It was also considered an "impossible" feat for the first 37 years of the Hot 100's existence. That of course all changed on Sep 2, 1995 when Michael Jackson's "You Are Not Alone" became the first song to debut at #1 on the Hot 100. And when "Hold It Against Me" debuts at #1 on next week's chart, which comes out tomorrow, it will be the #998th #1 song since the Hot 100 began in 1958. wasn't katy perry's IKAG 1000. #1? Yes, of the Rock Era, which dates a few years before the Billboard Hot 100.

Since 2009, 4 songs have debuted at no. 1 out of 32, or 12.5%. Not so rare anymore (This assumes HIAM is no. 1). Of course it is still rare and impressive Britney did it twice, but it'll only become statistically more likely as digital downloads grow. You know, there's a reason why artists like Enimem and Britney did it recently but never 10 years ago when they were still as popular or even more popular.

^^ I agree, but I believe a #1 debut is more likely for some artist than others. Britney is one of those, whose front-loaded sales help her reach her peak the very first week.

Very few artists can sell on name value alone. 4 songs debuted at #1 since 2009 and two of them were from the same artist.

Of course it is still rare and impressive Britney did it twice, but it'll only become statistically more likely as digital downloads grow. Possibly, possibly not. The growth in digital sales help but the timing helps as well. There were plenty of cases of songs that had strong digital openings that were blocked by a huge single. For example, Taylor Swift's "Today Was a Fairytale" opened w/ 325k but didn't top the charts b/c it was blocked by the massive Tik Tok. Yet Ke$ha was able to top the charts w/ only 280k. Also, w/ songs being able to chart on airplay alone, you can't have too much airplay but have to have huge out-of-the-gate sales at the same time. Artists that get multi-format airplay will likely debut on the chart before the single is released. On top of that, only the first two singles typically have large digital debuts. By the time the third single is out, the album is available, which means the track was available from the start. Those songs will follow the typical climb up the charts most songs see. Notice that all the #1 debuts since 2009 have been lead singles. This further cuts down the amount of songs that have the chance to debut at #1. There's a reason why Britney (if HIAM debuts at #1) has half of the total #1 debuts since 2009. Her airplay is mostly from pop but she gets huge out-of-the-gate sales despite limited airplay due to her fanbase and the fact that she's Britney Spears. Britney perfectly fits the criteria needed to debut at the top in the current climate but not every artist does. So while I think a #1 debut could become more common for artists like Britney, it won't become too common for artists in general.

I know there's luck involved between debuting and no. 2 and no. 1. We've had how many songs at no. 2 since 2009? I can only remember three without looking: "I Gotta Feeling", "California Gurls" and "Today Was a Fairytale". Anyway, we can only prove our arguments if we get all the data and analyze it. I'm not willing to do that. Empirically, however, you can argue that digital sales are growing for both songs debuting and songs already on the chart, so the probability still remains basically the same. I understand that that is possible.

Yes, multiformat artists like Bey and Rihanna will harder to debut at #1 because their first days airplay will allow their songs to chart low on Hot 100, unlike Britney. Unless they release their songs at the same day with radio release date

Over on the Digital Songs chart, things brighten up. The arrival of "Hold It Against Me" with an as-expected 411,000 downloads sold in its first week is not just Spears' best sales week for a digital song, but also the largest debut for a woman as a lead artist. It trumps the 325,000 that Swift's "Today Was a Fairytale" sold on the Feb. 6, 2010, chart. This week, Spears leads two more top 10 bows: Avril Lavigne's "What the Hell" (No. 6 with 163,000) and West and Jay-Z's "H*A*M" (No. 10 with 125,000). The latter reached digital retailers one day later (Jan. 12) than the other two titles. www.billboard.com/#/news/cake-sco....004139371.story

Only #6 for Avril ? I though she could make Top 5 Took her awhile to get to #2 and then she, along with HAM, went out of the top 5 sooner than expected

Other info from the Billboard article:
Last week's Digital Songs No. 1, Mars' "Grenade," falls to No. 2 (219,000; down 21%). The Black Eyed Peas' "The Time (Dirty Bit)" falls 5-7 (157,000; down 13%), Lil Wayne's "6 Foot 7 Foot" declines 7-8 (146,000; down 10%), and Ke$ha's "We R Who We R" tumbles 6-9 (141,000; down 19%).
Digital track sales this past week totaled 27.5 million downloads, down 8% compared with last week (29.8 million) and 8% stacked next to the comparable week of 2010 (25.4 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 57.2 million, up 8% compared with the same total at this point last year (52.9 million).

Only #6 for Avril ? I though she could make Top 5 Took her awhile to get to #2 and then she, along with HAM, went out of the top 5 sooner than expected Yeah but it had spent 2 days @ #2 with a pretty big lead compared to Bruno and Katy and 1.5 day @ #3 and another day in Top 5. It's only out of Top 5 for 1.5 day so i just hoped But #6 is pretty well for her though ;)

To be nit-picky, it's more like, "Well done those who purchased the single." :) (even with zero airplay points, it would be No. 1 by a comfortable margin).

About 132 + 219= 351 (Grenade) So Britney would have beat him with digital sales alone. Well, of course hearing the song on the radio caused a lot of the downloads to happen, but still. I wonder if this is the largest margin of victory in terms of points in awhile.

Pretty good for Avril, specially in comparison to 'Alice'. It's her highest charting track since 'Girlfriend'.

"Just the 18th song to debut at #1" at what point is it no longer making history. It's extremely rare and Britney joins Mariah as the only artist to have multiple #1 debuts.
