Prism is $5.99 on iTunes this week. Get those sales Katy. I still want it to go 2x platinum although it might be unlikely at this point

Great post from someone on UKmix:
The discussion about how successful PRISM has been is interesting, but I do think people are perhaps comparing it too much to Teenage Dream instead of to other albums released in the past year or so. In the US, the album has sold nearly 1.5 million and singles from the album have sold about 13.5 million. I think that in a singles-driven market it's good to use TEA as a measure of an album's success. PRISM currently has sold about 2.85 million track-equivalent albums in the US (1.5m album sales + 13.5m single sales divided by 10). No album released in 2014 has come even close to that total. As for albums released in 2013, the only ones who can match PRISM's TEA total are Frozen (a soundtrack), JT's 20/20 Experience, Eminem's MMLP2 and Luke Bryan's Crash My Party. This basically means that PRISM is one of the 4 most successful artist albums released in the past 20 months in the US going by album and single sales.
Add to that the nearly 1.7 billion Vevo views she has gotten from this era which is more than any other artist has managed with their current eras and I don't see how you can call PRISM anything other than an outstanding success. Not an "okay success" but truly outstanding. Not to mention the era is not over. True the album has been hovering around the 50-mark for a while, but I can't imagine there won't be another single released for the holidays which will just help to milk the era (which has been thriving for over a year now) even more.

^ Great post. Thanks for sharing. "I can't imagine there won't be another single released for the holidays which will just help to milk the era (which has been thriving for over a year now) even more" That being said, Legendary Lovers is begging to be released. :)

Katy Perry Lands Seven Nominations for MTV EMAsWith seven nominations, Katy Perry leads the way for this year's MTV Europe Music Awards. Though the pop superstar can expect some stiff competition on the night from the likes of Ariana Grande (with six nominations), 5 Seconds of Summer and Pharrell Williams (five apiece). Katy is in the hunt for best pop, best female, best live, best look and her Prism hit βDark Horseβ ft. Juicy J is up for best song and best video. Sheβs also nominated in the curiously-titled biggest fans category, where her band of followers will face off against supporters of 5 Seconds of Summer, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj and One Direction. another great post:
When she finished the album, "Birthday" was scheduled second.
Pre-"Roar": 1. Roar 2. Birthday 3. Unconditionally 4. Walking On Air (like E.T.) 5. This Is How We Do 6. Legendary Lovers 7. By The Grace of God or This Moment
Then, midway into "Roar," she decided to release "Unconditionally" second because it was not only one of her favorites, but it was also really well received at the listening parties. Most importantly, it was the program director at Z100's favorite. Plus, she knew she was doing something in conjunction with Unicef, and I'm not sure how that figured in, but somehow it did.
At that point (sometime in mid-September), "Birthday" was moved from second to fourth. "Walking On Air" was moved from fourth to third (SNL, GMA, Ellen, iHeart, iTunes, etc.)
Mid-"Roar," Pre-Prism: 1. Roar 2. Unconditionally 3. Walking On Air 4. Birthday 5. This Is How We Do 6. Legendary Lovers 7. This Moment or By The Grace of God
Initially, when "Dark Horse" was taking off on Rhythmic, they still wanted to release "Walking On Air" third. That's why the label wasn't even sure "Dark Horse" was going to be a single, despite the early airplay--everyone involved wanted "Walking On Air."
Katy was pissed. Despite Capitol going ahead and pushing it to rhythmic and pop the next week, Katy didn't consider it official until the end of the month--that's why she didn't shoot the video until January.
From December through March, "Birthday" was still set to follow, and it did. She didn't want to release the pre-releases back-to-back. "Walking On Air" was going to be the fifth single (hence why she never stopped performing it -- she performed it at that Japan event in early March, and yet again at a Radio1 festival in late April, right after "Birthday" was released).
Post-Dark Horse, Pre-May 2014 1. Roar 2. Unconditionally 3. Dark Horse 4. Birthday 5. Walking On Air 6. Legendary Lovers 7, This Moment or By The Grace of God
Since "Dark Horse" was rhythmic, and she expected "This Is How We Do" to be a big crossover summer hit at rhythmic, she yanked it once "Dark Horse" became official--she wanted all of the singles to sound different. It didn't become a contender again until EMI sent the song to Australia/New Zealand and pushed it there without Capitol or Katy's permission.
In May, Katy decided to release this last minute instead of "Walking On Air" -- the label was convinced it was a hit, Katy thought it was a hit (despite being OK with not releasing it post-"Dark Horse") and it was one of the very early crowd-favorites on tour. "Walking On Air" was axed.
Up until June, "Legendary Lovers" was supposed to follow, but then "Walking On Air" became a contender yet again when Capitol started hearing from music directors complaining about "This Is How We Do." Radio wanted "Birthday" and "Walking On Air" from the get go. She wasn't going to release both "Legendary Lovers" and "Walking On Air" -- it was going to be one or the other because she wanted to release a ballad last. Then, she thought she might only be able to release one more single. Briefly, she thought about just releasing "This Moment" or "It Takes Two" instead, but then went back to either "Legendary Lovers" or "Walking On Air."
Now there may or may not be another single from the Prism album. They haven't reached a consensus on which one to release, and they are trying to gauge whether there's even enough interest. The radio teams are still trying to convince stations to play this more, especially HAC. I guess they gave up on Rhythmic.

