I'm surprised its going to be free streaming for so long. I assume this means its getting an official street date in October, could they possibly be coming with a part 2 or an addendum to these tracks as an incentive to buy after youve been listening?

So it's not just free streamimg, but a free digital copy of the album?

Yes, it's free to download.
(I'm listening, but can't for the life of me get the dang PDF booklet to open so I can look at album credits.)

I downloaded my copy on the iTunes store. I watched the stream and it was kind of cutting in and out but I get the sense Apple paid U2 for the album. Listening as I type!

Not sure what the financial benefits are of such a move is (though I'm sure Apple has paid the guys well), but great for fans.

On October 13th the physical release of Songs of Innocence comes with a 24-page booklet. A deluxe, gatefold double album, contains an acoustic session of songs from the album and four additional tracks: Lucifer's Hands, The Crystal Ballroom, The Troubles (Alternative version) and Sleep Like a Baby Tonight (Alternative Perspective Mix by Tchad Blake) The album will also be available as a gatefold, double white-vinyl LP with an exclusive remix of "The Crystal Ballroom".

Ya know, I never thought about this, but... U2 has never had a hand in producing its albums (credited, anyhow). We often see that with bands, though, especially the biggest ones (i.e. Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc.)

I was wondering why this was on my iTunes lol. Nice to see that Ryan Tedder produced quite a bit of track on this.

Doesn't work for me anymore. I must have missed the cutoff. It says "Purchased" when I try to download but it doesn't show up anywhere in my ITUNES except in the store. Edit: Never mind. Cloud wasn't turnt on or some shit.

Post-first-listen reaction: good album, though I've never listened to anything beyond their singles to know how it compares to their other work. Big fan of Danger Mouse's production - a couple on the back of the album had a bit of an Electric Guest vibe (DM produced their debut album a couple years ago).

This is easily their best 2000s album and I haven't even listened to the last two songs yet. Wise production choices and the first four songs are perfect.

It's just an observation. I actually never thought about it or paid much mind to it, until seeing the credits for the new album. I just thought that the guys may have co-produced, given they compose their material. It doesn't detract from its status as one of the best bands of all time or anything. Such a light-bulb moment, I know- some acts write and produce their material, and some co-write and don't. And- gasp- some actually don't do, either. Like, OMG.

But what does "producing" mean in case of U2 when the band plays all the instruments anyway?

www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/rumormill.cgi ACHTUNG, BABIES: A few months ago, after it was reported elsewhere that the next U2 album would be delayed until 2015, Interscope topper John Janick assured us the album would arrive this year, and now reports are circulating that it could come out as soon as September. In fact, Universal Music Venezuela and Universal Music Colombia briefly posted tweets saying the album was coming out in September, Rolling Stone notes. French newspaper Nice-Matin reported that the group had recently shot a video in Nice, and the Irish Times quoted a source saying there will be a single in September, an album in September or October and a tour announced in December, with dates beginning in April of next year. "It is believed," says the article, via U2 fan site atu2.com, that "the band will release it with little of the fanfare usually associated with a new U2 album." The band has never spent this much time on an album, nor has it worked with nearly as many producers; they are Danger Mouse, will.i.am, David Guetta, RedOne, Ryan Tedder and Paul Epworth, who is said to have helmed the final round of sessions. (8/19a) Wait, so its release this month actually wasn't a surprise?

Not sure what the financial benefits are of such a move is (though I'm sure Apple has paid the guys well), but great for fans. U2 figures they can release the music free since they will rack up the cash via touring anyway? In addition, they are giving (potentially) hundreds of millions of people in-depth exposure to the group. I bet catalog sales get a huge boost. Can you imagine if 1% of the 500mm buy a single U2 album? That's 5 million units right there. I'm looking forward to listening to it on my long flight tonight. It's a brilliant move. Just like the millions of free redemptions from the "Red" campaign earlier this year, they are getting their music to consumers.

There's some backend money coming to them somewhere though. You can bet on that.

It is interestingβ¦years ago tours promoted albums and now if you are someone who is in demand touring artist, you can pretty much use the album to promote your tour since that is were the big money is.
If I were a young artist, I would make sure I developed a great stage show and reputation because when the pop hits end you can stay relevant.

I feel like this tactic backfired to an extent (probably more for Apple than U2), because a lot of people are complaining that they didn't want the album on their devices. I don't get why people are flipping sh*t over this, and not wanting it, and a waste of space, and blah blah blah. Just uncheck the songs on your iTunes, it's not that hard...

At first I thought the same thing but then I remembered when I got my iPhone 5, my settings were set to download every song I had ever purchased or received from the iTunes store automatically. So if I bought a song on my macbook, it would automatically download from the cloud to my phone and it took me a bit to figure out how to make it stop doing that. So for people who have that as their setting, either because that's the way it is or because they want it set that way (for some reason), it could be annoying, and if you're as anal about how music is organized as I am, having that set like that can be frustrating.
