Interview: Karmin Talks 'Pulses' LP, Miley Cyrus' Twerking And Advice From KanyeJohn Kennedy Posted September 5, 2013 Karmin has a few things to prove. 1) The bubbly duo—made up of Amy Renee Heidemann and Nicholas Louis "Nick" Noonan—is not a talentless sensation culled from the depths of YouTube. 2) The group is about more than popular cover songs and karaoke rap. And 3) Karmin is not a gimmick. From the moment Karmin signed to L.A. Reid’s Epic Records in June 2011, the married producer-and-rapper pair were peered at through squinted eyes. Their video renditions of songs like Chris Brown’s “Look At Me Now” and Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass” were cute, but could the Berklee College of Music alums become a force in pop’s glitzy waters? After warming up with the Hello EP, the 26-year-old Tauruses are gunning to become a fixture on top 40 radio with their full-of-surprises debut LP Pulses (out later this year). On the tail-end of a promo run in New York City, Karmin sits down to speak about the new album, working with reggae legend Shaggy and advice from Kanye. —John Kennedy VIBE: It’s been a long time coming for your first full-length album, Pulses. What was the process of recording this one? Did you start fresh after the EP dropped, or save the special tracks for your proper debut?Nick: Yes, it is a long time coming. The EP that came out last year was supposed to be the first album, so we had a lot of other material that we wanted to get out. Amy: But none of it made it. We went back into the studio and everything was better. Nick: There were a couple of ideas for what might be the next single [that] Amy wrote probably before we even started Karmin. So we tried to revisit some old stuff. Actually Kanye was the one who told us to do that. He remembered doing “Jesus Walks” [before he blew up] and being booed off stage. So he was like, Dude, you might have some shit that you don’t even know. [“Jesus Walks”] was one of his I’m-here statements. We had a different [mindset] from the EP. It wasn’t all happy go lucky like we had just come from winning the lottery, all of a sudden having all this attention. Now it’s real—we’ve gotta make some fucking music. How does Pulses differ from the Hello EP sonically?Amy: Sonically, it’s more cohesive. The EP was like, here’s a Stargate track that sounds like “Spaceships!” And here’s one that’s Dr. Luke-sounding! We have some things that resembled what we have now; we still worked with Jon Jon. Those recording sessions are always magical—that guy is so talented. He came up under Rodney Jerkins so he’s got that vibe. Nick: It’s probably harder. Sonically it’s a little harder. It’s more aggressive. There’s more content where she’s saying something. You scored a collaboration that no one would see coming—with Shaggy. How did that happen? Amy: We’re doing an interview and they’re like, who do you want to work with? And we were like, Shaggy. They’re like, why don’t you ask him right now on camera? Nick: We do this whole thing, like, Shaggy, wherever you are, give us a call. They end up playing that clip and one of his friends saw it. Amy: They’re like dude, this group is calling you out. They want you to work with them. We DM’d each other. I emailed the track and he sends it back two days later. Nick: He’s like, I love this! Amy: And that’s how we connected with everybody—Missy Elliott is on there, we’re talking. It’s like, the coolest thing ever. I’m like, I love you! She’s probably creeped out at this point. Ah, the power of Twitter. Speaking of creeped-out moments, Miley Cyrus caught a storm of backlash for her raunchy performance at the VMAs. Did you feel that it was warranted? Nick: So this is how I feel about this: She’s a white girl, and a lot of stuff she’s doing when she came out with “We