:o I never realized how big of a hit In The Groove was. I didn't think it was even in her top 10 songs, let alone top 2.

Codex- "Into the Groove" didn't chart in 1985 because, supposedly, 12-inch singles weren't eligible for the Hot 100 at the time (it did chart on Hot Black Singles, however, reaching No. 19). The 12-inch single spent six weeks atop Variety's singles sales chart and shipped 600,000+ and it was a top 10 airplay hit at CHR/Pop. And ever since, it's endured as one of Madonna's most-played recurrent hits.
A reminder RE Mediabase- it's been tracking airplay since, I believe, early 1998.

^It did- "H.A.T.E.U." didn't appear on the Hot 100 or Bubbling Under charts. :) It did chart on R&B, though, at No. 72.

Recurrent airplay. Complicated and This Love are massive hits in HAC format. WBT is pretty big too, but RnB leaning songs tend to not have as much recurrent play. If you look closely, most of them are songs that are massive hits in HAC, and HAC hold onto a song for a long time. Plus, the massive hits got a lot of recurrent plays too, which mean that while they might not peak as massively as the likes of We Belong Together, they still accumulate tons of airplay over the year.

So you're saying that if Billboard counts recurrent airplay as a part of song's overall chart performance rather than cutting it off at the song's drop-out point, then Complicated or This Love or Faith Hill songs can have a shot for the top of the decade like We Belong Together or Yeah? Geez sometimes I just kinda lose faith on the chart stuff especially the chart from at least a decade ago.

Plus, "tons of airplay" is quite a hyperbole isn't it? Can anyone even find Complicated, This Love, Breathe or whatever in any sort of airplay chart in 2017? Maybe but barely, let's say 1-5m audience impression per week. Over say 10 years that's building up to 1,000-2,000m AI, massive peaking songs like Blurred Lines, We Belong Together or even Shape of You can pull that off in 2-3 months. I think the concept of "cumulative airplay" is like saying "best selling single" or most streamed song or video over the years where weighing or stations have changed and that's why the raw data seems jarring since it seems to me really skewed toward 2000-2003 era.

Massive is a relative term. That's quite a lot of airplay for a gold song. Of course current songs get more... that's why they're current.

Bumping a 5-year-old thread seems a little off to me...but with that kind of time gap, it might do to update the figures posted in here. Anyone care to give it a go?

^It did- "H.A.T.E.U." didn't appear on the Hot 100 or Bubbling Under charts. :) It did chart on R&B, though, at No. 72. I was referring to the recurrent AI airplay that the poster above posted. Not the Billboard chart position.

^"Oh Santa" hit No. 1 on AC, but the audience levels weren't as high as a non-holiday AC No. 1 would be. Plus, OS doesn't get all that much recurrent play around the holidays, with "All I want..." and "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home )" getting the levels they do.
Those posts were almost five years old. :)

Where are the data from this thread from? Bcharts? Is there a website where they update cumulative audiences of mediabase or BDS?
Any update on what the biggest airplay songs of the decade are?! I remember fhas posted a link in 2017
