Hey Pulse folks! I haven't compiled a personal chart in AGES, but the excitement of seeing various best-of-the-decade charts for the past few months have reawakened my inner chart-freak, so here I am. However, despite the inspiration, I am limiting myself to yearly charts, because stretching myself directly to decade charts will undoubtedly strain my chart muscles beyond repair! :o
2009 has been a pretty great year, musically speaking, to me. It started off with a bang with the release of Animal Collective's now-legendary Merriweather Post Pavillion, followed by the brewed-for-thirty-year project of Willie And The Wheel, and each subsequent month has brought at least one great record to sustain the momentum. Along the way, there have been several disappointments (Kelly Clarkson, Arctic Monkeys), several pleasant surprises (Rihanna, Jamie Cullum) and of course, there are those who stick to their standard of excellence (Miranda Lambert, Yeah Yeah Yeahs). Naturally, given the fact that I just got back in the game, compiling these charts wasn't a breeze for me. However, as it turned out, the most taxing part was actually the process of eliminating an influx of candidates, and I'd say that speaks volume to how much I've enjoyed so many musical outputs during this past year.
Finally, I will post my top 100 tracks and top 75 albums of the year in this thread. I will post them in parts so as to increase my post counts build some anticipation and allow you to absorb them a little better. Needless to say, your feedback is going to be highly appreciated, be it complaints, disgusts, surprises, etc. Enjoy!

Rihanna and ZBB FTW! (You've neglected Carrie, so I should hate this... but I can't. Nice choices.)

Aw, I didn't expect a response so soon! This won't go unnoticed. Promise. To make you feel better, I have two Carrie tunes among the candidates ("Songs Like This" and "Someday When I Stop Loving You"), but as I mentioned before, the competition's fierce this year! So, she didn't make the cut... :'(

To be fair, Brothersport, Fire Bomb, Highway 20 Ride, Me and Your Cigarettes, Need You Now, and Fifteen are all pretty epic.

I would've chose "The House That Built Me" over "Me and Your Cigarettes". Stunning song.
Unless, of course, Miranda is featured twice.

