Happy birthday to a certain someone in this week's countdown. :) No, that doesn't get mentioned, but Casey does point out how she moved into second place for most solo #1s among women. August 16, 1986 40 -- Stacey Q - Two of Hearts (3) 39 -- Daryl Hall - Dreamtime (5) 38 25 Andy Taylor - Take it Easy (24) 37 17 Billy Joel - Modern Woman (10) 36 21 The Blow Monkeys - Digging Your Scene (14) 35 35 Device - Hanging On a Heart Attack (35)34 37 Double - The Captain of Her Heart (16) 33 40 Billy Ocean - Love Zone (10) 32 32 Mike & The Mechanics - Taken In (32)LDD: Air Supply "Just As I Am" from Star in Memphis, TN to her son, who she recently put up for adoption to give him a chance at being cared for by people who would love him (due to her father's and brothers' prejudice against him for being mixed race), and to her mother and sister, who feel she made the right decision Flashback Extra: Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam With Full Force "All Cried Out"31 36 Glass Tiger - Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone) (2) 30 -- Run DMC - Walk This Way (4) 29 19 The Pet Shop Boys - Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money) (10) 28 30 John Cougar Mellencamp - Rumbleseat (28)27 31 Klymaxx - Man Size Love (19) 26 14 Janet Jackson - Nasty (3) 25 29 The Monkees - That Was Then, This is Now (20) 24 33 Huey Lewis & The News - Stuck With You (1) 23 28 David Lee Roth - Yankee Rose (16) 22 24 Gavin Christopher - One Step Closer to You (22)LDD: Lionel Richie "Truly" from Don in Texas to Karen in Michigan, who he met and fell in love with while she was on a trip to Texas Flashback Extra: Loverboy "Heaven in Your Eyes"21 11 Genesis - Invisible Touch (1) 20 27 Miami Sound Machine - Words Get in the Way (5) 19 22 The Outfield - All the Love in the World (19)18 26 Regina - Baby Love (10) 17 20 Journey - Suzanne (17)16 07 Kenny Loggins - Danger Zone (2) 15 23 Gloria Loring & Carl Anderson - Friends and Lovers (2) 14 16 Jeffrey Osborne - You Should Be Mine (The Woo Woo Song) (13)13 04 Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer (1) 12 15 Michael McDonald - Sweet Freedom (7) 11 06 Rod Stewart - Love Touch (6) Flashback Extra: Van Halen "Love Walks In", a couple of weeks away from reaching the countdown10 12 Wham! - The Edge of Heaven (10)09 18 Berlin - Take My Breath Away (1)LDD: Joe Cocker "You Are So Beautiful" from 12-year-old Rochelle to her aunt, who she's lived with for two years and who's had to give up a lot to care for her08 10 The Timex Social Club - Rumours (8)07 13 Lionel Richie - Dancing on the Ceiling (2) 06 09 Bananarama - Venus (1) 05 05 Jermaine Stewart - We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off (5)04 08 Steve Winwood - Higher Love (1) 03 03 Belinda Carlisle - Mad About You (3)Flashback Extra: Janet Jackson "When I Think of You"02 01 Peter Cetera - Glory of Love (1) 01 02 Madonna - Papa Don't Preach (1)Three records fell out of the Top 40 this week. The droppers are: "Holding Back the Years", the former #1 song from Simply Red (LW: 34), "Your Wildest Dreams" by The Moody Blues (LW: 38), and "Who's Johnny?" by El DeBarge (LW: 39). NOTES: - You could hear somebody, possibly Casey himself, snapping their fingers during his tease at the end of the first hour.
- Question Letter with a countdown answer: "That Was Then, This is Now" setting a new record for longest gap between Top 40 hits for a group.
- Casey called "Take My Breath Away" the hottest record in the countdown, thus the color tag for them and not "Stuck With You", which also had a 9-notch jump. All things considered though, the jump for Berlin is easily the more impressive of the two.
- No softer jingle this week, not even for "The Captain of Her Heart".
- Interesting how the peaking songs are all spread out throughout the countdown this week.
