I haven't been keeping up with her for a while now, but apparently she's currently at the center of a few legal battles. Her ex-boyfriend and former manager is suing her for compensation of $250 million. Last month she sued two of her former employees for defamation and extortion amid reports of a sex tape being shopped around. And as if that wasn't enough, she's also rumored to be pregnant.

This era needs to start NOW! Seriously, she's performing at iHeartRadio next weekend and we still don't have a new single. I hope she's not pregnant, otherwise they might as well postpone this whole era.

Some of that has to be true or something else that we don't know cuz this is taking way too long.

Shakira AND Usher next season on The Voice! One season only deal with both Christina and Cee-Lo taking a break for one season and returning for season 5! Great exposure for Shakira... I guess the new album and single will be out next year then...

This is positive for Shakira because the US still is not familiar with her persona. It was long interviews that made people fall in love with Shakira in Latin America. This show will allow the US to get to know Shakira's unique persona. She's funny, witty and well-spoken.

The title is so Madonna-esque! If this is anything like "Confessions on A Dance Floor" or Oral Fixation I'm down for it!

Well no she must be doing The Voice because she know she won't have to travel to promote stuff or tour. If she's to do a show like this it's now while pregnant that she has to do it.

Exclusive for “COSAS”
Shakira
“I was able to realize my dreams.”
These days Shakira is creating her next album while she happily awaits her first son with Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué. In the meantime, she gave herself time to conduct this interview in which she also talks about her new fragrance, Elixir.
By: Manuel Santelices, Correspondent
Don’t be fooled by her blonde hair, short skirt and sexy dancing. As some of the most powerful men in the world have discovered, from Gabriel García Márquez, who once described her as “the creator of her own brand of innocent sensuality”, to President Obama, who last year invited her to the Oval Office to discuss the educational problems within the Hispanic community in the U.S., Shakira is a box of surprises that astonishes, amazes and seduces.
Famous since her adolescence, she was already an idol in Colombia before she even finished high school – the singer has overcome, without serious downfalls, all of the obstacles associated with fame in front of its chosen few these days. There have been mishaps along the way, of course, a bitter romance here or a small scandal there, but nothing has distracted her from her biggest passions: music & philanthropy.
Her romance with Spanish soccer idol, Gerard Piqué, and her recent pregnancy announcement, matters that would've catapulted any other person with less knowledge and experience into the inevitable abyss of tabloids, have been managed by her with a distinct discretion and, if we can say, even with a certain elegance that is admirable during these times of fakes & disgusting narcissists. When, a few moments after our telephone interview, we asked her via email her opinion about her future son, Shakira answered, via her representative, ‘thank you, but no’ and just like that our plead was put on a shelf of pleads not answered that she receives from so many journalists day by day.
Who could blame her? Her life has been dissected in the press for years, something that for an intelligent woman like her, a woman who has interests that go beyond shoes, photographs, contracts, magazine covers, boyfriends & even her own new album, could become tiresome and even frustrating. Being an empty celebrity has no value to Shakira, and perhaps because of that she has decided to put her celebrity status to work. In 1996 she created the Barefoot Foundation, partly to find a solution for her native Barranquilla, a city in caribbean Colombia where close to 50% of the population lives in poverty and 43% of its children don’t have access to education. These days, her mega-colleges, located throughout all of Colombia, serve almost 8,000 children.
Apart from her influential musical career and her considerable fortune, it has been her humanitarian work – she is also a Unicef goodwill ambassador – that has placed her, once again this year, on the list of the 40 most powerful women in the world according to Forbes magazine, an honor that she received in a very Shakira style, with a mix of pride, disbelief & responsibility.
The singer spoke with “Cosas” as part of her promotional campaign for Elixir, her second perfume that was recently launched to the market. And that was, obviously, the first subject that we touched on with her during our conversation.
“I’M ENCHANTED BY THE WORLD OF AROMAS”
Where did the name Elixir come from?
Shakira: I chose it. It means magical potion, of course. Elixirs were used in ancient times with distinct purposes, and one of those was the inducement of love. It seems to me that the final purpose of a fragrance is to attract, to have feeling without major effort.
Seduction in a bottle?
Shakira: Of course, it has a lot of seduction and is, above all, very sexy. It also has personality and very velvety aspect, and that makes people want to get closer and smell more. It’s an aroma that is both diurnal and nocturnal.
Does making a perfume seem like an extension of your art or is it simply a commercial opportunity?
Shakira: I have always been a very olfactory-driven person; I am enchanted by the world of aromas, tastes and smells. For a long time I looked for a fragrance that felt more like a second skin and I didn’t find it until I developed by own perfume. That is the biggest advantage: to be able to create exactly what you were looking for that you couldn’t find anywhere else. That is what happened in my case. I was able to experiment with the olfactory notes that attract me the most, and along the way I discovered the world of fragrances which is fascinating to me and, that in some way, is also like the musical world. Creating a perfume and creating music have things in common.