Can’t Stop”—it was just the visual, that it was culturally inaccurate or culturally incorrect because she was dancing like a black girl. Whatever, who even knows what that means. But we kind of get the same thing a lot because Amy is white and she raps very aggressively. It’s not a Ke$ha style or anything, it’s just not the same type of thing. So we’re the last people to pass judgement on that. But that being said, when we were watching it I was definitely like—I think the reason people are mad is because it’s like, trying so hard, maybe. I don’t know. Amy: There’s something that doesn’t feel authentic about it. Maybe it’s just going to take time. Maybe we’re going to have to watch more of those before we get it. It just doesn’t feel honest. Nick: It’s pretty intense. Everybody was blushing. Amy: People were worried that their kids were watching. She had a hit song so she’s doing well. She’s definitely laughing all the way to the bank. Do you think that there’s a line you have to walk when dabbling into hip-hop culture to avoid that kind of backlash?Amy: We did feel like that a little bit with the last record. There were producers who were like, can you rap more girly? And I’ve even had producers—I’m not going to say any names—pull my pitch up and we’d get these mixes back, like, what is this? This doesn’t even sound like us. So it’s definitely like a male/female thing happening in the industry. And that’s why the Miley thing is sensitive to me. Like, she’s a girl. Robin Thicke was grabbing everybody, too. Why is there a double standard? She was really just dressed like the girls in his video. That was the whole creative. What do you think about the overall state of pop music? And is your mission to disrupt that, bring your own sound or try to fit in?Nick: Our mission right now is to find our lane. There aren’t a lot of male female duos out right now on top 40, not the way that we have it. It’s pretty unique. Amy: We just don’t want to have to compete with anybody. Most of the charts that we’ve been seeing in the past year or two have been really interesting. Like, here’s an indie rock hit, and here’s Macklemore, and here’s Rihanna doing a ballad with some guy you’ve never heard of. It’s amazing, the door is wide open for creative music right now where I don’t think it was a couple years ago. Like, if you weren’t doing four-on-the-floor dance pop, you didn’t have a spot. So we’re ready to grab the bull by the horns. You never see a guy singing and a girl rapping and they’re in the same group and they’re a couple. So the goal isn’t necessarily to disrupt what’s going on, I love what’s going on. I love that Pharrell’s back. He’s one of our favorites of our entire lives. Nick: He was one of the biggest influences, probably. You’re going to hear the acoustic scratches, there’s live instruments on every track, we always have a band come in and play bass drums and guitar. So we want to kind of get that feel way more than the first EP. Do you guys know what the next single is going to be yet? Amy: We do, but we can’t tell you or we’d have to kill you. Nick: I’m singing through the verses, she raps. It’s kind of like a duet feel. I definitely have some of that throwback—almost like a punk rock energy into it. Amy: And the lyrics compare being in a relationship to being in prison. It’s Nick’s introduction to the world. Is there a song that came out this summer that you wanted to cover? Nick: Oh, yeah, there were a lot dude. Amy: On Instagram, we do Karmin mini covers. We did “Blurred Lines.” Nick: “Get Lucky” would’ve been a lot of fun. Any of the Pharrell stuff is always fun because it’s so musical that you can go so many different genres with it. Amy: Maroon 5’s “Love Somebody,” I thought that was a nice song. It would be fun to remix that and rap on it.

