HolidayGuy was correct about the ratings for the 2001 Britney Spears HBO concert. It was 5 million viewers. In the process of finding that information, I have also found the following information that I've added to the list in Post # 1:August 29, 1999: Cher - "Live from Las Vegas" (HBO) - about 6 million viewersNovember 18, 2001: Britney Spears - "Live from Las Vegas: Britney Spears" (HBO) - 5 million viewersNovember 20, 2001: Jennifer Lopez - "Jennifer Lopez In Concert" (NBC) - 11.8 million viewersNovember 27, 2002: Paul McCartney - "Back in the U.S." (ABC) - 8.1 million viewers, "5.3 rating, 9 share"November 28, 2002: Elvis - "Elvis Lives" (NBC) - 10.7 million viewersNovember 29, 2002: U2 - "Beautiful Day" (CBS) - 3.6 million viewers, "2.2 rating, 4 share"February 28, 2003: Bruce Springsteen - "Songs from the Rising" (CBS) - 5.4 million viewers, "4.2 rating, 6 share"March 25, 2003: Celine Dion - [Vegas] "Opening Night Live!" (CBS) - nearly 14 million viewers, "9.1 rating, 14 share"November 26, 2009: Beyonce - "Beyonce..I Am Yours" (CBS) - 5.2 million viewersNovember 26, 2009: Paul McCartney - "Good Evening New York City" (CBS) - 4.7 million viewers
In addition, I have updated the ratings information in Post # 1 with higher ratings totals for the following specials. (I found more than 1 source for each special that suggest the new higher numbers are accurate.) November 27, 2002: Tim McGraw - "Sing Me Home" (NBC) - 10 million viewersNovember 28, 2002: Faith Hill - "When The Lights Go Down" (NBC) - 11.3 million viewersThe original numbers from Billboard (Tim McGraw - 6.8 million; Faith Hill - 6.9 million) are wrong. It appears Billboard may have taken the Rating number(s) and translated them as Viewer Totals. That's not an accurate way to determine the millions in viewers. As a result, I have corrected the error on the list.
I also updated the information for these two specials with Viewer Totals: November 23, 2005: Kenny Chesney - "Somewhere in the Sun" (ABC) - 8.4 million viewers, "5.2/9 rating/share"November 23, 2005: Faith Hill - "Fireflies" (NBC) - 6.8 million viewers, "4.4/7 rating/share for NBC"
I have not stopped looking for the ratings for specials featuring Donna Summers and others that have been asked about. (I did find out that Donna Summer's "A Hot Summer Night With Donna" special was taped in California in 1983 and aired on HBO in 1984. It was released on VHS on June 25, 1991.) The search has not gone as well as I had hoped for some of the specials, but I haven't given up trying to find the ratings information.

The Carpenters had 6 music specials in the late 70's. Apparently they did really well, like #6 in the ratings. Any info?

According to Richard Carpenter, their first television special "placed No.6 in the Nielson Ratings for that week." He gave no other information. As a result, I have added the following to the list: December 8, 1976: The Carpenters - "Very First Television Special" (ABC) - "placed No.6 in the Nielson Ratings for that week."I have not been able to find any specific ratings information in terms of millions of viewers, but I did find some air dates for other Carpenters specials. Here is what I know, thus far, about their other specials: December 9, 1977: The Carpenters - "The Carpenters At Christmas" (ABC) May 17, 1978: The Carpenters - "Space Encounters" (ABC) December 19, 1978: The Carpenters - "A Christmas Portrait" (ABC) April 26, 1980 or May 16, 1980: The Carpenters - "Music, Music,Music!" (ABC)
That is all I know, thus far.

(I actually found ratings for a lot of those specials on the list by accident while looking for information on other specials.) After reading your post, I did go and look for information on the specials you listed. I've already found information for all of them. I have added the information to the list in Post # 1. Here is all of the information I found for all of the specials you listed (they are in Date order): June 7, 2000: Britney Spears - "Britney in Hawaii" (FOX) - 11.16 million viewers, "6.8 rating"November 30, 2000: Britney Spears - "No Place Like Home" (FOX) - 7.2 million viewersDecember 3, 2000: Christina Aguilera - "My Reflection" (ABC) - 8.1 million viewersNovember 30, 2003: Christina Aguilera - "Stripped in London" (WB) - 2.7 million viewers

That is all I know, thus far. thank you so much. gosh, Karen must've been so sick for those 1980's shows. :( She was a really good actress tho, from what i've seen. She loved skits. They only did that one special in 1980 titled "Music, Music, Music!" It was their final special before Karen passed away. (The special included appearances from various people including Ella Fitzgerald, John Davidson, Suzanne Somers, and others.) When I searched for information about the 1980 special I found conflicting reports about the air date for the special. That's why I posted 2 dates. I may (or may not) find out more info. on the special in another search. During my initial search for that 1980 special, some Youtube videos from the special came up. Here is a Google results page with some videos if you want to see them. (FYI: I haven't watched any of them so I am not sure if any videos carry a virus.) In other news: I have updated the list in Post # 1 to add information provided by HolidayGuy and alchemist. In addition, I have also gone back and posted the exact dates of all of the specials on that list - from Carrie Underwood, Faith Hill, and Garth Brooks to Adele, Harry Connick Jr., and Justin Bieber. I still have more information to add and more to look up, but that's all for right now.

Good work, MusicST- note that that Variety article says 7.1m viewers for Barbra Streisand's telecast, though. Perhaps the 11.2m is another of those combined stats, or total number of people watching at a given time (which is different than the average number of viewers).

Three Whitney Houston HBO specials please: Welcome Home Heroes Live From South Africa Classic Whitney The ratings for the "Heroes" special were already posted in Post # 1. Here they are: March 31, 1991: Whitney Houston - "Welcome Home Heroes" (HBO) - 7.9 million viewers
I have been unable to find the ratings for the other two Whitney Houston specials. I have also been unable to find the ratings for the Donna Summer "A Hot Summer Night With Donna" special that was mentioned earlier in this thread. I have not given up yet, but I have not been able to search very much, or even at all on some days, due to computer issues. I will try to find them when I'm able to search.

Whitney also had a special on ABC at the end of the I'm Your Baby Tonight era and before The Bodyguard called "Whitney Houston This Is My Life". I don't think it did very well at the time compared to other shows that were in it's time slot. For some bizarre reason they used concert footage from a date that she was Extremely hoarse at.
