No Trouble For Kelly's 'Double'

R. Kelly easily scores his sixth No. 1 album on The Billboard 200 as "Double Up" debuts with 386,000 units ... Jason Aldean nabs a top 10 debut on the big chart and a No. 1 entry on Top Country Albums with his second album, "Relentless" ... Experimental rock act Circa Survive scores its best week ever as its new album bows in the top 30 ... the release of DRM-free EMI albums in the Apple iTunes Store causes a number of titles to gain ... the 40th anniversary of the release of the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" stirs interest in the album.

FLASH POINTS

• R&B superstar R. Kelly lands his sixth No. 1 album on The Billboard 200 as "Double Up" debuts with 386,000. His last 10 studio albums (including sets with Public Announcement and Jay-Z) have all reached the top two. His last studio set, 2005's "TP.3 Reloaded," bowed at No. 1 with 491,000. His last four solo studio efforts ("TP3," "Happy People/U Saved Me," "Chocolate Factory" and "TP-2.com") all started north of 400,000 ... The new album was ushered in by the smash single "I'm a Flirt," which hit No. 2 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs in April. It's his biggest chart hit since "Step in the Name of Love" hit No. 1 in late 2003 ... R. Kelly has had a Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs entry every year since his debut in 1991 with "She's Got That Vibe" (with Public Announcement). In the course of his career on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, he has racked up 11 No. 1s as a performer and another 37 top 10s as a producer.

• Last week's chart-topper, Maroon 5's "It Won't Be Soon Before Long," slips to No. 2 with a 60% decline. In third place is Linkin Park's "Minutes to Midnight" with 126,000 and a 36% drop. No. 4 sees the arrival of indie country singer Jason Aldean and his "Relentless" album (98,000 units). The Broken Bow artist also starts at No. 1 on Top Country Albums -- his first chart-topper there. His 2005 self-titled debut peaked at No. 6 on the Country tally and at No. 37 on The Billboard 200. It's still on the charts, too. This week it climbs 113-87 on The Billboard 200 and 24-18 on Top Country Albums with a 22% increase. It spawned three Hot Country Songs hits -- "Hicktown" (No. 10), "Why" (No. 1) and "Amarillo Sky" (No. 4). His latest single, "Johnny Cash," is the lead cut from the new album. It rises 14-12 on the Country Songs tally this week. Aldean played "Good Morning America" today, which may help curb his inevitable slide next week ... In other country news, in its 32nd chart week, Taylor Swift's self-titled debut holds in the top 20 on The Billboard 200 for the fourth week in a row. She rebounded into the top 20 the week before her performance on the May 15 Academy of Country Music Awards show. On the broadcast, she memorably sang her hit single "Tim McGraw." Oddly, she had never previously met the title subject of the song, so it made for a great TV moment when she semi-serenaded McGraw and subsequently introduced herself, on-air, to the star. The cute Swift story continues, as she scored a slot as one of the opening artists on McGraw and Faith Hill's Soul2Soul summer tour. Swift will play seven dates in July.

• Back in the top 10 of The Billboard 200, Daughtry's self-titled album moves 6-5 (69,000; down 7%) while Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" scoots 11-6 with 50,000 sold, a new peak and its second biggest sales week so far (up 28%). Imagine that a good chunk of the increase this week is owed to the album's $7.99 sale pricing at Best Buy last week. Other titles on the chart that benefit from a $7.99 tag at the retailer include Lily Allen (65-52, up 12%), Papa Roach (114-68, up 41%), the Pussycat Dolls (121-70, up 43%), Rich Boy (104-79, up 24%), Jason Aldean (113-87, up 22%), Mika (112-104, up 6%) and Blue October (159-131, up 22%). Winehouse, who played the June 3 MTV Movie Awards, may experience an increase next week as well.

• U.S.D.A.'s "Cold Summer" slips 4-7 on The Billboard 200 (50,000; down 48%), Avril Lavigne's "The Best Damn Thing" climbs 9-8 (50,000; up 3%), Michael Buble's "Call Me Irresponsible" slides 7-9 (48,000; down 23%) while Ozzy Osbourne's "Black Rain" drizzles 3-10 in its second week (47,000; 69%). Carrie Underwood's "Some Hearts" continues its remarkable chart run, as it moves 8-11 in its 81st chart week. Since its debut in November 2005, it has never once left the top 40, nor sold less than 23,000 in a week.

