Does this mean Premiere has a grudge against Dave "Take Five" Brubeck?

NOTES: - This week's Station of the Week: CKPE. They played Canadian "extras" after each of Premiere's extras: "Diana" by Bryan Adams (the B-side to "Heaven"), "My Girl" by Chilliwack, "Hold On" by Santana (which is actually a cover originally done by Canadian Ian Thomas), and from earlier in '87, "Soul City" by The Partland Brothers (played right after the show ended).
- It's only mentioned for one of them, but all four Premiere extras this week debuted on the Hot 100 this week. IIRC, the last time that happened was with 1-18-86, two years ago.
- Note the underline for "In My Dreams", which I only use for songs that we won't hear any higher than indicated even though it's not their peak. 10-24 was the guest-hosted show in October 1987, but "In My Dreams" would go 22-22-19-22 during this point of its run.
- #1 on the Country chart: "The Way We Make a Broken Heart" by Rosanne Cash
- #1 on the Album chart: Bad by Michael Jackson
- #1 on the Soul chart: "(You're Puttin') A Rush on Me" by Stephanie Mills

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE OF THE OCTOBER 15, 1977 AT40 CHART I HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS SUNDAY MORNING:
* SONG OF NOTE: Leading off at #40 was the reissue of the 1975 Judy Collins Top 40 hit "Send in the Clowns" (penned by Steven Sondheim). * BY THE NUMBERS: This AT40 chart had 8 female solo artists, 2 Australian acts, 5 motion picture songs, 6 remakes, and 11 foreign acts. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Since the 1970's and up to the 1977 year, the Rolling Stones and Chicago each had at least 1 top 10 album each year? 2) Peter Brown originally did Carpenters style sweet music? 3) Rita Coolridge's "We're All Alone" was written by Boz Scaggs? 4) Eric Carmen had released an expensive album that was worth 1/3 million dollars(!)? 5) Dorothy Moore has a CB radio name of "Misty Blue"? 6) Fleetwood Mac is the group with the most lineup changes of 8? 6) Ronnie McDowell knew about Elvis Presley since he was at age 6? 7) Stephen Bishop was born in San Diego, California? 8) Pat Boone, who's daughter Debby Boone on this AT40 chart was in its first week of a long 10 week run of "You Light Up My Life", is the 3rd. place successful artist of the rock era behind Elvis Presley and the Beatles? * BLOOPER OR NOT?: Casey called Ted "Cat Scratch Fever" Nugent as "TEDDY Nugent"? * ALSO: 1) There were no question letters, 2) The AT40 1 minute 30 second edit (shade of "The Humpty Dance", "O.P.P.", "Enter Sandman", and "Mind Playing Tricks on Me" among others in later AT40 years) of Barry White's "It's Escatcy" was played. 3) The AT40 extra of Michael Jackson's Ben was kept intact (Why would Premiere omit the AT40 extra of Dave Brubeck's "Take Five"? Not suitable for oldies radio?). 4) WLS 94.7 FM Chicago played all 3 optional extras this week of Paul Simon's "Slip Sliding Away", LeBlanc and Carr's "Falling", and the demoted to Optional Extra status of the original AT40 extra of "Mandy" by Barry Manilow (which has Casey's mention of getting a copy of the original "Mandy" then called "Brandy" by a New Zealand artist around 1972, and I know in a 1975 AT40 episode when Barry Manilow's "Mandy" was on the chart hid did play a drop piece of that song).

