- Casey mentioned that Madonna has had at least one hit song on the chart for 22 straight years which was obviously R&R's feat since Madonna never charted at all in 1988 when AT40 used Billboard's charts (either during Casey or Shadoe Stevens' run) When Casey started Casey's Top 40 in 1989, their history changed to R&R which eventually became Mediabase (in one form or another) and that's what Ryan's stats reference as well. In fact, Ryan repeated that stat in 2006 when Madonna was on the chart with "Hung Up" making it 24 consecutive calendar years of chart hits for Madonna.

This week's AT40 shows: June 29, 1974. Also, the 2nd part of the new series #1 Hits of the 1970s is available as a bonus show. July 10, 1982. Also, The July 4, 1987 special Top 40 Hits of the 1980s is available as a bonus show. ^^ Didn't mean to preempt your regular posting. I honestly forgot what day it was. Oops! :( No biggie. I actually had to go to work Today. Now to explain the 6/29/1974 show scheduled to air this weekend. It is one of two original Casey-hosted AT40 shows in which an incomplete Billboard chart ran (6/9/1973 when the Hot 100 was revamped was another). For this show, the AT40 staff tried to guess what Billboard's Top 40 would look like in advance of the actual chart as Casey Kasem was about to depart for a few weeks to tape a guest appearance on "Hawaii Five-O". In the end, they got three out of 40 (the top two plus #34) correct. Here was the actual Billboard chart for 6/29/1974 (AT40 positions in parentheses) LW TW 03 01 Gordon Lightfoot - Sundown (1) 01 02 Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods - Billy, Don't Be A Hero (2) 02 03 The Stylistics - You Make Me Feel Brand New (4) 05 04 William DeVaughn - Be Thankful For What You Got (3) 07 05 Olivia Newton-John - If You Love Me (Let Me Know) (7) 12 06 The Hues Corporation - Rock The Boat (5) 09 07 Kool & The Gang - Hollywood Swinging (8) 06 08 Paul McCartney & Wings - Band On The Run (10) 15 09 George McCrae - Rock Your Baby (6) 27 10 John Denver - Annie's Song (16) 21 11 The Hollies - The Air That I Breathe (13) 16 12 Anne Murray - You Won't See Me (23) 17 13 Gladys Knight & The Pips - On And On (11) 04 14 Ray Stevens - The Streak (9) 19 15 Mac Davis - One Hell Of A Woman (18) 08 16 Jackson 5 - Dancing Machine (12) 25 17 Steely Dan - Rikki, Don't Lose That Number (20) 20 18 The Spinners - I'm Coming Home (19) 24 19 The Righteous Brothers - Rock And Roll Heaven (14) 26 20 Blue Magic - Sideshow (26) 11 21 Maria Muldaur - Midnight At The Oasis (22) 10 22 Marvin Hamlisch - The Entertainer (25) 13 23 The O'Jays - For The Love Of Money (15) 14 24 Carly Simon - Haven't Got Time For The Pain (17) 28 25 Ozark Mountain Daredevils - If You Wanna Get To Heaven (27) 18 26 The DeFranco Family - Save The Last Dance For Me (21) 31 27 Cher - Train Of Thought (24) 22 28 Jim Stafford - My Girl Bill (31) 40 29 Golden Earring - Radar Love (28) 39 30 ABBA - Waterloo (29) 23 31 Joni Mitchell - Help Me (32) 34 32 The Eagles - Already Gone (30) 29 33 Grand Funk Railroad - The Loco-Motion (39) DE 34 Elvis Presley - If You Talk In Your Sleep (34) DE 35 The Impressions - Finally Got Myself Together (I'm A Changed Man) (37) 32 36 Three Dog Night - The Show Must Go On (NR) DE 37 Bachman-Turner Overdrive - Takin' Care Of Business (35) 30 38 Cat Stevens - Oh Very Young (NR) DE 39 Jim Croce - Workin' At The Car Wash Blues (36) DE 40 Jimmy Buffett - Come Monday (38) The two songs AT40 guessed that didn't make the actual chart were (actual Billboard positions in parentheses) 33: ZZ Top - La Grange (41) 40: Wet Willie - Keep On Smilin' (44) "Keep On Smilin'" would eventually hit the Top 40 the following week and eventually peaked at #10. As for "La Grange", unfortunately #41 would be its' peak but it continues to be a staple on classic rock stations. Here are the optional extras for this week's show Hour #1: "The Night Chicago Died" - Paper Lace (#74) Hour #2: "Rock Me Gently" - Andy Kim (#66) Hour #3: "You And Me Against The World" - Helen Reddy (#63)

