Finally, this debut single from Irish artist damien Rice, who formally played lead in the alternative rock-act Juniper, is taking off after a sleeper start.
With a +50 bullet and making its first appearance in the AAA Top 20, I can see "Volcano" having a shot at becoming a Top 5 hit on AAA radio.
Can Damien Rice eventually leak into other formats in a pace like Norah Jones? I believe, despite his video being a sleep-fest, "Volcano" can eventually peak in the Hot AC 25-30 range and slip into AC.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I love this song. It's so mellow and it's rare when an artist uses a cello to drive the song. The first few times I heard the song I didn't pay much attention... but it really grew on me. You're right that it's a sleeper, and it's good that there were stations that were willing to hold onto it long enough for it to chart. I think it could cross over to a few other formats, but pop seems unlikely.

If "Flake" by Jack Johnson couldn't make the Top 40 on CHR/Pop, "Volcano" certainly won't chart there, as MTV would never play the video for that song either. But, Damien Rice may become the latest solo artist to grace AAA radio and "O" may pick up in sales, as many artists that represent AAA radio now never get Top 20 CHR/Pop hits anymore but generate great sales. I liked this song from the start, and could never figure out why it wasn't a AAA hit... so I'm glad it is finally becoming one.

I've seen this video on VH1 quite a bit. He's OK, and I quite like the song, but I don't think it has the legs or the stamina (wait a minute, those two refer to the same thing) to go much further on charts other than AAA. It's hard to say, but when I first heard Jason Mraz for example, I immediately saw that he had some potential to be nominated for a Grammy or two. Not Mr Rice.

YAWN! This song really doesn't do anything for me. I don't see it going very far on Hot AC and CERTAINLY not on pop.
