Plus, if Scott Borchetta thinks that he can diss American Idol like that and not have someone roundhouse him like there's no tomorrow (*standing ovation for Kelly Clarkson*), then he's nuts.
Not quite sure how this is relevant to the current discussion (seems rather random), but I don't quite think we can place blame on Taylor for
his tactless outburst(s).
A songwriter constructing songs around love?
Imagine. You are aware that love (even the "lovey-dovey" brand) is the focal-point of, I'd argue, the majority of songs?
Riffle through her catalog and present me with more than a select few tracks dealing with fantasy-driven themes ("prince charming/romeo"). I see people claim that her writings are
so immature and unbearably repetitive in that respect all the time, yet see little adequate justification. If those who made these claims were
truly familiar with her body of work (in its entirety) as opposed to having limited knowledge outside of her signature hits, they would know that it's simply not the case. I think because the "fairytale/fantasy" themes have been prominently featured in a few of her singles ("Love Story", "Today Was A Fairytale", and "White Horse") people unwittingly believe it's all she is capable of producing. Listen to songs housed in her latest album ("Last Kiss", "Back To December", "Dear John", and "Haunted" for instance) for blatant evidence that proves the contrary. Each aforementioned track discusses relationships in a much different fashion; the lyrical content shows growth and exemplifies the maturity so many detractors are apparently failing to acknowledge.
Again, I only know of a select few tracks where revenge is the prominent theme.
A bit presumptuous, wouldn't we say? Let's not let our own personal feelings toward Taylor lead to unjustifiable statements. Just because she's been in multiple relationships over the last few years (the extent of each we know
very little about), doesn't mean sex was involved (I know, it's difficult to digest that Taylor might not sleep with each and every person she involves herself with, but it is a distinct possibility).
Yes, it's her mere acknowledgment of what genre she falls under that brings her success on multiple formats. This explains why Jessica Simpson is so successful (after all, didn't she proclaim to now be a country artist?). Mandy Moore could claim to be an R&B artist day after day, doesn't mean Urban radio is going to put any of her material into heavy rotation. Each format, radio station rather, plays what fits into their respective playlists (and country programmers obviously aren't hearing anything they find too offensive to the genre, otherwise they wouldn't be giving her hit after hit).
There is obviously a fairly large portion of people who consider Taylor to be a "country" artist (to whatever degree), otherwise she wouldn't have so much support from country radio or the country community (in the form of awards, acceptance, and recognition). It may be hard to swallow, but that's just the way it is.
I wouldn't hold my breath.