I...think, this was the first show to feature Larry Morgan as Premiere's announcer, though the parts he does this weekend are clearly new, including the extra choices. Incidentally, none of them repeat, as they were: "Should I Stay or Should I Go", "Paperlate", "Think I'm in Love", and "Valley Girl".
- Casey's Special Report on Soap Operas turning to music had very interesting timing, given that three songs would ride that very wave to become future Top 10 hits in the rest of the decade to follow, and the first of those had just completed its original, less successful, Hot 100 run only a couple months before.
- Story behind "Respect" as an Extra: Casey spotlights the only recording act to have won a Grammy Award for eight years in a row in the same category - Aretha Franklin, for Best Rhythm & Blues Vocal Performance by a Female from 1967 to 1974.
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Early in the Morning"
- #1 on the Country chart: "Don't Worry 'Bout Me Baby" by Janie Fricke
- #1 on the Album chart: Asia

July 10, 1982. Also, The July 4, 1987 special Top 40 Hits of the 1980s is available as a bonus show. I heard the July 10, 1982 show this morning. Since 12 PM, I've been listening to American Top 40: The '80s--Top Hits of the 1980s So Far. WJDX-FM (105.1 The River) is airing both shows.

It was the first '80s show that Larry voiced though the first classic AT40 show he did was 6/9/1973 a few weeks earlier. Interestingly, Mike Kasem (who did voiceovers for the '70s and '80s shows between January and July 2009) voiced the 7/15/1978 show that aired the same week as 7/10/1982. By next week, Larry began voicing both '70s and '80s shows.

Notable since while he'd always point out where songs had hit #1 in other countries, stating that they were current #1s elsewhere seems to have been less common.
- The second question letter, asking the oldest person to ever hit the Top 40, unfortunately has a wrong answer - Moms Mobley was 75, not 72, when "Abraham, Martin, and John" hit #35, thus putting Gordon Sinclair in second.
- "1999" had something of an extended version played, with extra lyrics heard in the song that usually don't get heard.
- Two of the original segments in the final hour - 6/5 and 4/3 - were joined together to make one extra-long segment.
- #1 on the Country chart: "The Closer You Get" by Alabama (new #1)
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Juicy Fruit" by Mtume (6th week)
- #1 on the Album chart: Thriller by Michael Jackson (19th non-consecutive week)

NOTES: - Another one from the "Extended" files: This time, "Always". In a sense it was extended two ways - the first, in its chart life, unexpectedly dropping only one notch this week. More to the point: There was an additional instrumental break near the end that hasn't been in any other show I've heard.
- Also another show with Lionel Richie on both LDDs. There's one other time with, I believe it's him solo and him on a Commodores song, but I don't remember what week it is, other than I'm pretty sure it's from 1984.
- For "Here I Go Again", they played the same version that AT40 played from week to week. Same story as with "The Safety Dance", two weeks ago.
- "I Want Your Sex", of all songs, received the softer jingle.
- Quite puzzling that Casey didn't read the week's #1 Dance song alongside the other Billboard #1s this week, considering that it was "I Wanna Dance With Somebody", and he even said it was in its outro.
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Fake" by Alexander O'Neal
- #1 on the Country chart: "The Weekend" by Steve Wariner
- #1 on the Album chart: Whitney by Whitney Houston

1. Looking at Pete's book in terms of 1984, here are the exact cases in which one act had both LDDs that week 3/31 (aired last year): Carole King - "You've Got A Friend" and "So Far Away" 6/9 (aired last year): Olivia Newton-John - "Magic" and "I Honestly Love You" 7/28 (aired in 2011): Lionel Richie - "Hello" and "Still" (with the Commodores)2. This was the first time Casey did NOT mention the title of George Michael's song. He did mention the title during the first three weeks it charted (6/20, 6/27 and 7/4). Charlie Van Dyke did not mention said song title the two weeks he subbed for Casey (yet he mentioned the title the only other time he subbed for Casey during it's chart run on 9/12. Go figure.)

Forgive my lateness. I just got home from work and I had to take the bus. I'm back home now and ready to get to my AT40 preview.
As reported earlier, the '70s is another two-show week so once again my weekend preview will be a two-parter. As always, the '80s (airing now on WWIS) come first.
"AT40: The '80s" this week presents 8/4/1984. This show originally aired back in 2008.
Four songs debuted this week: "All Of You" - Julio Iglesias & Diana Ross (#36) "Dynamite" - Jermaine Jackson (#37) "Leave A Tender Moment Alone" - Billy Joel (#39) "When You Close Your Eyes" - Night Ranger (#40)
Four songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Dance Hall Days" - Wang Chung (#24) "The Heart Of Rock 'n Roll" - Huey Lewis & The News (#27) "No Way Out" - Jefferson Starship (#28) "Boys Do Fall In Love" - Robin Gibb (#40)
Biggest Mover: "Stuck On You" - Lionel Richie (#15 to #8) Biggest Dropper: "The Reflex" - Duran Duran (#21 to #35)
Original extras: None
Long Distance Dedications: "Hello" - Lionel Richie "Looks Like We Made It" - Barry Manilow
Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "We're Not Gonna Take It" - Twisted Sister (#57) Hour #2: "Go Insane" - Lindsey Buckingham (#58) Hour #3: "My Oh My" - Slade (#42) Hour #4: "I'm So Excited" - The Pointer Sisters (#87; debut of re-release)
The '70s preview will be coming up soon.

