FEB 19 Tamia - The Howard Theatre - Washington, DCI'm gonna actually try to write occasionally as well as post pictures... be nice! I'm no Edward R. Murrow... Hard Work, Hardly Work... Shooting Tamia shouldn't be difficult. She has several hits, dedicated fans, a fantastic band and background singers, and above all...she's beautiful. All of these things, plus two nights to get images with no other photographers in the house, and it should be a walk in the park. Nah. All of the reasons why she should be easy to shoot were the reasons it became a challenge.
Everyone wants to be around her. It makes it hard to shoot candidly when everyone is "camera aware". No prob; I'll just lay back, shoot wide, capture the scene rather than just her. The road manager made it clear that I could only shoot two songs as opposed to the standard three or all night that I sometimes get at this venue. This will limit the time photographers and fans shoot pictures of her, she'll look fresh. No biggie; I have two days to get different looks. I love shooting at the Howard Theatre. They give me freedom to move around the venue and backstage access. The only obstacle is the seating. With no pit, and tables pressed to the stage it makes it harder for me to get a variety of shots because she's short... It's nothing; I just shot Stephanie Mills there, Tamia has her by 6-7 inches...
I'm ready to shoot now. I put on the 50mm f1.2 for backstage shots. You need that speed in low light areas back there. Tamia comes up the steps and its kinda weird. No one mobs her, but everyone slowly moves toward her. A black hole-like effect. I put the camera on silent shutter and pop a few frames. Between the band, her background singers, and (for lack of a better, nicer word) entourage its hard to get a clear shot. I get something. The band strikes up I hustle to the front of the house and go with the 70-200mm. I need the reach for close ups and I can go wide enough to keep the shots interesting and since this would be the fourth time shooting her, I want the pictures to look different from the last times. This night, I wanted drama. The next night, I wanted fun. The aisle which seemed wider than usual earlier that night, closed up significantly so the 24-70mm stayed in the bag. I got the regular "who you shootin' for?"or "can you take a pic of me and my lady?" questions, cell phone blockade, and "don't even think about standing here all night " looks in the 7:30 minutes I was shooting. I'm no little guy by any stretch of the imagination but I'm not blocking an entire stage! Tamia is gonna see you after I move... Exactly two songs in, I see her manager looking at me. I wrap it up, and plot on catching her exit...
I figured she would bolt off stage and into the dressing room so I went with the 50mm again and bumped up the ISO. I would rather have a grainy shot than no shot at all. I got in the doorway and popped about 5 frames...
I used the same plan the next night and got some different looks. I wonder if you guys can figure out the main difference from Saturday's shots from Sunday's shots...

Not surprised that Tamia managed to secure another major label deal after going indie, but I'm surprised it's happening now on the verge of her turning 40. Good for her.

The type of music she makes doesn't seem to be all that expensive to produce. If she's making such good music on a limited budget, it can only help her to get it out there more with a larger budget. I hope she will start commissioning club mixes for her singles again. |

Congrats to her! Even though, I'm on the fence with this move. Hopefully, the label does right by her and this isn't just an one album then drop type of situation.
I honestly not surprised by deal due to her age, but more so that "R&B" isn't in style right now (especially her type).

Yay! I love Tamia. I've liked or loved all of her albums so far, and several of her songs never leave the playlist I sync to my phone (Stranger in My House, Beautiful Surprise, If I Were You, Wanna Be).
Definitely need some club mixes too. Her last official package was "Me" I think. The Soul Solution mix of that was great.