OMG, the label is dropping the ball so hard on this. Why wasn't a single sent out immediately when "Acapella" started falling? After the success of "Brokenhearted," this is frustrating.

It had a release date before?? December 10. Gee, Josh, I had no idea that was three days from December 7! But when was that confirmed jw? Anyway, I don't see the April date anywhere but Wikipedia, which makes me figure that's not confirmed either. OMG, the label is dropping the ball so hard on this. I'm still pissed Acapella didn't become a smash like Brokenhearted and I'm pissed they are quickly becoming another Epic Records fumble-turned-casualty.

They won one ("Video of the Year") out of their four Boston Music Awards nominations (other nods: Artist of the Year, Pop Artist of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year)! Additionally, " Sleigh Ride" is beginning to get some radio spins since it's the holiday season!

That 12/10 date was from way back in September from a label release sheet I received. Those dates are never set in stone, I moved that to "TBA" a short while back.

Wow, this is infectious! I'm loving the throwback vibe; it's such a pleasant surprise considering how underwhelming "Acapella" was.

I Want It All is so damn good. Just wow.
They really need to find another label. They are too damn good to be mishandled like they are now. #FreeKarmin

Creative freedom ‘Pulses’ through KarminFriday, January 31, 2014 PrintEmailBe the first to comment By: Jed Gottlieb Things happened fast for Berklee duo Karmin after landing a record deal from Epic in 2011. A year after inking the contract, couple Nick Noonan and Amy Heidemann scored a Top 20 single (“Brokenhearted”), played the Jingle Ball at Madison Square Garden, won an American Music Award, made the cover of Rolling Stone, performed as the musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” and logged studio time with king-maker Dr. Luke — the writer/producer behind hits “Since U Been Gone,” “Party in the U.S.A.” and “Roar.” But what have they done lately? Not much. Well, that’s not exactly true. Last week, Karmin released “I Want It All,” a delicious disco pop tune with horns right out of a 1985 Miami Sound Machine jam. On Tuesday, the duo play the Paradise on their first headlining tour. But for a band that exploded in 2012, the last few months have been quiet. “We’ve found things are slowing down at this level,” Noonan said. “We used to shoot a video and put it up on YouTube right away. Now there are, well, layers to go through to get approval.” Karmin’s YouTube covers made them stars. The pair’s lo-fi version of Chris Brown’s “Look at Me Now” has 90 million views and was the site’s sixth most-viewed video of 2011. Now that Karmin has a label and a management team, shot-on-the-fly videos have been replaced by big-budget shoots of original songs. If Karmin’s first LP, the March-due “Pulses,” blows up, it will be on the back of original content. Karmin knows this, they want this. But losing total creative control hasn’t been easy — one thing slowing down their momentum has been repeated release delays for “Pulses.” “After we blew out of Boston, we were developing in public and didn’t know anything,” Heidemann said. “We knew music, but we didn’t know the industry. A lot has changed and not just my hair color.” The two are proud of their first EP, 2012’s “Hello.” They should be — “Brokenhearted” is a delightful pop single. But parts of the record sound like suits made too many of the decisions. Noonan and Heidemann promise “Pulses” has more of them on it. “Our past stuff has been cool, but we don’t want to sound like anyone else,” Noonan said. “Dance and house beats are great, but the new stuff will show we have more control and we call the shots ... I’ve done a lot of co-writing and co-producing on the album and we’ve worked with some really cool people. We did some crazy (expletive) with (electropop duo) 3OH!3.” “People were surprised when I wasn’t rapping on the new single,” Heidemann said. “On the new album, we’re doing a lot more than me rapping. Nick is singing more. We sound more like a duo now and it feels right.”

Epic Records' Karmin Hosts Listening Party At Their HomeJanuary 27, 2014 at 9:30 AM (PT) Ed Brown Hangs With Amy & NickAnother great night of entertainment last week (1/23) as EPIC RECORDS rolled out the red carpet to celebrate new music from KARMIN. The duo of NICK and AMY graciously opened their home, located just over the hill from HOLLYWOOD, to radio peeps from around the country to unveil new music from their upcoming album 'Pulses,' including the single ' I Want It All.' Drinks flowed and food was served to the guests who gathered in the spacious backyard of their newly remodeled home. The space was mood-lit to reflect their album's artwork. NICK explained to everyone that the property, originally built in 1939, is where the arrangement for BING CROSBY's 'White Christmas' was created. He added a little more history when he explained that home's original bar, which they kept intact, also served as a post-recording hangout for many singing stars of that era including CROSBY, LOUIS ARMSTRONG, FRANK SINATRA and eventually earned the nickname 'Stonehouse.' Joining ALL ACCESS' JOEL DENVER and ED BROWN, radio attendees included BEATA (KIIS), BRANDON BELL (KBIG), ERIK BRADLEY (WBBM), ERIC TYLER (KBKS), MAT MITCHELL (KZZP), JUSTIN RILEY (KKRZ), ROBERT SCORPIO (KGGI) and OTIS (WNKS). But the list doesn't end there. Trying to channel the spirits of SINATRA and CROSBY were JAMES PALOMARES (KFRH/KRCK), CHARESE FRUGE (KMXB), JOJO MARTINEZ (WMYX/WXSS), LEO BALDWIN and STICK (WNOU), JR AMMONS (WZPL), KEITH ALLEN (WMKS), BRODY (WLDI), CHRIS TAYLOR and JOE MACK (WHBQ). Still not done. Also soaking up the music and atmosphere were JB WILDE (WKSS), CHRIS PETERS (KRQQ/KMIY), BOB LEWIS (KDLW), JONATHAN REED (WNOK), SEAN STEWART (WDOD), CHUCK WHITAKER (WHHD), JAQUAY BANGS (KFYV/KCAQ), SCOTT DWYER (KKUU), THOMAS DEELO (WAEV) and also NELSON AGUIRRE and TANYA RADISAVLJEVIC from ON AIR WITH RYAN SEACREST). A big shout out and thank you to our hosts, KARMIN, along with EPIC's team including TODD GLASSMAN, BENNY POUGH, SANDRA AFLOAREI, SCOTT DIMIG, DIXIE TIPTON, RACHAEL SPANGLER, COURTNEY LOWERY and ROB GREGG for a fantastic night of fun under the stars.

"Night Like This" is written by Amy, Nick, Claude Kelly, Kyle Shearer, and Emily Wright ("Broken Hearted," several Owl City songs).