Minimalism's Top 100 Tracks of 2009Part 3: 20 - 1[/b] 20) White Denim - I Start To Runwww.youtube.com/watch?v=VW26TBF1boo19) Passion Pit - Moth's Wingswww.youtube.com/watch?v=Px12JPgc0ic18) The Very Best - Yalirawww.youtube.com/watch?v=8QvoxRbFB_c17) Jay-Z - Empire State Of Mind (feat. Alicia Keys)www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UjsXo9l6I816) Major Lazer - Keep It Goin' Louder (feat. Nina Sky & Ricky Blaze)www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1UJXVcdKTY15) Annie - Hey Anniewww.youtube.com/watch?v=sFdk1lzNC2814) Cymbals Eat Guitars - And The Hazy Seawww.youtube.com/watch?v=EuP4y0Dfyyk13) Mew - Introducing Palace Playerswww.youtube.com/watch?v=kz0aVur1F2A12) The xx - Heart Skipped A Beatwww.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKMyf51lR0E11) Röyksopp - The Girl And The Robot (feat. Robyn)www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIWRYwCGEF4Imaginary drum-roll starts.... 10) F*ck Buttons - Surf Solarwww.youtube.com/watch?v=5hQXSsbQCMsIts epic length alone, along with the brazen band name, will immediately intimidate casual listeners, which is a shame, because beneath the seemingly out-there setting, lies a trance-inducing track that deserves to be heard, nay, experienced. Once the squeaking synths, the foreboding organs, and the clacking beats roll into one, your surroundings will dissipate, your mind will close, ten minutes will pass like two, and you will be consumed with the urgency to hit 'repeat'. Who says music can't get you high? 9) Suckers - It Gets Your Body Movin'www.youtube.com/watch?v=fW-Ww-cKG9ENo, it's not a highly-digitalized electro track that commands you to hit the dance floor, though it will probably results in your body swaying organically all the same. Preferably in the vicinity of a campfire, though. The band hollers the track's title religiously for a good chunk of the track, between blaring trumpets, murmuring guitars and heart-thumping drum kicks (not to mention, a killer whistle break-down). By the middle of track, it just feels like the most logical thing in the world to holler along with them. 8) Japandroids - Wet Hairwww.youtube.com/watch?v=bnJn2Rh3ki8With three concisely constructed bars, Japandroids perfectly conjures up the passion, the recklessness, and above all, the fuck-the-world-I-don't-give-a-damn attitude of youth. No, it's not the most perfect thing ever, but damn if it isn't resonant. Meanwhile, the melody, which basically consists of exactly one melodic sequence, plays like the most perfect combination of youthful optimism (for the youngsters) and melancholy (for those who are past that stage). The best of both worlds, to say the least. 7) Phoenix - Lisztomaniawww.youtube.com/watch?v=4BJDNw7o6soPhoenix's always-potent pop sensibilities have never been utilized better. Incorporating multiple hooks that will make any renowned hit-writers proud, this track sounds effortless and unfettered, despite some unorthodox arrangement choices. Moreover, with lyric that reads like an assortment of stickies, but with a clear sense of inner-self conflicts, the song is opened for interpretations, which makes it relatable without being pandering. And above all, it makes pop-rock sounds cool for once. 6) Willie Nelson & Asleep At The Wheel - Hesitation Blueswww.youtube.com/watch?v=MjQvqxaFrFEWhatever happens to the good olden days of musicians jamming together to create organic pieces of music? As technology develops at an alarming rate, more and more musical outputs sound unnecessarily overproduced, over-thought, and worse yet, cut-and-paste. Fortunately, some people actually still remember how to play it old-school, and you can actually feel the joy these people had while creating the record emanating from the speakers. And trust me, it's damn infectious. 5) The Big Pink - Dominoswww.youtube.com/watch?v=OGnNlQ-KNv4Every once in a while, a track comes along and defies all rules pertaining taste, and transcends any logical analysis one can make. Boasting perhaps the biggest (and best) pop hook of the year, "Dominos" would probably top multiple charts for multiple weeks if given the chance. In Pulse universe, it is comparable to how utterly satisfying it is to mock the downfall of your favorite diva's enemies, or whatever. It doesn't really matter, simply because: These girls fall like dominos, dominos!4) Dirty Projectors - Stillness Is The Movewww.youtube.com/watch?v=YMPF6lpM0XM&feature=fvstOnce that swirling groove kicks in, you are helplessly captured. The remix-ready beat, the hypnotic melody, the terrific, melismatic vocal work that wouldn't sound out-of-place in a Mariah Carey album (with whistle notes, no less!), the haunting, poetic lines; they all come together like the pop track you've been waiting for your whole life: relentlessly catchy, appropriately edgy, slightly bizarre, and seemingly immune to burn-out. And isn't that what every track should aim for? 3) Animal Collective - My Girlswww.youtube.com/watch?v=zol2MJf6XNEForget all the super-romantic ballads you've heard this year: this is the most swoon-worthy track of the year. Sometimes all it takes is unabashed honesty to touch one's heart, and these guys clearly realized that. Packed with sheepish self-awareness and thoroughly unselfish pleadings that ring true for basically everyone, this song is timeless. And it proves that you can create a super-romantic love song only with gurgling synths and tribal-infused beats, and without a single mention of the L word. 2) Miranda Lambert - The House That Built Mewww.youtube.com/watch?v=NwqZttv2GhMA conversational piece about a girl who visits her childhood home, this track serves as a reminder of how we sometimes try to move on and adapt to our surroundings so much that we lose track of our selves. Broken-hearted and confused, this girl wanders back to her former home, only to find the current resident denying her entrance. As she tries and tries to support her case to no avail (she ultimately reduces her pleading from being allowed to "come in" to "just walk around"), our hearts break with hers, because we all feel how she feels, and that unnamed woman ice-queen she talks to is now officially one of the biggest bitches in music history. 1) Japandroids - Young Hearts Spark Firewww.youtube.com/watch?v=jOoHAbnhxNIThis is the song that must be heard by every people who have ever experienced frustration and fear, or the confusion and self-realization that come with the loss of innocence (basically, well, everyone). Frantically played and haphazardly sung/screamed, its imperfection only serves as its strongest asset: the song feels raw, real, and genuinely moving. You don't marvel at this song. You feel it. With the current economic downturn affecting the whole world as the backdrop, this track plays as the ultimate expression of our collective frustration. It's almost as if every scream, every guitar crunch, every drum plow, they all come from within ourselves. A universal anthem at its truest sense. This is the soundtrack to our lives. This is the new incarnation of "Smells Like Teen Spirit". It doesn't get any better than that.

