From the title I was expecting and uptempo. I don't know how I feel about to ballads in a row, but it actually sounds good. Nice debut.

Scotty McCreery Discusses New Single
As you know, Scotty McCreery releases a new single today called “The Trouble With Girls,” which is the second single from his much-anticipated debut album, Clear As Day, due Oct. 4.
“It’s a really sweet song,” Scotty says. “I played it for my sister and I said, ‘Would you like to hear what’s said in this song?’ She said, ‘I would love to have a guy say some of this stuff to me.’
“It’s talking about how great they are and it’s tough for the guy to handle because he just loves it. It has a nice twist to it. It’s like the songwriters wrote it just for me.”
The chorus of the song, written by Phillip White and Chris Tompkins, is, “They smile that smile/ They bat those eyes/ They steal you with hello/ They kill you with goodbye/ They hook you with one touch/ And you can’t break free/ Yeah, the trouble with girls/ Is nobody loves trouble as much as me.”
“The Trouble With Girls” is one of Scotty’s favorites on his new album.
“Right off the bat when I heard it, I told my mom when we were listening to the demo, ‘This is the kind of song when you are in the kitchen doing dishes that makes you stop what you are doing and listen to it.’ It struck a chord with me and I knew it was something I wanted to put on the album.”
This song is the follow-up to “I Love You This Big,” a Top 15 hit that had the highest debut on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for a new artist’s first single since at least 1984.

This might take a few listens to grow on me, but it sounds great. Also, to the thread starter, can you edit the thread title and capitalize "With"? It's causing my OCD to flare-up. Sorry.

I like this song, somewhat. However, this irks me.
"The trouble with girls is their so dang pretty, Everything about 'em does something to me, But I guess that’s the way it's supposed to be."
I don't know.

I don't know. Why does that part irk you? Women are always a mystery. I may have tried to write mystery instead of the "pretty" line if I was the writer but I get what they're saying here.

I just want to say that I really enjoy this song. It will be a great follow-up to ILYTB. Upon listening, I had myself humming the part where he sings "They smile that smile They bat those eyes" as if I had heard a similar tune before. It finally clicked.. Cher - Believe in the middle of the song "I need time to move on I need love to feel strong" I dunno.. not a big deal I suppose, but I knew it reminded me of something!

Wow, I guess I'm in the minority here, but I don't think this is very good at all. I think his phrasings, especially on the first verse, are a bit rough. It seems like he's trying to put too much emphasis on his twang or something. The tempo of the second verse works a lot better and he does sounds much more natural on the rest of the song. The soft piano-driven intro is nice too, but overall though I just don't care for it.
As far as chart prospects go, I'm not sure what to expect here. It's definitely better than his last effort, but it's very tough to forecast how this will do. I don't think this sounds like a #1 song, and not just because I don't like it. But I could see it making the top 10, or I could see it peaking in a similar place to his first single. If some other newcomer's name was attached to this, I could see it topping out in the 25-35 range that has become a newcomer boneyard of late, but with Scotty's popularity I doubt that will be the case.

"Wow, I guess I'm in the minority here, but I don't think this is very good at all."
I guess we are both in the minority. I think the production is annoying-too overpowering and not country enough.
The lyrics are too old fashioned, seems like they are catering to older fans ideas of what teens like- "Bat their eyes"?
He doesn't sing it very well either, IMO. I actually think that Big song (although lyrically simplistic) sounded better vocally and musically.
But I'm sure it will be a hit, the label is behind him and people love Scotty.

Personally I really like it, surprisingly, since I wasn't too nuts about him on the show.

ANYTHING is better than the tragedy that is I Love You This Big.
This, however, is a very, very large step forward. I'm not all too nuts about two ballads being released on top of one another, and I never have been for any artist (including Carrie), but it's still a single that will be more than capable enough to carry him through his album release.
Looks like Mercury got their heads on straight and are going to move forward from I Love You This Big and (hopefully) Like My Mother Does from Lauren.

I wonder if he's gonna get to perform this at the CMA awards? I know Carrie got to perform JTTW at the CMAs the year she won. If he does that would really give the song a boost when it'll probably already be at least in the top 25.
If he was going to go for a ballad I really would have liked "Clear as Day" as that song has some powerful emotional lyrics in it and sounds like a career song. Maybe it could be his 4th single cause I'm sure the 3rd one will be upbeat.
I'm satisfied with this song cause it shows more of the unique colors of his great voice. Hes one I'm sure we'll be hearing for years to come.

You make some good points here. Eye-batting, as you seem to know, was incredibly big in the days before the French revolution. Dear Abby and other advice columnists advised young women to bat their way to romantic success as late as the mid-1960's. But it does seem a bit dated now. Let's hope this is a hit before he rolls out something even weaker. By his 10th single, he should be onto tooth flossing as an indicator of confusing and ambiguous romantic feelings.

I listened to this. Well part of it. I had to turn it off because I disliked it so much. I love Scotty, I really do, but he needs better material. "I Love You This Big" was bad, but I definitely like it more than this. Maybe I was missing something when I listened the other day, maybe it will grow on me, but on first listen (to first verse and first chorus), it is awful. I'm really hoping that his album is better than the three songs I've heard from it.

I actually like I Love You This Big even though I find it a little corny. He's got a great voice but it's hard for me to take him seriously because he looks so much like Alfred E. Neuman.

Looks shouldn't matter as much as they do. I mean we have had some "not perfect looking" people make it in the past who became hitmakers just cause of music alone. But when music went from primarily radio to video to now viral, if you don't look like a model it downplays your music! An extreme example is not cause of looks but race. If people in the 60s had known of Charlie Pride's color before he got a couple hits under his belt he'd of never been given a chance. I've heard Charlie himself say this in interviews. RCA purposely hid that fact in the beginning. So what if Scotty looks like Alfred E Newman? Dolly Parton looks like a blonde Betty Boop! Some people have told me they can't stand to watch Reba sing cause of the movements she makes with her jaw but they still love hearing her CDs. It shouldn't matter what an artist looks like if their music can touch somebody. Its quite shallow for anyone to allow their judgement of someone's music based on an artists look. I mean how many overweight people have awesome voice who never get heard because of that? Its very sad to think looks are what it has come to in judging how to take an artist seriously.

^ Very well said ctryfan1980.
I have no problem with Scotty's looks. I don't see how anyone can, he's pretty easy on the eyes, tbh.
