What's up with this song on the alternative and Triple A format? It's kinda like when Metallica released a new song and it STORMED up the chart but peaked really quickly and fell after mere weeks. Dave is suffering from UK Chartitus. LOL

Maybe that's because radio realized people don't tune in to feel depressed.

Maybe that's because radio realized people don't tune in to feel depressed. I'm not so sure. This certainly isn't the first depressing song promoted on radio. But you've got a good point, a depressing tune usually has to have something really special about it if it's to succeed on the air. Although the song is downbeat in both tempo and subject matter, I like it. The version I've heard was recorded live so I'm not sure that it's the same one that's playing on radio . If it's not maybe it should be.

I think the kind of run it had on the Alt. chart is normal for Dave Matthews, because "Where Are You Going" went like 50-31 and then all of the sudden started dropping, and it's not like "Grey Street" got high on that chart either.
This song peaked quickly on AAA and Hot AC and then started dropping like a rock. I kind of agree with Jersey Boy, and I would also add that the song doesn't stand up to repeated listens. I like the chorus, but for the rest of the song, it gets really tiring to hear over and over how Cyrus Jones lived from 1810-1913 and Muriel Stonewall lived from 1903-1954 and Mikey Parsons from 67-75, etc.

You hit the nail on the head. As much as I like the song, it was quick to burn out for me.

I guess I haven't been exposed to this long enough since I still think it's quite good. I can understand why some people wouldn't like it, but I can handle depressing songs really well when they're done decently (especially given my emotional state). The part I like the most is the "Ring Around The Rosie" verses, especially since I learned what that song meant in AP Euro History last week.

The quick rise was only because it was DM. The quick fall was when the stations realized that hype can take a song so far, and listeners cannot take listening to this horrible song.
I for one am glad that this song is quickly leaving. And to think, people thought this would be #1 on AAA!!! ;)

Still loving it here. I guess this is a love it/hate it type song. Rolling Stone called it one of his best written songs. The fact that it's so dark is what I like about it.