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE REGARDING THE OCTOBER 18, 1975 AT40 CHART I HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS MORNING:
* The previous 1975 week Wink Martindale guest hosted for Casey Kasem (Casey even mentioned Wink was one of the first DJ's to play The Captain and Tenielle's "The Way I Want To Touch You" in 1973-1974). * This was one of the first episodes which featured the 1975-1984 "Shuckatoom" theme which was played at the end of the show after Casey signed off, but the "Shuckatoom" theme wouldn't be heard at the beginning of the AT40 show until the November 1, 1975 AT40 episode. * BY THE NUMBERS: This AT40 chart has 4 remakes, 7 British Acts, and 25 songs written or co-written by the act who performs them. Also: A song nippet heard in Dickie Goodman's "Mr. Jaws" had its own Top 40 slot - Glen Campbell's "Rhinestone Cowboy" spending an 18th. week in the top 40. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Smokey Robinson left the Miracles in 1972 and later became Vice President of Motown? 2) John Fogerty was previously charted solo as the 1 man act the Blue Ridge Rangers? 3) Bruce Springsteen has the likenesses of Bob Dylan, James Dean, and Elvis Presley? 4) Esther Phillips became a member of the Johnny Otis Band in 1949? 5) Michael Murphy's song "Carolina In The Pines" is dedicated to his wife Carolina? 6) The B-side of Linda Rondstat's "Heat Wave" is "Love Is a Rose"? 7) The original version of "Brazil" (covered by the Ritchie Family) was a #2 hit for Xavier Cugat in 1943? 8) Jefferson Starship was previously called Jefferson Airplane? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding if 2 versions of 1 song hit #1 in the rock era at the same time - Never happened, but almost did in 1957 with "Young Love", Tab Hunter's version was #1 while Sonny James' version peeked at #2; 2) Regarding a record spending the top 10 the longest time - "Paper Doll" by The Mills Brothers spending 30 weeks in the top 10 and 12 weeks at #1; 3) Regarding a top album artist who never had a hit single on Billboard's Hot 100 chart - Jim Nabors, who had 12 albums make the Billboard album chart from 1966 to 1972 but never a Hot 100 single ever! GOL-LEE!!! * ALSO: 1) Casey did a report on whatever became of Timi Yuro (a drop piece of Timi's "Hurt" was played), what happened that she got married on Master Charge and attempted a comeback single in 1975 (Timi would die in 2004), 2) An oddity: The B-side of John Denver's #1 song "I'm Sorry" called "Calypso" was played, 3) WLS 94.7 FM Chicago played the first 2 optional extras of the not reaching the top 40 James Taylor song called "Mexico" and the first #1 song for 1976 called "Saturday Night" by the Bay City Rollers.
Reminder: Next weekend's AT40: The 70's offerings will be 2 shows depending on demographics.
FINAL NOTE: This week I would like to dedicate in memory Lou Schiemer, who owned the Filmation studios, who passed away recently at the age of 85 days before Lou's birthday. Lou Schiemer's Filmation studios was the studio that gave Casey Kasem his first ever cartoon voice work: Voicing Robin the Boy Wonder on the 1968 Filmation Adventures of Batman animated series. (This was one year before Casey started to do his Shaggy voice in the Hanna-Barbera Scooby-Doo cartoons and 2 years before Casey began his AT40 hosting duties). Tidbit: Did you know Casey Kasem almost got to be the voice of Archie for the Filmation Archie cartoon series but Dallas McKennon got the Archie voice part?

