

I am unpleased. Story of Us was one away from T40. So Speak Now ties Fearless for number of T40's upon album release (6). If only Sean or Airplanes fell a bit more, or people like freaking Chris Brown didn't ruin things.

Wow Memories moved up again... and still no sign of it on the itunes 100, while Lifehouse's "All In" which is just behind Memories in airplay is way outside the Hot 100, on the bubbling under chart at 11. I still don't get the big gap in between both songs when they are literally within 2 points of each other in airplay.

Can't believe this has been on the Bubbling under. Such a fantastic song. Just didnt realize it was so close to the Hot 100.
47 49 9 No Love, Eminem Featuring Lil Wayne
Yeah. Not shocking that's only up two places. Seriously Em can give it a couple more weeks but if it doesnt go up much he should really put out another single. He won't though. He really doesnt care about this type of thing.

ya, em doesn't really care, as long as his fans appreciate his music, which we do....
but couldn't they have released either, Talkin' to myself or Space Bound, just to keep album sales up.
