1 Justin Bieber - Boyfriend ---> Canadian 2 Fun. - We Are Young (feat. Janelle Monáe) ---> American 3 Gotye - Somebody That I Used to Know (feat. Kimbra) ---> Australian (Gotye)/New Zealand (Kimbra) 4 Flo Rida - Wild Ones (feat. Sia) ---> Australian (Sia) 5 Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe ---> Canadian 6 One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful ---> British-Irish 7 The Wanted - Glad You Came --->British-Irish
Anyone else notice how international the top 7 is?
Just listened to Call Me Maybe since it was so high on itunes and OMG it's the worst song ever. She's terrible!!! The guy in the video is HAWT and the ending was funny so I give her props for that!!!!
Did Lana benefit at all from the American Idol promo? America is just not here for "Video Games"
She has been overhyped just like Sandi Thom was.
She has an interesting vocal styling and unique production choices on a handful of songs, I'll give her that. But all in all, "Born to Die" just didn't leap out at me. It certainly isn't worthy of all the unabashed hype that fueled it.

Better yet, underestimate Biebs' fans. I don't know why people use the act itself when it comes to saying how people underestimate so and so when it comes to radio, sales and the charts- the acts make the music and then the success of it primarily is in the hands of fans and radio.

Except he's always had a large and extremely devoted fan base. The song is absolutely exploding at radio, unlike his past singles, and that's helping it sustain it's sales. His fan base alone is not the reason the song is doing well.
Has it been determined that the track has had any kind of airplay promo this week? Would be weird for radio all of a sudden to be giving his new track so much play.

It's the lead single from arguably the first proper studio album (and certainly the first adult studio album) by potentially the new biggest artist in the world. The song is set to sell over 400k this week. I truly fail to understand how anyone could think it's weird that radio is playing it so much.

Umm it's not weird to think that a popular act who has never had radio airplay simply won't get radio airplay for the duration of their career especailly when they've had multiple big releases that went without major radio airplay. Justin has been big in mainstream pop culture and a big album seller for years and couldn't buy a Top 10 hit at pop radio. At one point he had two albums in the Billboard 200's Top 10 and even top 5 for weeks and weeks and JB got saw no major radio action for any of his singles. Now all of the sudden they are showing him love. The bottom line is the song is better than everyone had expected and radio programmers have decided to give it out of the gate airplay this time around.

He was what, 15 or 16 when the My World albums/EPs came out? He wasn't being played because of ageism. Again, for those who do not think ageism is an issue at US radio, do list the acts in their mid-teens who have scored top 10 hits on pop in the last decade. I'm waiting...
So without airplay it would only be selling 1/3 of what it is now?
The haters underestimate biebs.
I'm not underestimating anyone. I'm just going by his story. Under normal circumstances I would be against his song doing well but in this case I am rooting for him. In fact there were several other instances where I liked his song just fine and thought singles of his had underperformed because of the artist inovlved and not based on the quality of the music itself.
The bottom line is Justin Beiber had never proven himself to be able to get strong radio airplay. It's not illogical that people would think he couldn't now either. It's not totally illogical to go by an artists chart history to see if they can and will be able to perform in the future. Billy made it seem like it was totally illogical to expect Justin to do as well as he had done previously.

Why limit it to just Pop radio? Pop radio is not US Radio. it's just Pop radio. Maybe a more accurate statement is Pop radio is ageist Soulja Boy. Again Pop is just one format in the US radio scene. I think it's a fallacy to equate Pop radio with US radio.
