This album would have been perfect if she had left the last two songs off.

Good album, "White Heat" is one of her BEST ALBUM TRACKS EVER. That would've smashed if that was a single.

I like to replace the last two songs on the album with the Who's That Girl singles. I can't stand 'Jimmy Jimmy' and 'Love Makes the World Go Round'. The title track is rather annoying as well. Good album, "White Heat" is one of her BEST ALBUM TRACKS EVER. That would've smashed if that was a single. I never see 'White Heat' get any love. :'( It's one of my favorites.

To this day, the single version of both Open Your Heart and La Isla Bonita is still unreleased on a CD format. The single version is far more superior than the album version. True Blue is my high school album.

Does the single version of Open Your Heart incorporate more vocal effect/elements from the 12" version, especially between the chorus and verse. (like the vocal stuttering effect?...sorry if my description is crappy.)

Madge's "whitest" album of the 80s- though on the strength of her name alone, it did chart on R&b Albums. (none of the singles charted R&B, though). This was the album that hinted at the "serious" artist that was to come- "Live to Tell" and "Papa Don't Preach" are to of her best, and they contain two of her best vocal performances. "Open Your Heart" is one of her most joyous- and commanding tracks. And "La Isla Bonita" was the first track to show her love of Latin sounds. The title track is a cute homage to the girl-group/doo-wop sounds of the 50s/60s. "Where's the Party" is a fun track, and continues to pop up on tours (in distorted vocal form on the Confessions Tour during "Music Inferno"). The last two tracks are the runts of the album litter, but I can listen to them- they're alright filler. "Jimmy Jimmy" is kinda obnoxious, but it has a special place in my heart, as it's my namesake. :)

This is my 2nd favorite album from the 80s Madonna. Her debut remains my absolute favorite album from her.

imho This album is her weakest 80's album it was an attempt to recreate LAV. Her best album is her debut tbh.

Interesting to see so many different opinions here. This is the album that made me a Stan actually this was the first non-compilation cassette that I bought (and my second ever)... And I kept listening to it time after time. I considered it her second best of the 80s after the iconic Like a Prayer. I loved the serious songs. LTT was a great song where I could feel Madonna's emotion. It had a better vocal delivery than CFY, and the structure of the song with that break in between and the 'if I run away' part was different and delicate. PDP was another great song and probably her third biggest song of the 80s for many. At least back home it was so, after LAV and LAP. Her video was pure gold, the lyrics, the strings and overall production, and her vocal delivery too. And then White Heat was a great movie song. Catchy, with great structure, background cop voices, a should've-been single! Then I also loved the trifecta of Latin-infused singles. Yay!! Open Your Heart's trumpets, the repetition of 'open your heart, I'll make you love me' as background chorus is very typical of classic salsa songs :) plus the interesting fact that a Spanish version released by Venezuelan-Peruvian singer Melissa 'Abre tu corazón' was released before Madonna's song (apparently Melissa's producer got ahold of the initial demo that was prepared for Cyndi Lauper and used it for the Spanish version), made many Latins love Madonna even more! The video was another great addition to her catalogue, too, and the lyrics worked. Of course, the best for us Latins was seeing that her fifth single actually had a title in Spanish :o I remember once I looked at the newspaper page of music charts and it said that the #1 song in some country was La Isla Bonita by Madonna -and I thought why they don't just write the pretty island or whatever the title is in English! Lol I loved the song, the influence of Spanish and Caribbean rhythms, the awesome video with her wearing a gorgeous red flamenco dress, how she gracefully included Spanish words without feeling forced, and again how she delivered the song -and Latins embraced her fully, making this the second biggest hit of the album. The third leg is of course that album fillet that y'all criticize >:( LMTWGR. That was a secret pleasure for me -and I'm sure many Latins too. My mom -not a Madonna fan by any means- loved this song. It was a Latin party song! The percussion, trumpets, whistles are too close to home and could've been played at any family party in the 80s. Guilty pleasure and a top 5 in my personal chart. True Blue was another gem. Great homage to the doo wop sound. Harmonies were great. My mom and u liked how M sang in a lower tone while the other voices sing 'true love ooh baby '. The structure of the song was great, the video was dorky fun. I wish it were included in a compilation already! My lower points were WTP (ok, fun and all) and Jimmy Jimmy (the only filler IMO, in the vein of LAV's Over and Over). This was a great step forward in her career, the album that sealed the connection with the Latinos...but just a preamble to one of the best albums ever Like a Prayer :)

ah, I looooove me some 80's Madonna! <3
"Jimmy Jimmy" gets a lotta hate, but I quite like it, especially the bridge:
"you're much too wild for this town there's not much here that's gonna hold you down you gotta lotta style it should take you far take you further than my back yaaaarrd..."
granted, when you're on the same album as epic tracks like "Papa Don't Preach", "Open Your Heart", and "True Blue", I guess most songs are bound to pale in comparison.

The singles on this album are FLAWLESS. One of, if not the best, run of singles from an album in her entire career.
Thankfully, the five singles make up over half the album, because the four remaining tracks are so mediocre. One of her weakest albums, elevated only by the amazing singles.

1. Papa Don't Preach 2. Open Your Heart 3. White Heat 4. Live To Tell 5. Where's The Party 6. True Blue 7. La Isla Bonita 8. Jimmy Jimmy 9. Love Makes The World Go Round It's been 25 years since this album was released in 1986. And it remains one of her most successful albums, as well as one of her best. The most fun pop album she ever made! It's pop perfection. Many fans didn't like her last two songs, but I actually love Jimmy Jimmy and Love Makes The World Go Round. Their bubbly pop songs that fit the theme so well. White Heat is my absolute favorite!

I actually don't care for this much despite all its success. Objectively, the singles were terrific, yet they're not ones I revisit much in her catalogue. Maybe I have to revisit them, but they never had much replay value for me despite being great songs. As for the non-singles, I like "Where's the Party" and "Jimmy Jimmy" well enough, but they're nothing special. Overall, of her 1980's albums, think Madonna and Like a Prayer are much superior, and I jam to songs off those all the time.

I liked it all and followed on the charts the release of each and every single and video and look. It was awesome. Great times. I still remember the very first time I heard La Isla Bonita. A DJ on the radio has received a copy of the album and played it all so this was months before Isla was actually a single. It was magic to my ears. I was excited to hear Love Makes... on Live Aid too. Perhaps I never thought it was her best song ever, but those days I would be in heaven with whatever she would release or picture i could get my hands on. I can listen to the full album yes, but I've gone back more often to LAV and M. Even though I liked Where's The Party, I never liked it 100% because of one small detail. The way she sings "Where's" in the 'where's the party' always bothered me... ha ha... what can I say... Other than than, I like the song.

Recently you were commenting somewhere else re the Melissa song. Tell me, was it released even before the Madonna album??? You know I had never heard the Melissa version until you posted it here. Was it a radio hit in Lima?? I had fun with Jimmy Jimmy, cute silly song. I prefer though Over And Over way more starting with its uplifting lyrics.
