This is anecdotal, but I remember when I was compiling my little "Madonna 50" thing from a few years ago, which had a few different inputs to come up with an overall ranking.

I noticed that the songs near the top of the list were often ranking higher than the average of their component positions, while songs lower on the list were often ranking below the average of their component positions. If that makes any sense.

I'm getting off track and too inside my head.

I'm super impressed/happy to see how well "3" is holding up on the digital charts! I love that song, but alot of people said it would have a fast fall, glad they were wrong!

And Bee #2 in airplay! What a great era! And Ke$ha's doing awesome!

:( For Rihanna, but the next single will probably do better, I'm not worried.

As for the whole ballad thing, radio will play a ballad if it's good. I mean Halo/IIWAB/AG are all ballads are have all done really well.

RR is not a masterpiece. Rihanna should have just come out with a smash to begin with a lukewarm song like this would be a hit later on if she starts out of the gate strong. WHy don't artist do this anymore? Put your most commercial single out first (i.e. Single Ladies, Womanizer, Umbrella, Sexyback, Promiscious, Yeah etc.) then put out different types of singles to appeal to different audiences. Do people forget about what made MJ, JJ, Whitney and Madonna albums sell so well in the 80s and 90s?

Yeah "The Girl Is Mine" and "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" were the most commercial singles from MJ's 80s albums. In the 80s many of the artists you mentioned had their biggest hit off the album as second (ie. "Billie Jean", "Papa Don't Preach", "How Will I Now" etc.) or third singles (ie. "When I Think Of You", "The Way You Make Me Feel", "Escapade" etc.)

Selling over 100.000 isn't bad though. There's no doubt that "Russian Roulette" is underperforming, but we still don't know if it's a flop :)

130k is awful. Imagine if she has 33% decrease. Her second week would be less than 90k. Combine that with stalling airplay and what do you really have? Not much. I guess it's good that she debuted at #9 at least.

Well it looks like it will have the same chart-run as "Bad Romance". It will probably gain a bit again once the video premieres.

HITS:

DIGITALIA: Four artists have already broken Rihanna's Digital Tracks sales record of 9.9 million tracks set in 2008, including Michael Jackson (11.3m), Lady Gaga (11.1m), Black Eyed Peas (10.3m) and Taylor Swift (10m), according to our good pals at Soundscan. Next week, the 2008 digital album sales total of 65 million will be broken, as well s the 1 billion track sales mark. (11/11p)

It looks like BDS has the Melanie Hall single "Somebody Come Get Me" credited as Melanie Fiona but Billboard corrected it for the R&B 100.

46 38 TAYLOR SWIFT FIFTEEN

Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! I would do this eleven more times, but eh.

19 hit songs. That's the most this decade for a main artist, breaking her out of a tie with Eminem. Taylor party time! It's even more amazing because she was also A) 2008's biggest albums artist and B) has the best-selling album this year. Let's see where the CMA's tonight take her. She got the ACM Album OTY, BMI Song of the Year twice, and CMT Video OTY twice, but hasn't yet hit it big with wins at CMA's.

ETA: Also, if you separate songs from the original album from songs on the re-release, she has either 7 from original/6 from re-release or 8 from original/5 from re-release. Either way, the original is tied for or stands alone as the album yielding the largest # of hits.

Music Made of Awesome, 11/25:

1. Defying Gravity/Lea Michele & Chris Colfer 5 pts, 2. 3/Britney Spears 41, 3. You Belong with Me/Taylor Swift 46, 4. 15/Taylor Swift 30, 5. Be Italian/Fergie 1

"Empire State Of Mind" outpeaked "Run This Town"? As much as I love "Pretty Wings", it was about time it fell from the #1 spot. I didn't know "Papers" was in the Top 5 on R&B.

I'm so upset that Pap can't go top 5. :-( I can't believe it's #1 on H100 airplay and streaming, yet only #7 on the H100. :-X Why aren't people buying it more! >:( I just can't stand the fact of it having a lower H100 peak than LG. It's been so much bigger.

Well, Doesn't Mean Anything isn't a good song and ESOM benefits from Jay being red-hot right now, the Yankees winning the World Series, etc. Alicia probably stands a much better chance of doing better with Try Sleeping... than she did with DMA.

Thanks BKS

ESoM moving up! Nice! And nice to see Bey rebound back into the top 10...and at least Riri got a top 10 with this before it falls.

Congrats for Taylor. Unlike many of her songs that debut and plummit, shes seeing upward growth here. Nice to see Already Gone up as well!

Thanks BKS!

Yay another week in the top 10 for Beyonce!! Wish she could have outpeaked #10, but it's still awesome!

Glad to see ESOM tie RTT's peak! Two great songs! Hopefully it can sneak in a week at #1!! Lovin' Ke$ha & Kelly's gains!!

Oh and great to see "Fifteen" in the top 40!
