1. CRUISE CONTROL: Florida Georgia Line continues to hold on to the #1 spot in country music with Cruise. They become the first duo since the Wreckers to take their debut single to #1 and stay there for more than a week. The Wreckers had a two week stay at #1 in 2006 with Leave The Pieces. In other F.G.L. news, they have the Hot Shot Debut this week at #52 with Get Your Shine On. 2. HE'S BACK: After peaking at #15 with Camouflage, Brad Paisley collects another top ten this week with Southern Comfort Zone at #10. 3. REMAKE TIMES TWO: Michael Buble took a song called Home to #72 on the Hot 100 while topping the adult contemporary chart in 2005. Blake Shelton remade the song in 2008, taking it to #1 country and #41 on the Hot 100. Together, they debut this week with a Christmas version at #57. 4. TRUCK YEAH: Lee Brice has the fastest climbing song of the week as I Drive Your Truck speeds seventeen to #36. 5. ANOTHER TOP 40 CHRISTMAS CD: Willie Nelson makes a top 40 appearance on the country album chart with The Classic Christmas Album at #31. 6. A.C.A. A CORRECTION: I had stated in my John Denver story a couple of weeks ago that he did NOT release any CDs from 1988's Higher Ground until 1997's The Best Of John Denver Live. Not so. He released four studio CDs: 1. Earth Songs-1990 2. The Flower That Shattered The Stone-1990 3. Different Directions-1991 4. All Aboard-1997 Another live CD was released, The Wildlife Concert in 1995. Also, two compilation CDs were released: 1. Take Me Home, Country Roads And Other Hits-1991 2. The Very Best Of John Denver-1994 The four CD boxed set, The Country Roads Collection was released a few months before he died. So in all, another eight titles were released between 1988 to 1997. 1. F.G.L. CUBED: Florida Georgia Line has the #1 song for the third week with Cruise. This is the first time a duo had led the charts for that long with their first #1 since Howard and David Bellamy did so in 1979 with If I Said You Have A Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me. 2. HIS 11TH: Gary Allan returns to the top ten this week with Every Storm Runs Out Of Rain at #9. It is his eleventh top ten hit and first since Watching Airplanes peaked at #2 in early 2008. 3. ONE BETTER: At #12 is Taylor Swift with Begin Again. It is her second Red single following We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together which debuted and peaked at #13. 4. A FAST CHRISTMAS: Lady Antebellum has the fastest climbing song of the week as A Holly Jolly Christmas moves seven to #41. 5. THIRD WEEK OF CHRISTMAS: Blake Shelton is the Christmas king this year as he debuts two more titles from Cheers, It's Christmas. They are: 1. Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!-#57 2. Blue Christmas-with the Pistol Annies-#59 He is also on the chart with Miranda Lambert with Jingle Bell Rock (#37) and Home with Michael Buble (#53). 6. COUNTRY HOMES: Blake Shelton and Michael Buble are at #53 with Home while at #54 is Sarah Darling's Home To Me. 7. #1 HITS: These were the chart topping songs in 2007, 2002, 1997, 1992, and 1987: 2007: Our Song-Taylor Swift-Big Machine 2002: Who's Your Daddy-Toby Keith-Dreamworks 1997: Longneck Bottle-Garth Brooks-Capitol 1992: She's Got The Rhythm And I Got The Blues-Alan Jackson-Arista 1987: Do Ya'-K.T. Oslin-RCA 8. MILESTONE TOP TEN CHART: Even though it mentions Christmas (though it is NOT a Christmas song), our #1 song from 39 years ago this week managed to be a regular on country playlists during December for years. It was If We Make It Through December by Merle Haggard. The song itself was written by Haggard. I usually do not print lyrics to the songs I salute, but here they are: If we make it through December Everythings gonna be all right I know It's the coldest time of winter And I shivver when I see the fallin snow
If we make it through December I got plans of bein in a warmer town come summer time Maybe even California If we make it through December we'll be fine
I got laid off down at the factory And there timings not the greatest in the world Heaven knows I been workin' hard I wanted Christmas to be right for daddy's girl Now I don't mean to hate December It's meant to be the happy time of year And why my little girl don't understand Why daddy can't afford no Christmas here
If we make it through December Everythings gonna be alright I know It's the coldest time of winter And I shivver when I see the fallin' snow
If we make it through December I got plans of bein' in a warmer town come summer time Maybe even California If we make it through December we'll be fine
The song was inspired by a conversation Haggard had with his guitarist, Roy Nichols. Nichols had been married and divorced a number of times. Haggard was concerned about his guitar player and asked him if everything was all right. Nichols responded, "If we just make it through December." The song was born and it was released in October, 1973. It hit the top in December for four weeks, finally leaving in January, 1974. It became Haggard's third biggest hit after Mama Tried in 1968 and chart wise, his biggest hit, Okie From Muskogee in 1969. It became his ONLY top 40 pop hit when it peaked at #28. Billboard named it the second biggest hit of 1974 (Charlie Rich's There Won't Be Anymore was #1). It was the title track and ONLY single released from the album, which peaked at #4 in 1974. That was sandwiched between two chart topping albums: 1973's I Love Dixie Blues...So I Recorded 'Live' In New Orleans and 1974's Merle Haggard Presents His 30th Album. This is what the chart looked like back then:
BILLBOARD TOP TEN FOR WEEK ENDING DECEMBER 22, 1973: 1. IF WE MAKE IT THROUGH DECEMBER-MERLE HAGGARD-CAPITOL 2. Amazing Love-Charley Pride-RCA 3. If You Can't Feel It It Ain't There-Freddie Hart-Capitol 4. Somewhere Between Love And Tomorrow-Roy Clark-Dot 5. The Most Beautiful Girl-Charlie Rich-Epic 6. The Last Love Song-Hank Williams, Jr.-MGM 7. Let Me Be There-Olivia Newton-John-MCA 8. I Love-Tom T. Hall-Mercury 9. Love Me/Crawlin' On My Knees-Marty Robbins-MCA 10. You As Me To-Waylon Jennings-RCA
P.S.: Merry Christmas!

