Today I'm obsessed with "Strange Relationship" from Sign 'O The Times. Goddamn it's good.

This was gorgeous. My favorite tribute thus far. D'Angelo is one of the few living artists that I think can even embody a part of Prince's genius.

This legit scared me/kind of pissed me off at first, until I read this part. It sounds like the people closest to him in life are going to make a concerted effort to do things as he would have wanted them, at least to the best of their knowledge and ability. Certain things here and there also give an indication that Prince was consciously going about doing things, or letting people know what he planned to do, so that they would know what to do in the event of his death. This makes everything feel so surreal to me again. I just can't believe he's gone.

Welp...this finally gives me a reason to go to Minneapolis since I skipped my fraternity brother's wedding (his wife is from there).

I caught the last showing of Purple Rain in Manhattan tonight (at the E 19th Street theater). It was such an experience. I went with my fraternity brother and two of my friends and the theater was full of positivity! Cheering happened before the movie even started, after every musical performance and of course at the end. People sang along, clapped along, had hilarious commentary or laughter during the ridiculous parts...it was just amazing. During his performance of Purple Rain, I sobbed like a baby and didn't give AF.

How many days has it been? Feels like forever. Ok I admit it, it's difficult. The saying that the good die young rings very true with his loss. I mean he was like family in a way. Always there for me. His songs have calmed me and excited me. So strong yet so fragile of a man. I listened to Purple Rain all week and have discovered some of his older works and latest albums. Saying he was a genius or any other praise is an understatement. He gave so much of himself and allowed us to search his and our own inner soul. Such a raw talent. They say he was shy and private but to me his lyrics are open and honest and real. It helps to know his best work is yet to come. It was a shock then and its reality now. I think we can now remember him and smile at the same time. Kind of like his sheepish grin. Time heals they say but God I miss him.

Does anybody know why Prince didn't shoot a video for "Pop Life"? He didn't want to do any promotion or videos for the ATWIAD album due to worry about oversaturation; he thought people might be "tired of looking at him". Notice RB wasn't even released as the first single until after the album dropped and I'm sure Warner then pressured him into shooting a video for it. It's also been long speculated that he was trying to dial back the Prince persona in order to set the stage for Camille, which was supposed to be released the following year.

I am still digesting a lot of his music in the wake of his death. I was always a fan (my favorites being "If I Was Your Girlfriend," "Erotic City," and "Alphabet St"), but I have been listening to songs I hadn't listened to in awhile, and also seeking out some stuff of his I hadn't heard before (for instance, I didn't know he covered "I Can't Make You Love Me").
My favorite discovery to this point has been "Girls & Boys." Man is that one some funky as* fun!
My favorite re-discovery has been "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore." I hadn't listened to it in awhile for some reason, but it's bluesy and that vocal is out of this world.

Alicia did a pretty decent karaoke version of How Come...on her debut. One of the best songs on her debut, to be honest, which just further speaks to his legacy and power. What I need to do is dust off the Parade and Sign O' The Times albums. My mom had both of those on vinyl but outside of Sign O' The Times (the song), Adore, U Got The Look, If I Was Your Girlfriend, Starfish & Coffee, Kiss, and Sometimes It Snows In April, I don't really remember those albums too well. I just purchased 1999 on vinyl recently. Lordt, that album is ALMOST better than Purple Rain. Automatic (HEEYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!), Let's Pretend We're Married, Lady Cab Driver, International Lover...too much.

Purple Rain is a near perfect album, but it unfortunately overshadows the fact that he made at least 3-4 other great albums in Dirty Mind, 1999, Sign O' The Times (though critics recognize this one), and maybe Parade.

I'm in the minority with feeling like 1999 is damn near perfection and Purple Rain is first runner up. In other news: *taps out*

No shade but does Sinead even have $5 million to sue for? The kneejerk reaction of a lawsuit makes Arsenio look guiltier than what she actually said - it's not like anyone was about to take her seriously. (Or like Arsenio has enough of a remaining brand for her to defame.)
Albums - Sign o' the Times takes the crown for me. Purple Rain probably second just for the ubiquity, but 1999 is certainly flawless....his '80s run is really just incomparable.

There's 3 scopes of Prince's run of perfection for me.
If you set the focus to absolute intensity, it runs from Dirty Mind through Lovesexy.
If you relax it a bit, it goes through 1992's Love Symbol album, which I think is one of his most underrated and a fantastic showcase of not only his versatility and forward thinking (I mean, the Trance influences on I Wanna Melt With U? When the mainstream was still trashing it and would for years, including future fangirl Madonna), but also the NPG working well as a unit, much more than on D&P.
Then if you relax it a little more and accept that Come is more of stylistic exercise meant to be a stopgap until the next album and not really that much below the Graffiti Bridge or Batman STs, it goes through The Gold Experience from 1995. Purple Rain for the 90s is a good description of it, but nobody was really asking for it at the time once the bricks from the Alt. Rock & Hip-Hop revolutions had fully fallen. It's still an extremely strong album though and single handedly outdoes his output in the 4 years following imo.
Sign 'O' The Times has been my 2nd favorite album of all time behind Rumours for ages by now, so that's my top one. After that, the sheer tightness of the Purple Rain soundtrack is probably unmatched. Then on, it's probably Dirty Mind next, but like I said at the start anything from 1980 through 1988 is perfection for me (I overlook the decision to jam all of Lovesexy into one track on the CD, cause I bought my copy in Europe where they didn't do that). I sometimes find myself underrating Controversy in particular, because it's similar to Dirty Mind and isn't above it or refined the way that Parade is to Around The World In A Day. On it's own though, easily absolutely solid the whole way through. That's just how good he was for so long.

Since I know that there are some MJ and Prince fans here, I thought I'd place this article here. It's a LONG read, but certainly a great reflection on these two creative geniuses.
Not trying to start any type of fan war as I love and respect both of these incredible artists (though, obviously, I do like one more than the other). The author seems to know his facts, which I appreciate...

I need to listen to Parade and Around The World in a Day again. I haven't listened to those since they were released. I gave Sign O' The Times a spin again last night while cooking dinner. Aside from some extremely stellar tracks (title track, U Got The Look, If I Was Your Girlfriend, Starfish & Coffee, Adore, Strange Relationship, and Slow Love), I find it to have a good amount of filler (basically, every track I didn't name). In reading about it, I understand why people like it so much but Purple Rain and 1999 were completely filler-free and I can listen to them all day, every day in their entirety so I will always place them heads and shoulders above that album. It's just not really my cup of tea.

I've got a 40-song Prince collection in my iTunes playlists... I couldn't narrow it down to 20 even if I tried. He has a lot of what I consider high-calilber songs that are undeniably great and critically acclaimed, but I don't necessarily want to listen to them the often. "Kiss" and "1999" are two examples of this for me. It could just be due to them being overplayed and I've grown tired. But I can't not include them (among many others) so I had to bump it up to 40. Lol.
So. much. greatness.

I do agree that Purple Rain is filler-free. 1999 not quite as much for me - but still one of his best albums front to back.

Oh snap, I forgot I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man. That is one of my favorite Prince songs too. Also, my list is shot to hell anyway because I have to add Automatic and Let's Pretend We're Married in the top 10 so...

She's always been extremely outspoken, but I find it hard to believe Prince was a hard drug user. Especially considering he was a devout Jehovah's Witness, they're not even allowed to smoke cigarettes.