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE AIRED ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS SUNDAY MORNING:
WLS chose the October 23, 1976 AT40 episode, and here are my thoughts: * BY THE NUMBERS: This AT40 chart has 5 former #1 songs, 12 acts with their first top 40 hits, 6 duos and 2 acts (Norman Conners and Ringo Starr) who are also drummers. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Jefferson Starship was originally an acid rock group/pioneer sounding Jefferson Airplane in the 1960's? 2) The female cooing voice at the end of Rod Stewart's "Tonight's The Night" is done by Rod's then girlfriend at the time named Britt Ekland? 3) Herb Alpert of A&M records helped sign England Dan and John Ford Coley to a record deal? 4) The members of Kiss never wanted to be seen in public without their makeup on (Though it would be in 1983 until the mid or late 1990's Kiss was seen with no make up at all in public!)? 5) "That'll Be The Day", covered by Linda Rondstat, was originally the first chart hit for Buddy Holly? 6) The group Chicago, occupying the #1 spot on this AT40 episode with "If You Leave Me Now", had traded in their brassy jazz rock style of 1969-1975 in favor of a more soft rock style? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding the song on the Motown label to stay at #1 the longest - At the 1976 time, it was the 7 week #1 song "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye (Though in later years the record would be broken by "Endless Love" by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie (Spending 9 weeks at #1 in 1981) and then "End of the Road" by Boyz II Men (Spending 13 weeks at #1 in 1992), and 2) Regarding the act who hit charts under the most different names solo and in groups - John Lennon (of the Beatles, of course) with 8 to 10 different chart names! * DROP PIECES: 1) A drop piece of the original 1973 version of "A Little Bit More" done by Bobby Gosh was played to tie in with the Dr. Hook version, 2) A drop piece of a piano work by Roger Williams was played as Casey did a report that while Roger Williams was in the military he was also a boxer. * ALSO: 1) Then in 1976 AT40 Chicago radio station WDHF is mentioned; 2) WLS played all 3 AT40 optional extras of "Stand Tall" by Burton Cummings, "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" by Leo Sayer, and "Car Wash" by Rose Royce; 3) Why did this AT40 episode (first played in 2010) cut down "A Fifth of Beethoven" to 1 minute and 10 seconds - Premiere editing at the 2010 time?
ONE FINAL NOTE: Is it doing November and December 2013 that Premiere will offer AT40 Christmas shows as alternate shows to the AT40/70's and AT40/80's shows? If it is, there may be weeks when a 1970 AT40 episode, a 1971 AT40 episode, and a 1972 AT40 episode will be offered single rather than with 1973-1979 AT40 alternates. I'm also betting the AT40: The 70's year end show (in 2 parts) will be 1977 and the AT40: The 80's year end show (also in 2 parts) will be either 1984 or 1985 for the New Year's weekends around December 28-29, 2013 and January 4-5, 2014 (The January 4-5, 2014 weekend will also mark the 10th. anniversary of the final weekend Casey did the second incarnation of AT40 CHR before he was taken over by Ryan Seacrest though Casey would still do AT20 AC (later renamed by Spring 2004 as American Top 10) and AT20 Hot AC until Casey's retirement in Summer 2009)

Seems like there'd usually be at least one non-#1 among them - not the case this week.
- From the "Fun With Titles?" files: First Archive "Soldier Boy" following "Hit Me With Your Best Shot". The third Archive does a similar thing, though in that case it's "I Can't Stop Loving You" following a song whose narrator does that very thing - though she might be wanting to.
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Funkin' For Jamaica" by Tom Browne
- #1 on the Country chart: "I Believe in You" by Don Williams
- #1 on the Album chart: Guilty by Barbra Streisand

A SCREW UP ALERT DONE BY WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS MORNING! When I turned on the radio around 6:30 AM Chicago Standard Time the station thanks to standard time change mode was in progress playing the first hour of the AT40: The 70's episode (The song I heard was the #30 song "Nutbush City Limits" by Ike and Tina Turner) which I thought the show started earlier, then after the first optional extra of "Leave Me Alone (Ruby Red Dress)" by Helen Reddy the station played 2 random songs ("Good Times Roll" by the Cars and "Old Days" by Chicago), then at the 7 AM Chicago Standard Time hour (the normal Sunday WLS 94.7 AT40: The 70's start time) it started hour #1 of the AT40: The 70's episode again! WHY WOULD THEY DO THIS? Normally before 7 AM Sundays the WLS 94.7 FM Chicago plays a public affairs show or something like that. So because of this, I'm skipping my thoughts on AT40: The 70's this week and hopefully resume next week as long as the station doesn't keep doing screw ups!
(UPDATE: At 8 AM Chicago Standard Time WLS is now at Hour 2 correctly, and I bet a 9 AM Chicago Standard Time the last AT40: The 70's hour - Hour #3 - airs)

Another 1981 show starting straight in at #40. And also like 8-1, there's a high number of debuts on it too.
- Speaking of that week, you may recall that Journey's "Who's Crying Now" was the highest debut that week. Casey pointed out that it'd peaked at #4 a few weeks ago, but what he didn't bother to mention was that the song was one of the seven that dropped out this week.
- The closing to the first hour was unusual in that that's where Casey pointed out the first-time chart feat of two members of a still-active group both having solo hits in the countdown at once, coming up.
- No spoiler for the new #1 song - Casey simply built suspense by saying, "...which means we're headed for a new #1!" leading into the final break. Something that might have been neat, though, is if he'd referenced the Stones threatening to hit the top here during their Archive song.
- AN ACCIDENTAL WINTER WEATHER HIT?: The final Premiere extra, "Cool Night", on a night where it's getting down to the 20s around here (tonight), and with a chart run during a wintertime that no doubt featured days not even getting to that.
- #1 on the Album chart: Tattoo You by The Rolling Stones (or, The Stones, as he called them this week - these directly followed #2)
- #1 on the Country chart: "Fancy Free" by The Oak Ridge Boys
- #1 on the Soul chart: "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" by Roger