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Do You Get Enough Love" by Shirley Jones
- #1 on the Dance chart: "Venus"
- #1 on the Country chart: "You're the Last Thing I Needed Tonight" by John Schneider
- #1 on the Album chart: True Blue by Madonna

What was more unusual - the finger snap or Casey's rap? :) And correct me if I'm wrong but was this the first '80s countdown in which Larry Morgan has referred to Casey in closing as "the legend where the countdown began" (which references him as deceased)? Larry has used this closing in recent '70s countdowns (it was even dubbed into the 8/13/1977 show that Premiere last ran two years ago this past weekend).

No. He started doing that either with 6/22/85 or 6/30/84. Forget which, but it was one of those two.

Yay - a show I've posted once on already! :) (P.S. With shows that Premiere first aired in the second half of 2009 or later, their own extras will usually be the same on repeat airings. This week is no exception.) August 22, 1981 LW #1: Diana Ross & Lionel Richie "Endless Love"40 32 Jim Steinman - Rock 'N Roll Dreams Come Through (32) 39 30 Frankie Smith - Double Dutch Bus (30) 38 22 Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes (1) 37 15 The Alan Parsons Project - Time (15)36 40 Balance - Breaking Away (22) 35 -- Sheena Easton - For Your Eyes Only (4) 34 -- Lulu - I Could Never Miss You (More Than I Do) (18) 33 12 Air Supply - The One That You Love (1) 32 34 Rex Smith & Rachel Sweet - Everlasting Love (32)AT40 Archives: From May 1967 - The Supremes "The Happening", the 163rd #1 of the 60s Flashback Extra: The Rolling Stones "Start Me Up", the week's highest debut at #6131 39 The Moody Blues - The Voice (15) 30 37 The Beach Boys - The Beach Boys Medley (12) 29 31 Stacy Lattisaw - Love on a Two Way Street (26) 28 33 Electric Light Orchestra - Hold On Tight (10) LDD: Olivia Newton-John "I Honestly Love You" from Linda in Petoskey, MI to her husband Rich, who fell in love with her despite her problems and stood by her despite her mistakes27 29 Franke & The Knockouts - You're My Girl (27) 26 28 Robbie Patton - Don't Give it Up (26)25 36 Ray Parker Jr. & Raydio - That Old Song (21) 24 26 Alabama - Feels So Right (20) 23 27 Eddie Rabbitt - Step By Step (5) 22 24 Pat Benatar - Fire and Ice (17) AT40 Archives: From May 1967 - The Young Rascals "Groovin' ", the 164th #1 of the 60s Flashback Extra: Rick James "Superfreak", described as "bubbling just under the countdown"21 23 Gary Wright - Really Wanna Know You (16) 20 25 The Greg Kihn Band - The Breakup Song (They Don't Write 'Em) (15) 19 19 Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight (19)18 20 deleted Cruise - Cool Love (13) 17 17 Billy Squier - The Stroke (17) 16 16 The Carpenters - Touch Me When We're Dancing (16)15 18 Foreigner - Urgent (4) AT40 Extra: Creedence Clearwater Revival "Lookin' Out My Back Door", one of a record five #2 hits from an artist who never hit #114 14 John Schneider - It's Now or Never (14)13 05 The Oak Ridge Boys - Elvira (5) 12 08 Marty Balin - Hearts (8) AT40 Archives: From June 1967 - Aretha Franklin "Respect", the 165th #1 of the 60s Flashback Extra: Christopher Cross "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)"11 13 Journey - Who's Crying Now (4) 10 11 The Commodores - Lady (You Bring Me Up) (8) 09 10 Ronnie Milsap - (There's) No Gettin' Over Me (5) 08 09 Juice Newton - Queen of Hearts (2) 07 07 Manhattan Transfer - Boy From New York City (7)06 21 Stevie Nicks & Tom Petty - Stop Draggin' My Heart Around (3)05 04 Rick Springfield - Jessie's Girl (1) 04 06 The Pointer Sisters - Slow Hand (2) 03 03 Kenny Rogers - I Don't Need You (3)Flashback Extra: Squeeze "Tempted"02 02 Joey Scarbury - Theme From Greatest American Hero (Believe it or Not) (2) 01 01 Diana Ross & Lionel Richie - Endless Love (1)NOTES: - OK, WCRZ is certainly noted for their inconsistency with the 80s Extras. But who knew that they would opt to play all four on the week that I opted to sleep in and miss the WIDL airing?
