New label (Sugar Hill) and new album (September) for Lee Ann Womack. Lee Ann Womack Signs with Sugar Hill/Welk Music GroupI have zero confidence in radio touching anything on here, but high hopes it's going to be a huge critical success, and just a solid country album.

Canada's Steven Lee Olsen is signed to Sony Nashville (no official roster decision yet). The rate this label is singing singers, they'll need a new banner opened again.

There was no formal announcement, not even in Aircheck, but in Friday's daily Aircheck email there was a picture with a caption indicating that Capitol has added a new artist, Joey Hyde, to their roster. The captioned picture can also be seen at this link (top image under "Photo Gallery"). Hyde is on his radio tour so he must've signed with them recently. This is the first I have heard of him.

I believe he's been with them for over a year much like Savannah Keyes was with BMLG for a while but they're just announcing now. I remember seeing his name listed on a roster list sometime last year around CRS.

Wow, apparently there's another new artist on Sony's roster: a guy by the name of Ben Rue. He posted the following to his Facebook page just 4 days ago: And his first single is already going for adds in less than 2 weeks..? SourceIt just lists Sony Music Nashville as the label, rather than Arista, Columbia, or RCA. Weird that they just signed him and are rushing a single out there without a full radio tour (which, as far as I understand, typically last up to 6 weeks or so).

Dying to know what Sony label this guys is on. I had heard Colombia signed another new artist. Right now they are already promoting Tyler Farr and Chace Rice (ugh). Then Leah Turner also has new music coming next week, now here comes Ben Rue (maybe or maybe not on Colombia). I worry because Casey James is supposed to have a single in the next month. I am really hoping for it to do well. Don't want Colombia too busy with everyone else. Hopefully Farr and Rice will be done by then.

I suppose Rue could go there and be the 7th but Columbia (formerly BNA) has operated with at most 4-5 artists for the last few years, and now they have 6...so I would guess Ben Rue will go to Arista or possibly RCA. But I am thinking Sony will need to re-open a 4th imprint. They shut down Columbia a couple years ago and then renamed BNA into Columbia, so they could either bring back the BNA name or an older name like Epic or Monument. They have signed several new artists, some of which haven't been assigned to a specific label yet.

I'm personally hoping Lucky Dog is the name they bring back cause I always liked that one, but Epic makes the most sence since it's the one with the most history. That is assuming they bring a 4th label back. They definatley have enough artists to do so. 01. Angie Johnson 02. Ben Rue 03. Brad Hodges 04. Brad Paisley 05. Carly Pearce 06. Carrie Underwood 07. Casey James 08. Chase Rice 09. Chris Young 10. Dee Jay Silver 11. Go Down Moses 12. The Hennigsens 13. Jake Owen 14. Jerrod Niemann 15. Josh Dorr 16. Kenny Chesney 17. Kix Brooks 18. Leah Turner 19. Love And Theft 20. Miranda Lambert 21. Sara Evans 22. Steven Lee Olsen 23. The Swon Brothers 24. Tyler Farr And sometimes Kelly Clarkson & Pistol Annies.

From Country Aircheck:
» Beat Around The Bush: Longtime Sugarland producer Byron Gallimore will produce the first solo album from the duo's Kristian Bush. The project will be released on Streamsound, which Gallimore co-owns. "After working on four records with Sugarland, I know Kristian's musical abilities well," says Gallimore. "He is a great singer, songwriter and all-around musician. I am thrilled to be working with him on this album and proud to have him as part of our Streamsound Records family. The music he is getting ready to drop on Country radio is some of the most exciting I've heard in years." Adds Bush, "I'm so excited to be working with Byron Gallimore again. I'm constantly surprised at how creative I feel and how innovative he is every time we hit record." Bush is currently on his 2014 Put Your Soul In It Tour; the first single is expected this summer.

I really enjoy Chase Rice and Tyler Farr. IMO, Sony should cut ties with Kix Brooks, Dee Jay Silver and Pistol Annies. Brooks tanked in his first solo effort and his voice is not that great. The Pistol Annies are great but I feel Sony is keeping them to keep Miranda Lambert happy. With Silver, my hope is that he leaves because he has done nothing except put together re-mixes of music plus he really isn't a country artist. I could see Kix eventually leaving, simply because he doesn't seem likely to put out too many albums, and he obviously isn't going to get a lot of radio support outside of Cumulus. But Dee Jay Silver has an increasingly popular (ugh) syndicated radio show and, love him or hate him, he will probably make money for the label even if he never gets substantial airplay with said remixes or his original material (and he is working on a full-length album of original material, btw). Silver seems like the type that could develop a solid little 'niche' and sell fairly well just as Colt Ford has done despite minimal airplay. Regarding Miranda, I don't really understand that comment. I'm sure she's plenty happy. Sony doesn't seem willing to push the Pistol Annies to radio, but I don't think that was ever the intent when the girls formed that group. And to be perfectly honest, that's probably completely fine by Sony. They don't have to waste any money promoting the PA to radio, and yet the Annies albums have been able to out-sell almost all other Sony acts' albums other than those by Carrie, Brad, Kenny, and Miranda. In other words, the Annies are successful, they make money for the label, and overall they are simply a very good investment for Sony.

I'm not so sure Kix is going to leave Sony anytime soon. I'm pretty sure he can do whatever he wants for his next album and I can see Sony being happy with him so long as he sells a little. Most of what he'll put out from now on will probably be done more because he wants to and I don't think he's chasing stardom anymore. Meaning he'll be a small expence that will probably make back it's investment pretty easily.
I hope he doesn't disappear anyway, I know I'm in the extreme minority but I like his voice, songwriting and song choice. I'm looking forward to album #2.