1. HIS LAST DAY: Justin Moore collects his third #1 hit with Til My Last Day. It follows Small Town USA (2009) and If Heaven Wasn't So Far Away (2011) as chart toppers. They are: 1. Baggage Claim-2011-#3 2. Over You-2012-#1 3. Fastest Girl In Town-2012-#3 8. SAY IT ISN'T SO: Considering this week is Christmas week, there are NO new Christmas songs entering the chart. 9. 7. COULD FOUR THE RECORD GO FOUR FOR FOUR?: Miranda Lambert debuts her fourth single from Four The Record at #54 this week. It is Mama's Broken Heart. Her first three singles from the CD broke top ten. They are: 1. Baggage Claim-2011-#3 2. Over You-2012-#1 3. Fastest Girl In Town-2012-#7 Using Hot Country Songs now? FGIT peaked at #3 on the Airplay chart but #7 on the new mongrel version of Hot Country Songs. 8. SAY IT ISN'T SO: Considering this week is Christmas week, there are NO new Christmas songs entering the chart. Well, the 1/5 chart is for the week ending the 23rd, so it doesn't count airplay on Monday and Tuesday this week. So when we see the next chart, there should be a pretty big handful of Christmas songs making a 1-week appearance.

Thanks for the Merle lyrics. The best country songwriter ever, maybe.

^ I meant the "new" as in "the one that Taylor is still at #2 on".

^ I meant the "new" as in "the one that Taylor is still at #2 on". In that case, I haven't got a clue. The old R&R link (from above) that still updates obviously only cares to update the airplay real chart. ;) I guess you can find the top 25 on the Billboard website. But that's still the 1/5 chart. The 1/12 chart won't come out until Thursday. I do believe that since Thursday is the 3rd, they will be starting up publication of the BCU again then, with the mid-week issue Thursday and then the first new Monday issue on the 7th.