- BUT THE BAD NEWS IS: They also skipped the first segment of the final hour (songs 11-9). >:(
- A rather inauspicious beginning to this countdown, with the first four songs all falling - three of them right from their peaks! (Not counting last week's #1, which started the show.) Although, even more inauspicious was The Tubes' departure from the 40 - all the way to #82! :o
- Casey played the first verse of the original "Bette Davis Eyes" by Jackie DeShannon before playing what was then "the biggest hit of the 1980s".
- Both debuts were pretty high up for being the only two debuts - and, as noted by Casey, both are from Scottish women.
- The other four #2 hits from Creedence Clearwater Revival: "Bad Moon Rising", "Green River", "Proud Mary", and "Travelin' Band".
- Casey certainly had a number of interesting stories and ways to spice up the countdown this week...such as his soap opera-style intro to "Jessie's Girl".
- BUT THE BAD NEWS IS: He was also a bit off his game in terms of chart-watching this week - he announced "That Old Song" as first moving up nine notches, then eleven. Then he announced "I Don't Need You" as first spending its third week at #3, then its second. Lastly, he announced "Theme From Greatest American Hero" as first moving up a notch, then holding.
- Something you wouldn't find often...all of the artists behind this week's #1s on Billboard's other charts could be found in the countdown, and no two were the same.
- #1 on the Country chart: "I Don't Need You"
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Endless Love"
- #1 on the Album chart: 4 by Foreigner (title announced as Foreigner 4)
- And, to top it all off...the show has "Endless Love" at #1, and airs on a day (in 2010) when no less than six of my friends all had weddings - two with each other!

I didn't have all four of Premiere's extras listed though, just two. The four are: Hour #1: "Islands In The Stream" - Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton (#43) Hour #2: "Delirious" - Prince (#74; debuted) Hour #3: "Suddenly Last Summer" - The Motels (#60; debuted) Hour #4: "Solsbury Hill" - Peter Gabriel (#86) ETA: And as luck would have it, WCRZ played all four last night. Go figure!

...Welp. After playing all four extras last week, guess how many WCRZ plays this week? Unlike last week's show, I originally skipped this one back in 2009. I was more so-so on 1980 a few years ago, and opted for finding something to do on campus instead. Given my notes below, looks like this show turned out to be much more interesting than I gave it credit for. September 13, 1980 LW #3: The Rolling Stones "Emotional Rescue" LW #2: Christopher Cross "Sailing" LW #1: Diana Ross "Upside Down"40 -- The Larsen-Feiten Band - Who'll Be the Fool Tonight (29) 39 -- Livingston Taylor - First Time Love (38) 38 -- Amy Holland - How Do I Survive (22) 37 20 The Commodores - Old-Fashion Love (20) 36 14 Kim Carnes - More Love (10)35 37 Jermaine Jackson - You're Supposed to Keep Your Love For Me (34) 34 15 Billy Joel - It's Still Rock & Roll to Me (1) 33 -- Barbra Streisand - Woman in Love (1) 32 38 Dionne Warwick - No Night So Long (23) AT40 Archives: From June 1961 - Pat Boone "Moody River", the 31st #1 of the 60s31 32 Robert John - Hey There Lonely Girl (31) 30 31 Hall & Oates - How Does it Feel to Be Back (30)29 39 Boz Scaggs - Look What You've Done to Me (14) LDD: Joe Cocker "You Are So Beautiful" from Dawn in Davenport, IA to Fred, her husband/boyfriend of six years (she doesn't say explicitly for sure; she does mention a six-year anniversary, but that's also how long they've been dating) who's been stationed in the Army in South Korea28 40 The Doobie Brothers - Real Love (5) 27 33 The Pointer Sisters - He's So Shy (3) 26 30 Stephanie Mills - Never Knew Love Like This Before (6) 25 29 Carly Simon - Jesse (11) 24 12 Pete Townshend - Let My Love Open the Door (9) 23 25 Natalie Cole - Someone That I Used to Love (21) 22 08 The S.O.S. Band - Take Your Time (Do it Right) (3) AT40 Archives: From July 1961 - Gary U.S. Bonds "Quarter to Three", the 32nd #1 of the 60s21 24 Billy Joel - Don't Ask Me Why (19) 20 22 Robbie Dupree - Hot Rod Hearts (15) 19 19 Jackson Browne - Boulevard (19)18 21 The Electric Light Orchestra - All Over the World (13) 17 26 Olivia Newton-John & The Electric Light Orchestra - Xanadu (8) 16 18 Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - You'll Accomp'ny Me (14) 15 16 Larry Graham - One in a Million You (9) 14 17 Ambrosia - You're the Only Woman (13) 13 06 Olivia Newton-John - Magic (1) 12 27 Kenny Loggins - I'm Alright (7)11 11 Benny Mardones - Into the Night (11)AT40 Archives: From July 1961 - Bobby Lewis "Tossin' and Turnin' ", the 33rd #1 of the 60s10 13 Eddie Rabbitt - Drivin' My Life Away (5) 09 23 Queen - Another One Bites the Dust (1) 08 10 Johnny Lee - Lookin' For Love (5) LDD: Leo Sayer "When I Need You" from Robert in Hamilton, New Zealand in memory of Angela, a nurse who essentially became a primary caretaker/therapist for him after he was run down by a drunk driver - he was bitter at the world since he was left paralyzed from the waist down, which ruined his hopes of competing in the Olympics, and she told him to appreciate what chances he had been given compared to those who've had no chances; she would soon herself be thrown from a horse and die of her injuries, and her memory is what spurs Robert forward today07 09 Paul Simon - Late in the Evening (6) 06 07 George Benson - Give Me the Night (6)05 02 Christopher Cross - Sailing (1) 04 05 Irene Cara - Fame (4) 03 03 The Rolling Stones - Emotional Rescue (3) 02 04 Air Supply - All Out of Love (2) 01 01 Diana Ross - Upside Down (1)NOTES: - Fun fact: Livingston Taylor would debut here at #39, next week climb to #38, then two weeks after that...POOF! Gone from the Hot 100.
- The first three segments (Last Week's Top 3, #40, #39-#38) were all bumpered together. (See also: 10-12-85, with the third, fourth, and fifth segments in Hour 2 bumpered together - in that case, though, 3 + 4 originally only had one song each.)
- Three huge double-digit drops to the Bottom 10 should guarantee a few debuts for the following week, right? Not so much. Not only would not a single one of those plummeting songs fall out, but 9-20 would turn out to be one of only three weeks in the entire decade where only one song debuted within the 40 (the other two being 10-19-85 and 10-7-89). The song that did fall out? "Hey There Lonely Girl".
- Remember back on 5-3-86 when I made such a big deal out of all the "love" songs in that week's countdown? Well, this week offers even more love (and more...joy...!) - 11 songs in this week's survey have the word "love" in their title, compared to 9 that week.
- Another better-timed chart story: A Question Letter asking what the first #1 album was. It was a Nat King Cole album - and guess whose song that Question Letter led in to? ;)
- How about that second segment in Hour 3 - Robbie Dupree sings about Hot Rod Hearts out on the Boulevard, which Jackson Browne then proceeds to sing about in the very next song! That same segment would cause ELO's back-to-back to get broken up, however, as "All Over the World" would be tacked on to that segment rather than sharing one with "Xanadu".
- Casey outro-ed "I'm Alright" as one of the biggest movers of the week. Later, during the intro to "Another One Bites the Dust", he'd clarify that it was the biggest (though Queen's second-biggest jump was no slouch!).
- Unusually, "Sailing" had its second verse cut both times it was played. Now, at first it might not seem strange to shorten an ex-#1 song so, but typically during these shows one of "last week's Top 3" will end up shortened either its first or second time played, but not both.
- #1 on the Country chart: "Lookin' For Love"
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Give Me the Night"
- #1 on the LP chart: Hold Out by Jackson Browne

(1) Incidentally...WCRZ cut off the Top 2 last time. Hopefully they don't make that mistake again... 1980 extras (for reference): Whip It: Described as "spending a third week on the Hot 100" You Shook Me (All Night Long): Described as "slowly climbing the Hot 100" Turn It On Again: Described as "spending a second week in the Hot 100" There was no chart action described for "Lola" whatsoever. And thanks for handling this weekend's '80s preview for me. Especially since the '70s has two shows this weekend - the "B" from last year (9/9/1972) and the "A" show from 9/22/1979. Saves me from doing a two-part post. :) I'll handle the full '70s preview either Thursday or Friday (maybe during the Bucs game if it gets out of hand).
