Especially impressive for Swift is the fact her albums not only appeared twice but they improved positions from the first year to the second, and in the case of Fearless improved in units sold as well. Twain did it as well, maintaining same position from 98 to 99 but moved more units in 99.

5 albums selling over 2 million copies - surely an increase from 2008!
An increase? Hardly. I hope you took a good look at areyoureadytojump's list, going back to 1996. There was a time, back in the 1990s, when TWENTY albums sold 2M and/or went 2xP in a single calendar year.
Take a good look, boys and girls...Ten years ago (at the very least), you needed to go 3xP and then some to finish the year in the top 10. Now, all that is required may be platnium.
The average of the top 10 in 1999 was 5.469 million. In 2000, it was 6.042M, probably the highest since the introduction of the SoundScan tracking system.
The average of the top 10 in 2009 was 2.138M, which is a 60.9 percent drop from 1999 (a 64.6% drop from 2000).
If the rate of decline continues, by 2019 we will see an industry where the average of the top 10 albums of that year will be just under 836,000. To make the top 10 in 2019, you would simply need to go gold.
Looks simple; but unfortunately we are already in an age where even some artists, who were once multi-platinum, maybe as little as 2 years ago, are having trouble trying to sell 500,000. By 2015, going 2xP could very well be a thing of the past.
In the last decade, we witnessed the death of the full-scale music and movie superstore/megastore in the U.S. (Virgin, Tower and HMV). In this decade, we are likely to witness the death of the major music industry, as more and more artists will be inclined to bypass or reject the major labels altogether, and use the Web and the independent companies to reach their audience.
"To all those who have wondered if America's beacon still burns as bright, tonight we prove once more that the true strength of our nation comes not by the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals - democracy, liberty, opportunity and unyielding hope."

It was an increase over the previous year, which is what they said.
The top 9 albums of 2009 all sold more than the comparable top 9 albums of 2008. 5 albums sold 2m+ in 2009, 4 in 2008. That's an increase.
Everyone is already aware of all the rest of what you said. The industry is doing poorly on the albums side, and digital album sales are not growing fast enough to offset the physical losses (and thus overall sales are down 13% this year).

RE the second category in the SoundScan part of the first post- it should be digital songs, not artists- and why does it say Jason DeRulo and Owl City for #s 9 and 10?

Thanks for posting the info.
You're right. It was wrong. I'm updating little by little.

Ho about vinyl albums continuing to inch up? Would be funny if vinyl eventually overtakes CDs and the physical format comes full circle. (of course, it would take years and years of continued growth for vinyl and continued loss for CD for that to happen).
Have digital singles sales kinda reached their zenith? The increase was not all that much from 2008.
