This is a revision to my prior thread pulsemusic.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=gmn&action=display&thread=61547&page=1This thread, once I am done will again include most top 40, most top 10 and most #1's from one album. This list will be somewhat shorter than the other because it was getting too big. Some criteria: - This list is based on a single release of an album (NOT all releases rolled into one) - I am also ignoring the Glee soundtracks because it can be argued that the weekly singles don't come from a single album but rather that the albums are compilations of the weekly singles. - I chose #1, top 10 and top 40 as the cutoff points. These are the most common other than top 100. Top 100 would be too difficult to build and maintain. Lists at other cutoffs are possible too but are less common in industry trade writeups. If someone wants to see a different list they are welcome to contribute

If releases are separated, I find ET somewhat suspect given that the version that got the vast majority of the song's chart points are the one with Kanye vocals seen nowhere on the original release of Teenage Dream.
Counting separate releases, Taylor is tied with the Jacksons for 3 releases with 6 hits each. Legend. Hoping for Red to have 6 too.

I think it's Janet's "Rhythm Nation" with the highest (7 top 5 hits)

Based on that logic, songs with radio edits shouldn't count either if they have an extended mix on the album.

Then Paula wouldn't count because "Opposites Attract" on the single featured Skat Cat's rap. Or George Michael's "Monkey" wouldn't because its remixed hit version was never on "Faith". I think "E.T." is fine; its not like J.Lo's 'remixes' which were completely different songs (originally)

Katy and the Bee Gees are the only outliers. Was there something about the Hot 100 methodology/Radio during that 5 year period that made it easier to have back-to-back chart toppers or were these artists simply just that hot? Also interesting that only Mariah repeated the feat (3 for Daydream 2 for Mimi) after the above set. Whitney did had a go at 3 prior to this though.

Note on Most #1's - Many lists credit Usher's Confessions with four. I credit that album with three for this list since the 4th came from the second release.
Because it wasn't challenging a record, no industry publication blinked at it, but it falls under the same category as Teenage Dream here

spooky21 - pop radio during that time was governed heavily by the "Thriller" mentality - that a good album should be mined for as many hits as possible, and if you were a 'hot' artist, you didn't have to work very hard at keeping your string alive, unless there were some real clunkers. This created a (false?) chart rhythm where anyone from Bruce Springsteen to Expose could have a huge string of top 10 hits. And thus a better shot at #1s in a row. Also Singles were churned out much more frequently back then, reducing burnout fatigue, increasing the frequency of new fresh hot sounds. Single sales (at real lows) simply mirrored the airplay stats.

Single turnover was so fast in those days. I wish the charts really worked like that, but as we've seen with Soundscan, that was pretty unrealistic. I think the music industry encouraged fast single turnover in order to make the money.

They didn't have half the radio consolidation as in today's market so I would have assumed it would have taken a long time for singles to work their way from urban centers to the more rural areas, building as they go along. Today's market model suggest that all radio stations get the digital single the same time and Corporate standardization decides who gets long term extended play (i.e. Clear Channel). In all honesty, I really don't like quick turnover charts. You tend to get record companies trying all sorts of tricks to get quick maximum exposure.

I'd rather have quick maximum exposure. You are less prone to burn out that way.

Shouldn't Lady Gaga be added to the list of most top 40 hits with 6 from BTW, including MTN and Hair?

I do agree with limiting this list to single releases of an album, but what about deluxe editions that are released at the same time as the standard edition? The deluxe edition of Speak Now was available from day 1 of the release of the album (though the deluxe tracks weren't available as digital singles), so technically that is a single release as opposed to a re-release. The three deluxe tracks all charted in the top 40.
Edit: I've also realised that counting deluxe editions, Nicki Minaj also has 6 from Pink Friday. It seems that one should count as "Superbass" was available as a digital single from the release of the album.

The extra 3 from Speak Now only charted after it was released to all outlets a year later. It was a Target exclusive before then. So that really was 2 releases
I can look up Superbass later unless someone wants to post the 6 songs and their peaks now?

Speak Now shouldn't count, because those 3 songs were basically new, promo songs the way they were released.
Pink Friday had: Your Love 14 Check It Out 24 Right Thru Me 26 Moment 4 Life 13 Super Bass 3 Fly 19

Janet's "State of the World" from Rhythm Nation 1814 peaked in the Top 5 of the airplay charts, but no on the Hot 100 since a commercial single was not made available.
Are these stats based solely on the BB Hot 100?

So if Taylor gets 6, she'll be the only one with 4 releases with 6+?

The total for Red is still 5
