Wow this song was on of the greatest gainers for weeks. Now it's down to a bullet under +100, and moves 17-18*
Is it over already? I thought this was a given for eventual HAC Top 10.

It looks like BNL has not been received well on Hot AC, one of their "core" formats in past years. The song is also stallling on AAA, which has always been very friendly to BNL.

I hope the Barenaked Ladies can pick up again soon. They deserve at least a top 10 on Hot AC.

Well, let's be honest. The song just isn't that great. My impression of BNL is that they make "fun" music. Since these guys are now in their 30s, I would expect their fate to be similar to Sugar Ray and Smashmouth. My impression of BNL may not be totally accurate since I'm only familiar with their singles. Maybe their non-singles are more serious. I hear that they are a good live band but I think Sugar Ray is too but that certainly didn't help their latest album sale.
I expect a strong debut for their album in the US and a pretty quick fall off the chart (maybe 10 weeks in the top 100).

Your impression of BNL as a "fun" band is dead on accurate.
However, there IS a difference between BNL and bands like SmashMouth and Sugar Ray. 1) BNL had an extensive fan base long before they were ever on the radio. In fact, during my early HS years, a BNL fan and a Dave Matthews Band fan were virtually synonymous, despite the fact that their music is very different. 2) BNL really only had one big Pop hit ("One Week") and unlike the other 2 bands you mentioned, they never tried to win over the TRL crowd.
But I definitely see how someone could think they were like Sugar Ray and Smash Mouth. BNL does have more credibility with me though, and I think the same is true for the general public.

Some bands need hits to keep going, and others don't. I like Smashmouth and Sugar Ray and it pains me when they flop because I know they'll either change musical directions, or just fade away altogether because their fan base just isn't big enough to sustain them.
BNL doesn't need hits to keep going. Would it be nice to see success for them? Sure, but their last few hits are enough to keep them going for many more years. Top 20 is all they really need in my opinion.

Sugar Ray and Smashmouth, however, have been around much fewer years in comparison to Barenaked Ladies, and it wasn't until the Barenaked Ladies fourth albu where they really took off and before then already had success in Canada and Adult Alternative markets ("Brian Wilson", "If I Had $1,000,000", "The Old Apartment") Now going into their sixth album, I don't think anything is going to stop this band, as they've had a steady rise to the top in contrast to Sugar Ray and Smashmouth's strong debuts then fading. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I don't know if I should do this, but I put Sugar Ray, BNL, and Smash Mouth in a crop together. They all seem to make fast, nonsense pop. I think I would like BNL better, if they'd slow down the lyrics so I could sing along and actually understand them. Like many artists today, I like artists that articulate lyrics and I can sing along without too much thought, but with just enough thought to a song, that the song MEANS something...(if that makes sense?)

BNL may like to have fun, but I fail to see many similarities that they would have with the other two. BNL has consistently been about song writing, while the other two have consistently been about hooks. BNL didn't go off on that tangent until "One Week".

Actually..I would kind of like to see how successful an artist/single would be withOUT a video. I'm sure if a song was promoted well enough otherwise, no artists really would NEED video's made. Besides..I'm one of those people who rather hear the song 1st and not judge artists based on view(looks) but quality of music.

According to an article in Maclean magazine (Oct 20), they do have a video for "Another Postcard". The writer describes the set of the music video as follows: Toronto is in ruins. Beside a crumpled bus, on pavement littered with rubble, five soldiers are backed up against an army truck and under fire, looking like extras in an old war movie. They're being bombarded by fake concrete debris -- chunks of painted Styrofoam a film crew is throwing at them as they pretend to react to a six-storey-tall chimpanzee that's climbing the CN Tower.I think the article addresses some of the points about the seriousness of the Barenaked Ladies as a band. Here's an excerpt: The Barenaked Ladies aren't going to dispel their image as a novelty act by choosing a Dr. Seuss chimp riff as the first single. But the decision wasn't theirs to make.
"I originally thought it wasn't the right choice," concedes Steven Page, explaining that the label gets to pick the singles. "But whatever the label feels good about, great. I love the fact that it's nonsense. This way we can say, here's our new record, here's a fun song. That's what music is about for us. People come to us first for entertainment, then hopefully leave with other stuff."
Other stuff? Well, yes. Behind the clowning antics and comic irony, the Barenaked Ladies are Canada's most serious band -- a quintet of seriously good musicians with serious questions about war, fame, social justice and their own success. We have divas coming out of our ears -- Celine, Shania, Sarah, Alanis, Avril, Nelly -- but BNL is a band, a cohesive gang of wise guys who seem determined to prove that the harmonic shimmer of optimism and wit pioneered by the Beatles is not dead.Link: www.macleans.ca/culture/music/article.jsp?content=20031020_67430_67430

I'd say a possible reason for not making a video is because there's nowhere for that video to be played. MTV and VH1 apparantly plays very select videos and BET too. So what else is there? If Diana Krall made a video, where would it go?

How bout Nickelback? IMO, I think they are the best from Canada in the past few years.