1. GOODBYE #1: Well, after starting their current CD, Uncaged on a #11 note with The Wind, the Zac Brown Band scores their ninth #1 with Goodbye In Her Eyes. All of their CDs have yielded chart topping hits as The Foundation had four, You Get What You Give had four, and now Uncaged gets its first. 2. THE FIFTH WEEK OF CHRISTMAS: We have six Christmas songs entering the chart this week. They are: 44. There's A New Kid In Town-Blake Shelton and Kelly Clarkson-Hot Shot Debut 52. The Christmas Song-Blake Shelton 53. Jingle Bells-Scotty McCreery 54. The Very Best Time Of The Year-Blake Shelton and Trypta-Phunk 59. Let It Snow-Scotty McCreery 60. Go Tell It On The Mountain-Hunter Hayes 3. A TIE: We have two songs taking four point jumps for the week for fastest climbers. They are: 1. American Beautiful-the Henningsens-#47 to #43 2. Home-Blake Shelton and Michael Buble-#49 to #45 4. A 00S LOOK PART II: These were the top selling CDs during the first week of January during the 2000s: 2000: Come On Over-Shania Twain-Mercury 2001: Greatest Hits-Tim McGraw-Curb 2002: Scarecrow-Garth Brooks-Capitol 2003: Up!-Shania Twain-Mercury 2004: Shock'n Y'all-Toby Keith-Dreamworks 2005: Greatest Hits-Shania Twain-Mercury 2006: Some Hearts-Carrie Underwood-Arista 2007: Some Hearts-Carrie Underwood-Arista 2008: Long Road Out Of Eden-the Eagles-Lost Highway 2009: Fearless-Taylor Swift-Big Machine 5. MILESTONE TOP TEN CHART: If we had to pick a headline for this week's feature, it would be: MCENTIRE CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF #1S McEntire being Reba, of course and 30 years ago this week, she had the first of 25 chart toppers with Can't Even Get The Blues. Not Only does McEntire have singing in her blood thanks to her mother, Jacqueline but also rodeos thanks to her father, Clark. As a matter of fact, 2012 marked 40 years of McEntire being signed to the Boss label as part of the Singing McEntires with sister Susie and brother Pake (who had a quintet of top 40 hits between 1986 to 1987, the biggest being Savin' My Love For You-#3 in 1986). The McEntires would sing at rodeos, community centers, and clubs. Reba was a horseback barrel rider like her father. The McEntires stayed together until 1974 when Reba was singing the national anthem at the National Rodeo Finals in Oklahoma City. Red Steagall was in the audience and invited Reba to Nashville for a demo session. Steagall himself was a recording artist, placing seven singles in the top 40, the biggest being Lone Star Beer And Bob Wills Music (#11 in 1976). Steagall also introduced Reba to his Music City friends and that led Reba to sign with Mercury Records in 1975. In 1976, two pivotal events took place: 1. She married rodeo champion, Charlie Battles (later divorced in 1987). 2. Her debut album, a self-titled release was in stores. The first single, I Don't Want To Be A One Night Stand peaked at a very disappointing #88. Three more singles were released: 1. There's Nothing Like The Love Between A Woman And A Man-1977-#86 2. Glad I Waited Just For You-1977-#88 3. I've Waited All My Life For You-1978-did not chart While licking her wounds over what little attention her first album received, she enjoyed her first major hit, a duet with Jacky Ward called Three Sheets In The Wind (#20 in 1978) backed with I'd Really Love To See You Tonight. While that double-sided hit was on the charts, McEntire was readying album #2 called Out Of A Dream. A quintet of top 40 hits followed: 1. Last Night, Ev'ry Night-1978-#28 2. Runaway Heart-1979-#36 3. That Makes The Two Of Us-with Ward-1979-#26 4. Sweet Dreams-1979-#19 5. I Still Long To Hold You Now And Then-1980-#40 Her third album, Feel The Fire contained the first of 60 top tens when You Lift Me Up To Heaven peaked at #8. Two more major hits were produced when I Can See Forever In Your Eyes hit #18 in 1980 and I Don't Think Love Ought To Be That Way peaked at #13 in 1981. Album #4, Heart To Heart gave McEntire another career first. It was her debut on the country albums chart when it peaked at #42 in 1981 (six years after signing to Mercury!). Two major hits were produced: 1. Today All Over Again-1981-#5 2. Only You And You Alone-1982-#13 The Unlimited album in 1982 was the one that kicked McEntire's career to the next level. The first single became her biggest hit for the briefest time, I'm Not That Lonely Yet (#3). In September, Can't Even Get The Blues was released. It was an unusual release for her because it got her away from the ballads she was so used to doing. It was her most uptempo release to date. It hit the top of the chart during the first week of January. After 16 chart appearances over the course of seven years, McEntire became a chart topping artist. That fact was driven home when the third and final single, You're The First Time I've Thought About Leaving became her first ballad to top the chart. Changes were under way during ther second half of 1983. Mercury released the last album on McEntire, Behind The Scene. Two hits were produced: Why Do We Want What We Know We Can't Have-1983-#7 and There Ain't No Future In This-1984-#12. While she was on the chart with the former title, she signed to MCA Records. Her debut for them, Just A Little Love yielded the title track (#5 in 1984) and He Broke Your Mem'ry Last Night (#15 in 1984). Superstardom was around the corner as McEntire was transformed from just being a singles artist to being a major record seller and top concert draw. She won the C.M.A. Female Vocalist of the Year for four consecutive years (1984-1987). She also won the Entertainer of the Year Award in 1986. She married for the second time in 1989 to Narvel Blackstock. She became a mother in 1990 when son Shelby was born. She stayed with MCA until 2008 when she signed to the Valory label. She collected two chart toppers with them: 1. Consider Me Gone-2010-chart wise, her biggest hit and our #1 song three years ago this week 2. Reba and Kelly teamed up in 2007 for a #2 duet called Because of You. As for Can't Even Get The Blues, it is naturally the first song on her 2005 release, #1s.