Before I get to my recap of this weekend's 1979 show, I have some corrections for the 1970 AT40 show. Premiere apparently changed up the extras since the 2011 airing. "Can't Buy Me Love" and "Gentle On My Mind" were in the show this time while "Alley Oop" was played as the Hour #3 optional extra (the Hour #2 optional extra was the Four Seasons "Big Girls Don't Cry" which was from the 7/25/1970 show)
Now, as Casey would say, on with the countdown. :)
July 28, 1979
LW #3: Donna Summer "Hot Stuff" LW #2: Anita Ward "Ring My Bell" LW #1: Donna Summer "Bad Girls" 12 40 Rickie Lee Jones - Chuck E's In Love (4) DE 39 Bonnie Pointer - Heaven Must Have Sent You (11) 40 38 Pink Lady - Kiss In The Dark (37) DE 37 The Cars - Let's Go (14) DE 36 Spyro Gyra - Morning Dance (24) DE 35 Dionne Warwick - I'll Never Love This Way Again (5) LDD: The Little River Band "Reminiscing" From the Senior Class of Palmyra (sp?) High School to Rick, who is spending his Senior Year at a learning program in Australia. 17 34 Gerry Rafferty - Days Gone Down (17) AT40 Archives: From November 1974 - John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Nuclear Band "Whatever Gets You Thru The Night", the 118th #1 of the decade. Flashback Extra: Herb Alpert "Rise" 37 33 Charlie Daniels Band - The Devil Went Down To Georgia (3) 20 32 Poco - Heart Of The Night (20) DE 31 Earth, Wind & Fire - After The Love Has Gone (2) 33 30 Eddie Rabbitt - Suspicions (13) 30 29 Wet Willie - Weekend (29) 28 28 James Taylor - Up On The Roof (28) 31 27 Joe Jackson - Is She Really Going Out With Him (21) 29 26 Blondie - One Way Or Another (24) 25 25 Anne Murray - Shadows In The Moonlight (25) 26 24 Kansas - People Of The Southwind (23) 32 23 Robert John - Sad Eyes (1) AT40 Archives: From November 1974 - Billy Swan "I Can Help", the 119th #1 of the decade. Flashback Extra: Supertramp "Goodbye Stranger" 15 12 Raydio - You Can't Change That (9) 06 11 Earth, Wind & Fire with The Emotions - Boogie Wonderland (6) 16 10 Barbra Streisand - The Main Event/Fight (3) 11 09 Dr. Hook - When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman (6) 08 08 Electric Light Orchestra - Shine A Little Love (8) 07 07 Cheap Trick - I Want You To Want Me (7) 09 06 John Stewart - Gold (5) 05 05 David Naughton - Makin' It (5) 03 04 Donna Summer - Hot Stuff (1) 04 03 Chic - Good Times (1) Flashback Extra: The Little River Band "Lonesome Loser", which was a week away from entering the countdown that week. 02 02 Anita Ward - Ring My Bell (1) 01 01 Donna Summer - Bad Girls (1)
- Stations of the Week: WODC and KOKZ (WODC actually aired the 1979 show early for once but skipped the Herb Alpert extra due to time constraints; wound up listening to KOKZ for the remainder of this recap) - Casey noted that "Up On The Roof" is James Taylor's sixth remake. I assume he was basing this on past Top 40 hits (Carole King's "You've Got A Friend" was not released as a single). For the record, James had three remakes on his own ("How Sweet It Is" and "Handy Man" were the others), one in a trio ("What A Wonderful World" with Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel), and two with his then-wife Carly Simon ("Mockingbird" and "Devoted To You") - Casey admitted that the second LDD caused a divide with the AT40 staff as far as the subject of divorce from the ex-wife's perspective is concerned - #1 Soul: Good Times - #1 Country: "You're The Only One" - Dolly Parton - #1 Disco: Born To Be Alive - #1 Album: Bad Girls

I noticed that Casey mentions The Beatles "Can't Buy Me Love" as the record for making the biggest jump from 27 to 1. In recent years you see jumps like 97–1 (96 positions) by Kelly Clarkson — "My Life Would Suck Without You" (February 7, 2009). Does anyone else every think how weird it is in this digital download age that the past records keep getting smashed?

I think older records are more phenomenal than the digital age records. The digital age records had more to do with timing the release strategy of a #1 hit which was done repeatedly.
Withhold the release of a big hit just long enough to give it enough airplay to chart at #90 or whatever, then release the single and have it shoot to #1 the next week. Not interesting after it happens so many times.
With streaming as a component and digital sales less of a factor, nowadays that won't happen. Prior to 1998, it didn't happen either because songs could not chart without a single release (so airplay only - wouldn't do it

That record is the one that made me mad in 98, as Billboard did not make up their mind as to whether R. Kelly & Celine Dion broke the record or debuted at number 1. Still to this date, the song is not acknowledged as a #1 debut when they rank all the songs that did, nor it is mentioned as one of the biggest climbers to number 1. I like to call it the "Limbo" song. Haha