“I AM AN OPTIMIST”
Not too long ago you appeared, once again, as one of the 40 most powerful women in the world on Forbes’ list. What significance does that have for you? What would you like to do with that power?
Shakira: I’ve always been conscientious of the fact that a person that is exposed to fame and the public eye should carry with them the responsibility to utilize that influence in the best way possible. There are issues that are very close to my heart, such as bringing quality, universal education to all of the children that are in areas of conflict, in vulnerable situations and in extreme poverty. That is one cause for which I work for every day through the Barefoot Foundation and the ALAS Foundation. I strive to redirect the attention that is focused on me and move it toward this cause that is much more important than I am and even more important than my music.
Of all of the conflicts and societal problems, why did you decide to focus on this one?
Shakira: Because education is one of the issues which, through societal inversion, it is possible to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I am an optimist; I have faith in the human race, I have faith that the world can strive for something better and it seems to me that, after the industrial revolution and the democratization of education, we have come to the place that we are at today with so much knowledge and technological advances. It seems to me that there is much more ahead of us. Millions and millions of children are outside of the primary and secondary school system, and they have to utilize the opportunities and the tools that we should all have to achieve a dignified life. Education is an extraordinary vehicle with which we can obtain a society that is more just and prosperous, a weapon that we should utilize. The political and economic leaders have to dedicate themselves to this cause if we really want a globalized and peaceful world.
I don’t want to push you toward current issues but this interview will be published in Chile and I would like to know if you have an opinion on the student conflict…
Shakira: It is a very complicated issue and one has to be there, be Chilean, and live in the country to be able to opine. Even so, I would say that in spite of the discrepancies and the misinformation that can exist at any given time in society, the most important thing is to maintain united and to never forget that we are all brother, Chileans, and that we must think, above all, of the common good.
BEYOND THE FACADE
You’ve talked about your own education in the past, the school with nuns in Barranquilla where you liked to belly dance…how were you during your time as a student? What did the nuns think about you?
Shakira: I was a very impatient girl, very creative and I had great desires to go out into the world and show my capabilities and my potential. My parents played a fundamental role in all of that because they always supported me and they dared to dream with the same desire as me. I was able to realize my dreams, but it was also because I received a quality education in spite of the distinct economic moments that my family faced, some good and others not so good. My father might have had problems, but education was something that we never absent and something that made a huge difference in my life. Material objects can come and go, but knowledge is an incomparable treasure.
You were raised in a Latin American country and in an Arabic family, two male-dominated cultures. How did that affect your life?
Shakira: In one way or another, in such a competitive industry and with how difficult the music industry is, and in the same way that it occurs in any other profession, a woman has to demonstrate her capabilities constantly. She has to convincingly demonstrate that there is more to her than her exterior, than the façade; she has to convince everyone else of her potential, transcend all of the prejudices and demonstrate what she’s made of. In these situations I relied on the support of my family and that was my best tool to achieve what I have up until today.
Does the fact that you are beautiful, sexy and exploit your sensual side a bit, bring people to confuse who they think you are with who you really are?
Shakira: I think that a woman doesn't confuse, she intrigues. A woman who enjoys thinking, analyzing and sharing her opinion will always be heard. There will always be a man that is interested in listening to you, especially if you know something about soccer! In that instance, all of the men listen to you.
What can you say about your next album? What distinguishes it from the previous ones?
Shakira: I am in the middle of the creative process and also of trying many different things. In this moment, I am concentrated on writing lyrics, and that is a part of the process that requires a lot of concentration on my part. I spend a lot of time in finding the words that best relay what I want to transmit; perhaps it is something that all of my albums have in common. On the musical side, I always want to evolve through different sounds, investigate different rhythms, and work with different artists. There are a lot of people with a lot of talent with whom I enjoy sharing this process.
What interests you at this moment in terms of popular culture? What are you reading, watching or listening to?
Shakira: I am reading two books at the moment, one is “History of Art”, by E.H. Gombrich and the other is called “Happy For No Reason”. As far as music goes, I am not listening to much as I am concentrated on my own album.

