The version on the CD was pre-recorded version. However, Whitney did not lip that. Whitney sang live in that performance.
Kelly did a good job. However, to me, Whitney's version is much better.

I'm sure the Kelly stans on this board know the answer, but Kelly has done the national anthem televised before right? Didn't she do it for a World Series game at some point? I have a recording of her singing it very differently and I totally preferred her earlier rendition, although last night was very good.

Whitney's version will always be the best of all time. That said, Kelly's version was flawless and she deserves major props for singing it live.

I have a recording of her singing it very differently and I totally preferred her earlier rendition, although last night was very good. She's sung the anthem live on TV several times before. She had settled into a particular rendition for a few performances in the style she did for the World Series, and recently changed it to more how she did at the Superbowl with her performance at the NBA finals last year.

Would this question even be coming up anywhere else? Damn Kelly is overrated here. I'm not a Whitney fan but I agree that Whitney defined how the song should be sung. Even after 9/11, people looked to her song for comfort and patriotism when it was 11 years old. It's now 22 years old and it's still coming up. Will people be bringing up Kelly's rendition 22 years from now? Doubtful. Exactly, this isn't even close. Whitney is the standard, there is no competition.

Whitney's is better. Even if she did lipsync, she still had to record it at some point. I absolutely adore Kelly's and hope that it is held in the same manner Whitney's version does twenty years from now.

The thing with Whitney's rendition is that it has become so iconic and celebrated that it will forever be untouchable, almost no matter what. As I said, judging strictly by the overall rendition, I think Whitney's is better than Kelly's, but it's almost besides the point. Whitney and the national anthem feels the same to me as Michael being the King of Pop and Madonna the Queen of Pop--those are titles that the artists earned and will never be taken away from them, just as Whitney will "always" have the best national anthem. She didn't earn that title immediately, just as Michael and Madonna didn't, but over time as their superiority became more obvious, no one challenged it immediately, timing, and nostalgia and accolades grew. Whitney's rendition is perfect and the arrangement is so well suited for her voice and for such a dramatic rendition and moment, but it's also had 20+ years to marinate and resonate with viewers and build the reputation it has today. It is untouchable, and not only because of the actual vocals.
But I think, as a music site, it's perfectly fair and expected to create polls like this when someone comes along and does a stellar job--live, no less--and offer up a comparison for argument's sake. I voted for Whitney, but Kelly's performance was certainly strong enough to warrant a discussion.

Whitney lip synching tells me that she has no confidence she could do it well live. I don't care for lip synched performances at all and I wish it was banned altogether, so Kelly wins easily. She sang it live at her Welcome Home Heroes concert and as far as I'm concerned that was just as great as the Superbowl version. Everyone lipped it back then, it was required. Kelly's performance is no where close to Whitney's.

^^ I wholeheartedly disagree with you. I voted for Whitney's version for more reasons than its general acclaim--- the power, the soul, the patriotism, the thunderous command, the immaculate tone and bravado. But Kelly's is an equally viable candidate and I think saying otherwise is blinded by the sheer mass of Whitney's acclaim.
Yes, it was superior in my opinion, but that doesn't mean Kelly's doesn't boast similar qualities and I think after 20 years of recognition, I have no doubt it will be nearly as revered as Whitney's.

Kelly's version will not be on the same level as Whitney's in 20 years. lol Whitney's had a poignancy because she performed it a week into the Gulf War. Kelly's is.. a good version?? There's nothing about it that will have people referring to it as an iconic version of the national anthem.

I just think it will be respected and acknowledged, especially following Christina's mess. Sort of a return-to-form. I do think it will be noted as one of the best... and I do think Whitney's will always be THE best.

But who even talks about any version other than Whitney's? I honestly couldn't even name another one off the top of my head without being told. There are good and there are not so good renditions. Then there's Whitney's, which is in a league of its own.

I don't think people generally think/care/talk about various renditions of the national anthem. Every year people either rave or trash whoever sang it, and then quickly forgets about it. I remember three years ago people were saying JHud's rendition was a new classic, potentially on par with Whitney's, etc. etc. and now it's barely remembered.

And Melanie Amaro will sing it at next year's, and we will have this conversation all over again.

Whitney's version is in the Top 200 in iTunes now.
This is actually her most recent Top 10 hit. It went to #6 right after 9/11.

Not to take away from Kelly's fine performance, but Whitney did it far better.

Whitney remains the definitive interpreter of "The Star Spangled Banner" (at least in our time).

It's weird that she was alive when this discussion was started...
So surreal, I'm still in shock.
She'll always have the best version of the National Anthem.