The only reason I think he might wind up leaving would be length of contract...I could see his contract with Sony being a short-term one since he was never really the voice of B&D. But yeah, he's definitely not really an expense so if he and Sony want to stay partners for a while that wouldn't surprise me either. I agree that he's not chasing stardom (but whether you like him or not, he probably would never be a big name solo artist even if he tried).

Kix is a radio institution at this point with his various shows and smartly segued into that field after his artist career was basically over with B&D (Ronnie's implosion, that's another story). Sony likely will keep him on its roster as long as Gary Overton is running the label.
The label is in the position that WB Nashville was around 2008. They have some established stars doing fine and until recently it was hard to move the needle on newcomers. They've also got a plethora of newcomers.
As for Dee Jay Silver. I think he's poised to be Country's answer to Avicii, if his stuff is done right.

He's been on their roster for more than a year now. I know it being Curb and all that, but why has there not been a CD released by Mo Pitney? I just looked at your first post in the thread and yes, he is listed there.

I know this has been chatted about in a few threads, but I thought I would post it here also to allow for some more centralized discussion. From Country Aircheck:
I don't know if Craig Campbell's single will die in its tracks (it might linger for another couple weeks), but Lucy Hale's single will certainly disappear, and Ryan Kinder's excellent debut is unlikely to even get off the ground now :(
To be honest, I'm not that surprised by this announcement. BPG has really struggled. They had a few good years but for the last couple of years now they haven't had any break-out hits...a couple top 20's from Chris Cagle and Craig Campbell but neither of those guys has had any big-selling albums or hot-selling singles either. Basically it just didn't seem like anyone on the roster was big enough to pull in enough money for the label.
I feel bad for Rachel Bradshaw, she's been there for years and never got a single out. And Chelsea Bain just signed with them a few months back after putting out music for an even smaller label.
At the very least I hope Ryan Kinder and Craig Campbell get picked up by other labels, if BPG is indeed going to be shuttered and unable to regroup.

Also, Southern Ground is restructuring as well. Label president Ken Robold has departed and 3 other staff have departed; Robolod was formerly EVP/GM at UMG Nashville and only joined Southern Ground a year ago. I remember thinking that was a great move for Zac and his label (Ken was heavily involved with Lost Highway and so he seemed a great fit at SG) so I'm a bit surprised to see that Robold is leaving the label. It sounds like the radio promo team will remain intact, though, but the label's focus is only going to be Zac Brown Band...Zac said he still wants to help other up-and-coming artists but it just doesn't seem like the label has the resources to try to launch/promote any of them, and so they're just going to focus on the ZBB's radio presence.
Edit: And I see that Black River's Director of Radio Promotion is also leaving at the end of June, although that doesn't necessarily mean that Black River is having problems. It could just be that Bill Lubitz (the director) might be interested in taking a vacant role at another label. It seems odd to have all these label announcements on the same day, in any case..

Southern Ground doing what they're doing makes sense for now. Honestly, his radio team COULD promote another artist who's semi-established but now looking, but it makes sense to focus on their own stuff for now and see how their transition to fully indie goes. As for Black River, they're owned by a billionaire (the same guy who ownes the Sabres in the NHL and could buy the Bills) and are some sort of priority. They've got Craig Morgan doing alright and hopefully will get traction with John King and maybe Kellie (fingers crossed) so I think that's a label more like Broken Bow was years ago, when Craig originally broke out. Hopefully, John King can be their 'Aldean', the break-out artist whose path was made easier by Craig Morgan. As for where Ryan Kinder and Craig Cambpell go, I hope they land somewhere else soon. Since they were partners with Bigger Picture, it should be easy enough to bring their projects over. Rachel Bradshaw's EP is good but is there room for her somewhere else?

Cool to see you point out that fact Matt. :) Terry Pegula who owns Black River basically has it as a hobby thing because he loves country music, but that doesn't mean he doesn't take it seriously. I think both Craig and Kellie are at a good place to make the music they want to. And I've heard both the CEO of Black River Gordon Kerr and Terry talk swimmingly about John King. Hopefully they can get a few more hits and take on the success of Broken Bow has gotten. Again, it's going to be hard for them (as evidence by the slow chart climbs for Craig's singles other than "Corn Star" and the fact Kellie can't seem to buy a hit right now). But Black River does have the resources to get a breakout single and a breakout artist, and perhaps John King can be that artist that Matt pointed out.

According to Aircheck today, Black River's Director of Promotion Bill Lubitz has accepted a position with the radio promo team at BMLG's new Dot Records. So I am sure Black River will be fine once they fill that spot.
I wonder if any of the Bigger Picture artists might be signed by Dot?

But will they give him the JV agreement that Kinder had with BPG? I could see one of the BPG promo people replacing Bill Lubitz. sabre14, Yes, the Black River owner is not unlike Benny Brown with Broken Bow which is why I see that label doing well (they also have a growing publishing operation and own the SoundStage and Ronnie's Place recording studios.

» Signage: Republic Nashville has signed A Thousand Horses to its roster. The Nashville-based band calls its sound a "blues and booze-infused cocktail of southern rock and country." More here. Source: Country Aircheck Today (05/27) ** Several of their songs are available for streaming at their website (linked above) via a SoundCloud widget. There's one called "Tennessee Whiskey" or something like that that I really enjoyed. They've got a cool sound that sounds a bit more accessible than what I've heard from The Cadillac Three. Definitely a southern rock/country/blues mix but I'm liking what I'm hearing. On a related note...dang, is Scott Borchetta building an empire or what? Six acts signed to Big Machine proper, 6 on Valory, and now 7 on Republic (including Dallas Smith & Savannah Keyes), plus they've just launched Dot Records and Nash Icons.