• After we leave the top 10 on The Billboard 200, the debuts dry up until we hit No. 24 with the bow of Circa Survive's "On Letting Go" (24,000). The rock band's last album, "Juturna," spent one week on the chart in 2005 at No. 183. "On Letting Go" gives the act its best sales week, too. Next week's chart will perk up quite a bit, as it will greet the arrivals of new efforts from Paul McCartney, Rihanna, Daddy Yankee, T-Pain and Big & Rich, among others.

• Robin Thicke parlays a May 29 "Oprah Winfrey Show" performance into a whopping 137% increase (No. 12 with 45,000). India.Arie, who also played the same show, re-enters The Billboard 200 at No. 144 with "Testimony: Vol. 1" (up 505%) ... The release of DRM-free EMI downloads in the Apple iTunes Store helps push gains for a number of acts on The Billboard 200, including Corinne Bailey Rae (49-34, up 31%), Lily Allen's "Alright, Still . . ." (65-52, up 12%), Norah Jones' "Not Too Late" (69-59, up 11%), KT Tunstall's "Eye to the Telescope" (190-160, up 20%) and Van Morrison's "At the Movies" (a re-entry at No. 173, up 35%). On Top Pop Catalog, Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" returns to No. 1 with a 67% gain while the Beach Boys' "The Very Best of the Beach Boys" moves 12-7, up 28% ... news surrounding the 40th anniversary of the release of the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" propels its 109% jump from 29-4 on Top Pop Catalog Albums.

MARKET WATCH

• Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2006 when: AFI's "Decemberunderground" bowed at No. 1 with 182,000. Rappers Yung Joc and Ice Cube started at Nos. 3 and 4 with 148,000 and 144,000, respectively. It will be interesting to watch how DRM-free downloads will do in the next few months...

R. Kelly Flirts His Way To No. 1 Album Chart Debut

June 06, 2007, 10:50 AM ET
Katie Hasty, N.Y.

R. Kelly finds himself in a familiar spot atop The Billboard 200 with "Double Up," his sixth No. 1 on the tally. The Jive set moved 386,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, aided by the popularity of his new single "I'm a Flirt," which peaked at No. 2 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. Each of Kelly's 10 studio albums have reached either No. 1 or No. 2 on the big chart.

After debuting at No. 1 last week, Maroon 5's A&M/Octone effort "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" slips to No. 2 with 172,000, a 60% sales hit. Another former chart-topper, Linkin Park's "Minutes to Midnight" (Machine Shop/Warner Bros.), falls 2-3 with 126,000 (-36%).

Country singer Jason Aldean's sophomore set "Relentless" (Broken Bow) earns him his best charting and sales week yet, entering at No. 4 with 98,000. The album also debuts at No. 1 on Top Country Albums, a career first. The artist's 2005 self-titled debut peaked at No. 6 on the country tally and at No. 37 on The Billboard 200.

Daughtry's self-titled RCA debut climbs 6-5 in its 28th week on The Billboard 200 with a 7% sales decrease to 69,000.

Three albums sold roughly 50,000 copies this week, with only a difference of a few dozen between them. Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" rockets up 11-6 (+28%) with help from a $7.99 sales sticker at Best Buy this week. "Cold Summer" by hip-hop trio U.S.D.A., Young Jeezy's collaboration with Slick Pulla and Blood Raw, descends 4-7, a -48% change. Avril Lavigne's "The Best Damn Thing" (RCA) climbs 9-8 on a 3% increase.

Michael Buble's "Call Me Irresponsible" (143/Reprise) dips 7-9 with 48,000 (-23%) while Ozzy Osbourne's "Black Rain" (Epic) takes a 69% sales hit to 47,000 and falls 3-10.

Only two other albums bow inside the top 100 slots on The Billboard 200: Equal Vision act Circa Survive's "On Letting Go" sold 24,000 and debuts at No. 24, while Perry Farrell's Satellite Party's "Ultra Payloaded" (Columbia) joins the festivities at No. 91 with 8,000.

Album sales are down less than 1% from last week's total at 8.31 million units and down 10.6% compared to the same week last year.

R. Kelly's Chart Reign Continues With Sixth #1 Billboard Debut
New set Double Up continues R&B icon's hot streak.

By Chris Harris

With nearly 386,000 copies of his latest LP, Double Up, being snapped up, R. Kelly has earned himself the sixth chart-topping debut of his 15-plus year career (counting 2004's Unfinished Business, the second collaborative LP between himself and Jay-Z).