"Birthday" is drab and mediocre and would have under-performed no matter when it was released in my opinion.

"Birthday" is my favorite single to come out of this era. I don't understand why it gets all the hate. I didn't expect it to be a massive hit ("Roar", "Dark Horse") upon hearing it would be released, but I assumed it would be bigger ("The One That Got Away", "Waking Up In Vegas") than it was. I think it suffered from lack of promotion, a garbage music video and the longevity of "Dark Horse".

Birthday would'be been a Top 10 had it had a video like TIHWD. It had 80M airplay and #13 in sales (but literally no streaming) when it hit #17 on the Hot 100.

birthday is my fav single behind dark horse. i don't know why people are saying it never should have been a single - it would've gone top 10 if it didn't have a bullshit 8 min video.

I am quite pleased with the way this era has panned out. I think some folks think it was not that strong because of the total anomaly of the Teenage Dream era. That kind of success with an album / singles comes along once every 10 years or so...where the album is huge...there is hit after hit off the album...etc. Very hard to duplicate. Think "Rumors" by Fleetwood Mac..."Thriller" by Michael Jackson...."Like a Prayer" by Madonna..."Jagged Little Pill" by Alanis Morissette...all of these artists had varying degrees of great success after these huge albums, but have never recaptured the ubiquity of these albums during their respective eras. So I think PRISM and its singles have done very well and I say good for you Katy :)

Unconditionally is my favorite single lol. Then Dark Horse, with Walking On Air being between those two, or above both. Legendary Lovers would have been #1 if released. RIP LL, most likely.

Birthday is my favorite single also, I loved it immediately when I first heard it. I was surprised it didn't chart higher, I was expecting Top 10 easily. I do wish Walking On Air would've been a single instead of TIHWD, would've loved to hear it on the radio.

:) www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6258966/katy-perry-prismatic-tour-hot-toursKaty Perry's Prismatic Tour Doing Big Business By Bob Allen | September 19, 2014 Katy Perry takes her Prismatic World Tour to No. 1 on Billboard's weekly Hot Tours recap with $31 million in ticket sales from the tour's North American leg that began in June. The tally includes concerts that occurred in a two-month span beginning on July 15. Four cities during that time period hosted the pop star for two performances: Chicago, New York, Boston and Philadelphia. The Windy City led the pack with the highest gross of $3.3 million from sold-out shows on Aug. 7 and 8 at the United Center. Meanwhile, Philly's Wells Fargo Center sold the most tickets with attendance logged at 28,213 for performances on Aug. 4 and 5. Perry played two shows at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., on July 24-25, as well as a two-night stint at Boston's TD Garden at the beginning of August. Since the North American trek kicked off on June 22, ticket sales for the Prismatic tour currently total $50 million from almost half a million sold tickets at 33 concerts, based on box office data reported to Billboard. The ongoing tour is booked in North American markets through mid-October and then heads down under in November for a six-city jaunt through Australia and New Zealand.

Legendary Lovers as single #6, replace the instrumental bridge with a new rap verse by Kanye or Drake, and she'll have her winter smash.

I heard Double Rainbow in a shop today and I was in awe at how Katy insists on sending shitty songs to radio while her album houses so much better tracks.

Double Rainbow is still weak and virtually nonexistent, it would have done worse than Unconditionally.
The album has done well, the era is definitely a success overall. If you look at all the other female artists who released around the same time as her (Late 2013), she's pretty much done the best overall with her new material. Miley's streak suddenly ended after WB's reign. Lorde also only got 2 hits, and together their success is less than that of Roar & Dark Horse. ARTPOP imploded. Beyonce's album sales are extremely impressive, but her success on the single front cuts into her. If you add up the success of all of her album's singles, it probably isn't enough to bypass Roar or Dark Horse individually, let alone together. She was never really going to replicate what she did the last time around, but she did far far better than most in her position. Roar and Dark Horse weren't just regular hits by big name artists like My Life Would Suck Without You, Blow Me (One Last Kiss), Applause/You and I, Part Of Me, etc.), they were gargantuan hits and easily among the absolute elite from both years in terms of success.
Despite some of the album's singles not being up to per with past successes, her celebrity and star power is still as intact as ever. That kinda puts into perspective of just how far she's come relative to where she started. Her power is no longer as reliant on just having hits like some artists, she's a legitimate A-lister. A far cry from when people thought her big days were behind her just after Gaga broke through.
She's fine for now. I'm actually surprised there's been no word on a re-release by now.

Yeah, no denying this era is a success. But it's also become a bit of a non-event since Dark Horse peaked.
But I'll be curious to see if this kind of logic is applied to, say, Adele when her album inevitably doesn't perform as well as 21.