Shakira recently sung parts of "We Are Young" and "Somebody That I Used To Know." She sounded great! "We Are Young" is a vocal highlight! Check it out:

This show will allow the US to get to know Shakira's unique persona. She's funny, witty and well-spoken. Bingo! And the above interview that starts with the perfume, shows she is no empty-headed dancing pop-tart. It's the double-edged sword that a song like "Hips Don't Lie" has defined her for the past several years in the US. I may actually tune into TV for first time because of her.

I am very excited to see what all this era ultimately has in store for Shakira. I really have an optomistic view right now that everything will come together really nicely and she'll have some significant mainstream pop hits this era and also some strong album sales. Things seem to be shaping up nicely with her joining The Voice. Ahh, beyond excited!! <3

Another positive note is that she's being managed by the same people that manage Rihanna. So, that has me optimistic about Shakira's chances. That, plus the voice exposure should really help Shakira :)
Last I heard, she already finished 21 songs and she's still working on more songs. The final tracklist should be great :) What I hope is that she likes enough of the songs to release two albums, an English and a Spanish one.

2 years ago Shakira released her album 'Sale El Sol'! Now 2 years later this is still her latest body of work. The album sold 4 million copies worldwide charting at #1 in more than 15 countries such as Spain, Greece, France, Argentina, Italy, Mexico... The album set the record by selling 30,000 copies in Mexico in one day. In Colombia, the album sales reached 20,000 copies in one day with first week sales of a record breaking 100,000 copies. The album has accounted for 39% of overall album sales for the Latin Top 100 albums. This is week is #10 on Latin Pop Albums US (after 101 weeks) and #34 on Latin Albums. According to MTV 'Sale El Sol' is #10 at their 'Best Albums Of 2010' list. The album was certified: Gold in Austria, Brazil, Sweden, Germany. Platinum in Argentina, Hungary, Italy, Mexico, Portugal, Russia, Venezuela. Double Platinum in Poland, Spain, Switzerland.Diamond in Colombia. The first single 'Loca' reached #1 in more than 33 countries and has sold more than 5 million copies worldwide to date. 'Loca' is the most successful single in the history of the Greek Airplay chart. The album received 2 Latin Grammy Awards, Billboard Music Award and Latin Billboard Music Award. But besides that, the most important thing is the music. And with this album Shakira satisfied both her fans and her label. Songs such as 'Antes De Las Seis', 'Sale El Sol', 'Tu Boca', 'Lo Que Mas', 'Gordita' and the fan favorite 'Devocion' are the reasons why we love this project.

Sale El Sol is such a great album for her. It has a little of everything we expect from her. The latin-rock songs (Devocion, Tu Boca, Sale El Sol, Mariposas), the passionate ballads (Antes De Las Seis, Lo Que Mas), the latin influenced songs (Loca, Rabiosa, Addicted To You), the pop songs (Loca, Waka), the big hits (Waka, Loca), the urban songs (Gordita), etc. It's a true album that showcases an artist with a diverse sound. All the songs sound different. That's one of the things I love about Shakira. All her albums sound different, which keeps us from getting bored. Success wise, some people in the US are surprised by the success of the album since it was successful almost completely away from the US (with the exception of the latin genre in the US). Waka hit #1 almost everywhere except the US. Almost all records for the album are outside the US. It went on to sell 4-5M without major help from the US, that alone is impressive :) The album received high praise from critics, getting an 89 (out of 100) rating on metacritic based off reviews from Rolling Stone, Billboard, All Music, Entertainment Weekly, The Boston Globe: www.metacritic.com/music/sale-el-sol/shakira... and now we wait for the new era :)