This latest triumph extends something of an astonishing pattern in R. Kelly's past releases. Of the 11 albums he's headlined (we won't even get into the many artists he's given songs to), all but one has opened at either #1 or #2 — his 1992 debut, Born Into the '90s, is the sole exception, debuting at #42. R. Kelly opened at #1 with 248,000 scans in 1995, while 1998's R. debuted at #2 with sales of nearly 216,000. TP-2.com opened with more than 543,000 copies in 2000 for a #1, and 2003's Chocolate Factory followed suit with 532,000 units. In 2004, Happy People/ U Saved Me took #2 on 403,000 copies sold, while 2005's TP-3: Reloaded racked up sales of 490,000-plus to grab another #1.

Similarly, 2002's The Best of Both Worlds, the first match-up between Kelly and Jay-Z, debuted at #2 with 223,400 scans.

Kelly's latest victory lap aside, it was a wishy-washy week in terms of new releases, with just four other newcomers cracking the top 200. According to the latest SoundScan tallies, country artist Jason Aldean's Relentless was the only other fresh one to breach the top 10, finishing at #4 with 98,000 copies grabbed up. Elsewhere, Circa Survive's On Letting Go opens at #24 with 23,700 scans, followed at #91 by Ultra Payloaded, the inaugural outing from ex-Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell's latest project, the Satellite Party, which achieved week-one sales of 7,600. Meanwhile, Richard Thompson's latest, Sweet Warrior, closes out the week at #111, with 6,500 sold.

As for the rest of next week's top 10, there hasn't been much change from the previous week's chart. Last week's #1, Maroon 5's It Won't Be Soon Before Long, slips a spot to #2 on 172,000 units, followed at #3 by Linkin Park's Minutes to Midnight having sold more than 126,000 copies. The eponymous debut from "American Idol" season five finalist Chris Daughtry's band of rockers climbs one spot to #5 with 69,000 scans, followed at #6 by Amy Winehouse's Back to Black, which returns to the top 10, surging ahead five spots with sales of 50,000.

The debut offering from Young Jeezy's latest project, U.S.D.A., a collective that features associated Slick Pulla and Blood Raw, falls three places to #7; Young Jeezy Presents U.S.D.A.: Cold Summer ended the week with close to 50,000 scans. Avril Lavigne's Best Damn Thing sits at #8 on the chart, with 49,700 sold, while Michael Bublé's Call Me Irresponsible pops up at #9, scanning 48,300. Closing out the top 10 with 46,900 in sales is Ozzy Osbourne's latest, Black Rain, which falls seven chart positions.

One of this week's biggest movers has Oprah Winfrey to thank for his 137 percent sales boost: Jumping 18 spots this week, with 45,300 scans, is The Evolution of Robin Thicke — the R&B smoothie appeared on Winfrey's program last week and, like Joss Stone last year, struck a chord with the audience.

Hip Hop DX...

Debuting this week at the #1 spot is R. Kelly, whose latest album Double Up sells an impressive 388k in its first week. Moving up 5 spots to #11 is Amy Winehouse. Her performance at the MTV Movie Awards (if you can call it that) must've garnered her some new fans, as she sells 49k this week, bringing her total to 493k.

USDA continues to have a strong presence on the charts in its second week as Cold Summer sells 49k at the #7 spot (145k overall). R&B sensation Ne-Yo doesn't have as much luck, as the singer's album Because of You slips out of the top 10 to #13, selling 40k this week(476k overall). Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's Strength & Loyalty lands on the charts at #17, with 31k sold in its 4th week (237k overall).

Corinne Bailey Rae jumps up 15 spots this week to #34, as her self-titled album manages to sell 16k this week, bringing her total to 1.5 million. Coming in at #44 and #45 are Musiq Soulchild's Luvanmusiq and Gym Class Heroes' As Cruel as School Children, respectively. Luvanmusiq is showing some real staying power, as the album moves up 2 spots to #44 in its 12th week, selling 12k (405k overall). As Cruel As School Children continues to have strong sales as the indie album moves another 12k units this week (363 overall).

Leaping from #104 to #79 is Rich Boy, whose self-titled album sells 8k this week, (311k overall). 7 spots below is fellow Interscope artist Young Buck, whose Buck The World only manages to sell 7k withs week (329k overall).