The House That Built Me is a classic. Miranda kills it. I need to see her live. I would've ranked it above the Japandroids, but the Japandroids song is pretty good and I love the lyric:
Background, we're too drunk to feel it
So overall, this list is a WIN.

Thanks! Seeing your highlighted tracks, I'm even more eager to see your list. I didn't realize you listen to country as well! I have a strange relationship with country. Sometimes I can go months without paying attention to it and then sometimes I am in love with it. I actually have no country on my year-end list aside from two country artists (the obvious ones) which surprises me. :o Oddly enough, I have just recently entered my country-love phase again and currently have 6 country songs charting on my personal chart. Most of those won't appear until next year's year-end chart, though. (Josh Turner's "Why Don't We Just Dance", Reba's "Consider Me Gone", Lady A's "Need You Now", etc. all missed the 2009 deadline for me and are 2010) TMI, Danny. TMI. LOL Excuse my ramblings. I can't control them. Minimalism's Top 100 Tracks of 2009Part 3: 20 - 1 [/b] 20) White Denim - I Start To Runwww.youtube.com/watch?v=VW26TBF1boo19) Passion Pit - Moth's Wingswww.youtube.com/watch?v=Px12JPgc0ic18) The Very Best - Yalirawww.youtube.com/watch?v=8QvoxRbFB_c17) Jay-Z - Empire State Of Mind (feat. I have not heard a good portion of these songs but since you've included links I shall give them a listen! Fantastic write-ups, I must say. I love reading your insight into each song and artist. I am an open-minded, open-hearted music lover/dork (and I say that lovingly) and I get the sense that you are the same way which I love. :) I will say that I am sort of shocked that "The House That Built Me" isn't numero uno on your list but I can see why you put #1 above it - great song which I can totally relate to. First time I ever heard it, too, believe it or not, so I'll have to thank you for sharing it with me. Thank you. ;)

Great list! While I don't love all your inclusions, you've included some of my favourite singles of the year in "Bulletproof", "Raindrops" and "Remedy". Yet another one mistakenly believing "Zero" is better than "Heads Will Roll" makes me sad, though. :'(

Not one, but TWO doses of Japandroids in your top 10. Bravo. Barring the country cuts, which I'm sure I would otherwise love had I given them a chance, I love the entirety of your list!
If I haven't already, I fully endorse a Best Indie/Eclectic Poster win for Minimalism. ;)

Great chart. I is interesting to see the Japandroids dominating this year. They kind of got lost in the shuffle for me this year and I did not really get into them. I will have to revisit their album sometime soon. It is nice to see the Suckers in the top ten. I enjoyed that song earlier this year and it is nice to see more obscure song like It Gets Your Body Movin' in the top ten.

If I had had to guess your number one, I would have gone with "Dominos." You surprise me by putting it as low as it is.
Great stuff and I, too, enjoyed reading your write-ups. As with TGAC, you've piqued my curiosity with a few of these and have given me some stuff to add to my listening list.

Japandroids has been pretty prominent for me this whole year, ever since I first had a taste of "Young Hearts Spark Fire" way back in April (or was it March?), so their entries on these lists are ones of the easier choices for me. You should revisit their album, even TGAC is starting to cave in now! Thank you, kind sir. :) What made you think I'd put "Dominos" at #1? I don't think I ever gave away my love for it on Pulse before? Oh, since I'm pretty busy right now, the album list will experience a little delay. Soon, I promise.