Normally when there's a 1979 show that means there's an alternate '70s show. There is but in this case the alternate show will be the Christmas show from 12/25/1971. Yes, the Christmas music barrage has begun. Anyway this is why my preview isn't a two-part post as would normally be the case.
As for "AT40: The '80s" this weekend's show is from 11/10/1985
Three songs debuted this week: "Party All The Time" - Eddie Murphy (#35) "Running Up That Hill" - Kate Bush (#39) "Say You Say Me" - Lionel Richie (#40; Hot 100 Debut)

WELL, NO MISTAKE FROM WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO AIRING AT40: THE 70'S THIS WEEK, SO HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THE NOVEMBER 10, 1979 AT40 EPISODE AIRED THIS WEEK ON AT40: THE 70'S:
* This episode is first hour optional, so the show aired on WLS 94.7 FM started with hour #2 (First song at #32 - "Victim of Love" by Elton John.) * BY THE NUMBERS: This AT40 chart had 4 British acts and 2 Canadian acts. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Elton John during a concert, collapsed on stage with a case of flu but had to recover by finishing his concert? 2) Lauren Wood was once a member of the group Chunky, Ernie, and Novi? 3) Bob Dylan's first album in 1961 cost $400 to produce? 4) J.D. Souther once worked with Glenn Frey prior to Frey becoming a member of the Eagles? 5) The drummer for the group Foreigner once suffered a deaf ear because of loud amplifier noise and now wears earplugs? 6) Barry Manilow's song "Ships" is written by former Mott the Hoople member Ian Hunter? 7) As a teenager, Kenny Rogers wanted to keep his job working at an ice cream parlor rather than becoming a singer? 8) Styx first recorded for the Wooden Nickel record label? 9) 2 members of the Commodores quit the group but were bought back because of a con idea? * QUESTION LETTERS: Regarding if any German acts made the Top 40 - Up to 1979 there were 4: Helmet Zacharias, Bert Kemphert, Kraftwerk, and Silver Convention (Casey forgot to mention Boney M! And in later years we had these German acts make the top 40: Peter Schilling, Nena, Real McCoy, and 2 Unlimited; also not a question letter but Casey responded to many fans how many copies it takes for Billboard to deteremine a song going to #1: Well, no fixed answer, but Casey estimated for slow sales a #1 song sells 50,000 copies and for fast sales a #1 song sells 200,000 to 300,000 sales (Now how would that be for downloading songs on iTunes in current years rather than buying music on Compact Discs?) * ALSO: 1) Casey played a drop piece of Stevie Wonder's first hit "Fingertips Part 2" (done when he 12 years old, then called Little Stevie Wonder) that it was the biggest #1 song done in front of a live audience spending 3 weeks at #1 in 1963 (Until in 1980 Paul McCartney's live "Coming Up" matched the 3 week "Fingertips" mark, and in 1992 Mariah Carey's live UNPLUGGED remake of "I'll Be There" spent on Shadoe Stevens' AT40 8 weeks at #1); 2) WLS 94.7 FM Chicago played the optional extras of "Rock With You" by Michael Jackson and the demoted to OPTIONAL EXTRA STATUS AT40 Archive song of "Theme From S.W.A.T." by Rhythm Heritage; 3) And of course, the other AT40 Archive song of "Love Machine" by the Miracles and the 2 Long Distance Dedications of "Run From Home" by Lindisfarne and "How Deep Is Your Love" by the Bee Gees were heard.

7) As a teenager, Kenny Rogers wanted to keep his job working at an ice cream parlor rather than becoming a singer?
wasn't that story about Kenny's songwriter friend, that worked at an ice cream parlor? (maybe you were too busy thinking about "The Fox" by Ylvis to hear correctly.) ;)
