NICKI RELOADED AT #1
Rascal Flatts, Marvin Sapp and Of Monsters & Men Debut
April 4, 2012
The N.Y. Times just called her the pre-eminent female rapper of all time. And while that doesn’t say much—though supporters of Lil’ Kim, MC Lyte, Foxy Brown and Missy Elliott might disagree—Nicki Minaj’s sophomore Young Money/Cash Money/ Universal Republic album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, will debut at #1 next week, with between 200-225k in sales. That’s based on one-day reports from our crack network of online retailers and those selling CDs from the back of their car trunks.
Big Machine country stalwarts Rascal Flatts’ Changed is on target for sales between 100-125k The band’s last album, 2010’s Nothing Like This, racked up 160k in first-week numbers on the way to 1.1 million total.
Verity gospel star Marvin Sapp’s I Win looks to be in the 45-50k range. His last album, 2010’s Here I Am, peaked at #2 on the sales chart.
Universal Republic’s latest discovery, Of Monsters & Men, dubbed “the Icelandic Mumford & Sons,” will earn a very nifty 40-45k for its debut, My Head is an Animal, and its PoMo/Triple A comer, “Little Talks,” spinning at influential L.A. station KROQ, among others, with one million plays on VEVO. The band will play KROQ’s 20th annual Weenie Roast Y Fiesta at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, CA, May 5.
Album sales were up 13% vs. last week, down 7% vs. same week last year and flat year to date.
Track sales were up 4% vs. last week, up 9% vs. same week last year and up 7% year to date.
TEA sales were up 10% vs. last week, down 3% vs. same week last year and up 2% year to date.
NARM boss Jim Donio was upbeat: “Overall album sales and track volume remain in the plus column compared to 2011, with track equivalent album sales up by 2%.”

Less than half of what the label was expecting? Ouch.

We can finally move on from last week. lol
I hope Nicki does great, at least in the longer-term just so my bf can stop teasing me about how her career is over and she'll never be successful again. :(

Now that she's a popstar she'll have to deal with selling like one.

I'm not surprised in the least considering she has been facing some backlash from her Urban following. She's become a totally different artist since her mix tape days. She balanced it with her pop side well on Pink Friday but she moved way too far from rap with this album. I think it could hurt her in the long-run.

Gasp!
That number is not good for Nicki.
Her last album sold 375k.
I was expecting 400k+
Question:
HITS is usually very close with their first week estimations.
Do you think that the majority of album sales happen on Tuesday?
I always thought Saturday and Sunday were big days for album sales since that is when most people have off.
If that was true, HITS' estimations would miss more than they hit. HITS always seems to be on target.

Woah. Wasn't expecting that low. I thought she'd pass Madonna's numbers for sure. Guess she is losing a lot of fanbase.

That combined with the messy single releases and the fact Starships hasn't really exploded yet make this number understandable. It's not low by any means, but she could be doing much better and I'm sure her people are aware of that. She needs to change course.

It's probally cause of the sudden annoucement of PF:RR. You would've thought she would have waited till Summer-Fall of this year with a new album, but hey, here's to another #1.
There is enough hits on PF:RR, just like PF, to keep the album afloat.

Now that she's a popstar she'll have to deal with selling like one. Haha. Accurately put. I love Nicki but I'm actually not surprised at these numbers. Starships is a catchy song and I enjoy it, but it's a little anemic by her standards. No bite to it. And it's sorta cannibalized her other singles.

She put way to many pop songs on it. Urban won't buy because of the pop overload, and Pop won't buy because of the urban overload... Shame.

I guess I expected more because of the insane hype from her label and her and everyone else who acted like 400-500K was a done deal. However, she is doing about the same as or more than typical Katy/Kesha/Rihanna numbers so it isn't a complete disaster. I guess she is truly a pop star now and selling pop star numbers!

Yikes! I expected her to scan 400k+ easily.

Wow. I hope (if the album continues to disappoint), she goes straight back to the urban-based sound she became famous for.
Outstanding numbers for Of Monsters & Men!

FLOP!
And no, that's not a joke.
This album needed to do at least 350k to not flop and (if we are going to compare her to anyone) while Drake sold 630k first-week for his sophmore album, Nicki has clearly destroyed her base. It's her fault and hers alone, and, frankly, she deserves these weak numbers.
The "rap" side of this album is awful (it feels like she phoned it in while thinking, "Hey, these people are too dumb to realize that I'm making bland music because they love me sooo much they'll buy anything!") and the pop side, while boasting plenty of high-energy tracks, is basically just as unremarkable.
She is wasting her talent and "selling out" with this new music. Lil Wayne and Drake both went with some left-field stuff ("How to Love" was just out of no where, and Drake's whole album is essentially R&B), but they pulled it off.
Here's to hoping this is a wake up call to her and her team.

I honestly thought the initial projections were way too high. She has a hit on her hands with Starships, but I haven't even heard it yet. Her Grammy performance was torn to shreds. The hype is over. She needs to prove herself beyond that now.

For those comparing to her debut sales, those were also during the Chrsitman Shoping sales period. I think Nicki's sales are fine and good....

I still think it was the timing. Only one "official" single that was just released not that long ago. There should have been two before this came out.
I mean be calm, it JUST came out.

Very disappointing for Nicki, I thought she was going to be the "it" girl of 2012 but with sales like this, no way. She will have to pull a Rihanna Good Girl Gone Bad or Katy Teenage Dream-type longevity to get to where Pink Friday is (2m).
However, while her move into pop has alienated her urban fanbase (who buy albums) and this is an undeniably BAD opening, she is bigger than ever interntionally. #1 album in the UK, #2 smash single, and a sold out tour there.
I think this will go platinum in America as she has many potential singles on the album (Roman Reloaded, Champion, Pound the Alarm, Young Forever, Va Va Voom - which should have been the lead! Starships is too europop and that killed her urban audience), but yeah, it's disappointing. She had tons of exposure but it was all bad...panned Grammy performance, panned lead (sorry, buzz) single + video ("Stupid Hoe"), mediocre American Idol performance that only catered to the pop fans....pop fans don't buy albums! Even Britney with her huge fanbase only sold 275k last year, Katy and Rihanna can't cross 200k. In fact I will not be surprised if Katy's next album sells only slightly above Teenage Dream on the first week. They appeal to people who simply do not buy albums.

Kinda underwhelming.
She has the hits on the album for longevity though...

Expected a higher number for Minaj's projection. Hopefully it ends up closer to 225K.
Also not-so-impressive numbers for Flatts.

I think a big problem is many people didn't know her album was released this week. I remember knowing exactly when Pink Friday would be released nearly 1.5 months in advance and was counting down the days because I knew the debut would be big. I had no idea her album came out yesterday until I saw it on iTunes.

I also thought Minaj's album was missleading. Up intill this week, i thought it was a re release. Having reloaded in the name really helps with that thought process...

I thought that, too, but that was some months ago, before I read that it was a brand-new album.

Decent #'s for Nicki, not smashing figures by any means, but good nonetheless. The album has a mass single selection, and with the right selection, this album could easily have legs and sell big overall.
First, lets start by releasing the damn video to Starships! That's a summer smash waiting to happen.

Don't know why some people are acting like Starships isn't already a big hit -- top 5 peak and has spent all 7 of its chart weeks in the top ten.
I think the lesson is pretty clearly pop/dance songs = high single sales, low album sales. Nicki's image has shifted much poppier.
The confusing album title is also not helping matters.
