Tegan & Sara (Warner Bros.) 40-45k Expecting sales for this week! I'm hoping they can at least double the first week sales of Sainthood (24k) but if not, they're definitely gonna outsell that album and quickly (110k). How much 'The Con' sold?

Wow. That's pretty awesome. Even more exposure for them! Closer is just so effervescent and, dare I say it, SEXY.

I love the sound of their new record. I've never really familiarized myself with any of their material but this is great. This currently is their most critically acclaimed record to date (it has an 81 on Metacritic).

Wow. That surprises me since it's the most poppiest album, especially considering the sound of their previous records. They've gone from acoustic singer/songwriter stuff to grungy-type pop to rock with added electro-influences but never this pop before. It's so interesting to look back on their progression musically and seeing how linear their albums have been chronologically in the musical sense from one to the next. The Con and So Jealous are two of my favourite albums I own so it'll be hard to top them but so far, I'm really enjoying Heartthrob.

I just wrote my review too. www.themaxonline.net/2013/02/06/tegan-and-sara-heartthrob/I think the amazing thing about this album that I've found with So Jealous and The Con, my two favourites from them, is how it feels like it can capture the moment into the songs themselves. If that makes sense. Both So Jealous and The Con came at particularly major periods of my life so when I listen to them, I'm reminded of so much from those periods. So Jealous was what I consider to be my "coming out" album because it was what my friends and I listened to in the basement when we would just chill and do nothing. When I listen to that album as a whole, I remember those times and I actually miss them. I can remember how I felt back then and how strange and scary it was but also how exciting to have finally found myself in some ways. Meanwhile, The Con was released a few weeks after my first bf and I broke up and I considered that a significant event too so when I listen to that album now, I have a lot of post break-up feelings but also feel a sense of newfound freedom and again, the uncertainty. But it's with the song Call It Off that sums up my feelings from that period perfectly. I think Call It Off might be the one song that has captured how I've felt at a particular time more than any other song I can think of and I eventually realized, the reason why it hit me so hard was because of the permanence in the lyrics. "Maybe you(I) would have been something I'd(you'd) be good at/Now we'll never know." There's something so solid in the realization that you've lost something knowing you'll never get it back or re-experience it again but you know that you might be better off even if at the same time you can't help but wonder what if. Sainthood did nothing for me and I almost wonder if maybe it was because it didn't accompany anything that happened in my life. I have high hopes for whatever is going to happen now because I think Heartthrob is up to the same level, both musically and personally, as those two. I'd like to have something to fondly remember whenever I listen to Heartthrob years down the road.

I think after "Closer," my favorite is "Now I'm All Messed Up." Sick production on that one. It's boomy and campy in all the right ways, and Sara's wall-of-sound vocals really hit the sweet spot. Did you guys hear "Closer" on Letterman? I think it's even better live. I wish Kurstin turned up the guitar on the chorus, but it's still so good.

My top 5 favs: 1. I Couldn't Be Your Friend 2. I'm Not Your Hero 3. How Come You Don't Want Me 4. I Was a Fool 5. Now I'm All Messed Up
After "Closer," 2,1, and 4 should be the singles.

The only individual tracks I really like are "Closer" and "Now I'm Messed Up." But as an album, I think it is fantastic -- I probably just wouldn't listen to the other tracks individually, that's all.
I would rank the album below The Con and So Jealous, but not by a lot.

Shock to Your System has become my favorite of the album. I hope they announce a second single soon.

They just made a lyric video for Now I'm All Messed Up, but said it was because it was a fan favourite on the album.
For some reason, I thought I'm Not Your Hero was the second single.

This album is really my first solid exposure to Tegan and Sara and I have to say, i'm mighty impressed. Of course, I realize that this is their big foray into pop music, and that is probably why I'm hearing them now.
Highlights for me are "I Was a Fool" (i am obsessed with this song), "How Come You Don't Want Me," "Love They Say," and "Now I'm All Messed Up."
I can't get over how often they sound like Donna Lewis, and I mean that in a great way.
The one track I don't really care for is "Closer," which of course is the first single. I don't even really like any of the plethora of remixes serviced for this track (surprisingly). But i will be listening to this album a lot more!

Closer is a great song but I wouldn't call it their best song on the album nor their best song period either. But I also wouldn't argue with those that do. It's that good!
I was thinking about their route to what might be mainstream popularity recently and I feel like the best comparison to be made to them thus far is with Our Lady Peace. Not musically but the trajectory of their chart history.
OLP's first album was released in 1994. I think they had a demos or indie release a few years before that but for the most part, their first breakthrough album was 94. They charted on Rock and Alternative in the US with a single from that album and a few from their next one but didn't have a significantly big hit until Somewhere Out There - 9 years later. That was the third Top 10 on the rock charts in the US but their first crossover hit. The album it came from also hit the Top 10 on the Billboard 200, their first to do so. (Though it's interesting to note that their biggest selling album was 1996's Clumsy, which went Platinum).
Tegan and Sara's first album was released in 1999. Though their breakthrough album in Canada, at least on the college scene, was 2002's If It Was You. Their first taste at US charting was 2004's Walking With A Ghost, which I think scraped the bottom of the alternative chart. 11 years after If It Was You, their now achieving some bigger success with Closer and the album it's from debuted at #3, their first Top 10.
It's interesting to see though that OLP had many more rock hits in the US than T&S have but T&S have 3 Top 40 albums while OLP's only album to make the Top 40 was Gravity. I think, though, that T&S have more potential at maintaining any popularity they are to get with this album because of its sound while OLP's sudden popularity came on the heels of Nickelback but by then, their type of rock was already on the way out so they didn't have much of a chance to maintain popularity outside of rock circles. By the time the Gravity era was over for OLP, they were only able to score a few barely charting songs on Alternative.

I feel like everyone in the relevant age group that would be buying digital downloads today would have purchased "Walking With A Ghost" in 2004.
