Oh, I'm surprised. I'd also like to ask; what makes certifications so expensive?

I thought certifications were only a few hundred dollars.

It's a few hundred dollars. It's on their site, it's no secret information: www.riaa.com/goldandplatinum.php?content_selector=certificationCROSSING THE OCEAN: Frank Ocean’s Def Jam/IDJ album Channel Orange debuted at #2 on HITS’ Album sales chart last week, moving a total of 131k, all from iTunes. With the physical release last week—minus Target, in protest of the digital exclusive—the album is on track to sell over 50k this week. Soundscan’s total will subtract the 10,000 or so from Amazon, who are selling the release at $2.99, given its arbitrary rule that a release has to be out a minimum of four weeks before including any sales below $3.49. Of course, that was after SoundScan had already counted similar sales of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way (99 cents) and Madonna’s MDNA (given away with the price of a ticket). In order to deliver the most complete sales information, HITS will include all Amazon sales in its Frank Ocean chart total tomorrow to reflect IDJ’s aggressive digital and pricing policy in getting the critically acclaimed album out to as wide an audience as possible. (7/23p) Another 50 pages incoming...

I thought certifications were only a few hundred dollars. The charge for certifications is $350 for RIAA® member companies. Non-members are charged $450 per certification, which must be pre-paid. 10 new certifications are up at RIAA.com today. All digital singles... I'm impatiently waiting for: Rhianna 1xp One Direction 1xp Pitbull Gold Civil Wars Gold Madonna Gold John Mayer Gold Justin Bieber Gold Bruce Springsteen Gold Van Halen Gold (might not happen)

Is the 50k included w/the deductions? ??? HITS will count 50k. SoundScan will count 40k. We don't know how SS will deal with the "total" sales. Will they 40k or 50k?

They have to pay for both. Yes, today they have to pay for each certification. They can't "skip." But, in the past, labels were allowed to skip paying for certifications: Madonna's True Blue skipped from 5xp to 7xp. Madonna's The Immaculate Collection skipped from 6xp to 9xp. Abba's Gold skipped from 3xp to 6xp.

I tweeted The Civil Wars about getting their album certified Gold and they responded with:
"They've started the process and hopefully will be official soon! Thanks Chris."

So I would like to state for the record that my "Frank Ocean will climb in week 2" prediction is perhaps the worst I've ever made on this site.
You all can pelt me with tomatoes at your leisure.

Are Gold plaques really made of actual Gold? I always thought it was like a Gold colored coating.
Anyway $350 is very little for a major label to pay an agency to run an audit. I just don't think getting a 20 year old album re-certified from 7x to 8x Platinum seems like a major priority for record labels.

^Yes, they don't use real gold. An ounce of Gold now is worth $1,000 plus.
I just saw LA Reid present Karmin a Platinum digital single certification for "Broken Hearted" on GMA. The lead singer said she had chills.

Amazon Sale Price Will Negatively Impact Frank Ocean's Chart Position This Week July 24, 2012 | By Ed Christman and Andrew Hampp, New York Island Def Jam's surprise exclusive release of Frank Ocean's Channel Orange album for one week on iTunes is still angering other retailers. A week after Target refused to carry the album as a result of the digital exclusive, Amazon on July 16 started selling an MP3 version of the album for $2.99 -- a move reminding music buyers that if they see an iTunes exclusive, they should check Amazon's price before downloading from Apple.

Amazon's lowballing is the latest twist in the ongoing tug of war between labels and retailers to drive volume sales at the expense of pricing. But after all is said and done, the price wars could create more confusion among consumers. Christian Clancy, Ocean's manager and co-founder of 4 Strikes Management, says, "Frank gives us the opportunity to see some of the business practices that need to evolve."

One major-label sales executive put it more bluntly: "[Amazon is] punishing the artist and the label in a pretty sneaky and clever way. They are also definitely sending a message to other labels that giving iTunes an exclusive will have consequences."
Target Not Carrying Frank Ocean's 'Channel Orange' in Response to iTunes Exclusive, Not Ocean's Sexuality
The blowback for iTunes' preferential treatment is felt deeply on the Billboard charts. Billboard's revised policy, instituted after Lady Gaga's Born This Way was priced for 99 cents on Amazon to boost first-week sales, excludes sales of titles scanned for less than $3.49 within the first four weeks of release.

Sources say that the Amazon sale will generate about 15,000 album downloads at the Seattle-based merchant this week -- but those Amazon numbers will not count toward the album's position on this week's chart, released tomorrow (July 25).

Regarding the cost of certifications -- I'm fairly certain that the audit cost does not include a physical award -- those are likely ordered separately with a different fee (which makes sense, as in many cases they'll want multiples).

^Yes, I think you are right. Some labels probably don't even order a plaque.

59k - 15k = 44k. Looks like it'll only lower him 1 spot on Billboard. I'll call that negligible in the long run.

- Adele is hanging on! :) - Alright for Bruno doing 27k - Nicki, hun... I hope this 'PTA' + her new Urban single? can keep her around 10-12k - The gap between M5 & LP keeps getting bigger. LP may have won the battle, but it looks like M5 will win the war ;)

Having the #1 single at radio is really helping M5.

I gather that Phil Collins' album was deeply discounted somewhere? Yes, Amazon for 99 cents. another chart manipulation they shouldnt allow low priced albums into the upper reaches of the charts. i dont mind buying albums for 25cents but the charting should be restricted

I kind of like it because of the exposure it gives to older material
