I have noticed there is a lot of venom aimed at Lana Del Rey here and at other messageboards. What is it about her, her music, her image, her style, etc. that is so off-putting? It's one thing to not be into her music or her, but the level of dislike is so extreme that it warrants a discussion.

People can spot a con, and don't like being taken for fools.

She is pretty open about being a con so people should REALLY feel like fools if they were ever "taken" by her for even a second. She has been refreshingly open about how she is basically a created project and knows she won't last but is just having fun right now and I respect that in some weird way. It is better to me than people who shriek non-stop about how real and hardcore they are when they are just as much of products. Plus, I am probably also a bit jealous. If I had a rich daddy I would totally invent a character and release a cd too lol. People would whine about it, but shit. You only live once.

Certainly not when she first emerged, when her label was hyping her as some organic indie revelation and downplaying the reality. Sorry, but I don't think an average member of the public is going to find anything "refreshingly open" about Lana Del Rey.

Damn I never saw that from her label. Her label must hate her for giving interviews discussing just how she isn't that LOL. It is also strange to me that you say the public won't find her refreshing. Most of the general public I know seems to have no idea who she is or are generally ambivalent. I have never seen a friend be like OMG SHE IS SUCH A CON!!!!!! The only real hate I have seen comes from certain critics and internet music message boards. Then again, I doubt she cares. She is loaded for life and just doing this for fun, lucky ass bitch.

But even though she is manufactured, she is no more manufactured than other established pop stars, right?
Can't people judge the music on its own merits for how it sounds, lyrics, production, etc.? Or do they feel that since she's a "creation" the music isn't real?

Damn I never saw that from her label. Seriously? Well, I suppose you may have missed when they were platforming her as a viral phenom and trying to hide as much as possible. Then details about her background started leaking and the game was up. Why would she not be honest once things became public knowledge? That would be incredibly stupid. But even though she is manufactured, she is no more manufactured than other established pop stars, right? Can't people judge the music on its own merits for how it sounds, lyrics, production, etc.? Or do they feel that since she's a "creation" the music isn't real? Lana has revealed so little of her own personality to the public that she may as well be a cypher. Nothing about her is relatable and that gives the illusion that she's more manufactured.

As long as the music she makes is good (and it is), I couldn't care less about the character that has been created for her. The purpose of music is to listen to it, not look at the artist or listen to that person speak. Her music is hypnotizing, and that's all I really care about.

I honestly don't know too much, scratch that, nothing about her to say I dislike her. It's interesting to hear you say that she's strongly disliked b/c I usually don't see nor hear people talk about her.

People can spot a con, and don't like being taken for fools. What does that have to do with me thinking her album is one of the best of the year and really enjoying its music? There's nothing foolish about me buying a great album.

Whatever she's doing to her face kinda puts me off. That overly plastic look doesn't do her any favors.

Lana's case is so weird. As far as her music goes I don't think she's manufactured because it hasn't changed from the days she was still Lizzy Grant. About her 'persona' though, well, she still says that she used to live in a trailer park in New Jersey and stuff but has also admitted that her label is the one who came up with her stage name so I don't know what to believe.

She just sounds pretentious to me. Plus this whole persona and image thing. I don't hate or dislike her, but it seems many people call her out for being overhyped and for her looks - nose lol

People can spot a con, and don't like being taken for fools. Thank god nobody on Pulse has ever been taken in by a female singer who's had plastic surgery, can't sing live, is manufactured, controlled by her record label, overhyped and doesn't show much overt personality!!!!! That would literally never happen!!!!!

I don't really see how that stuff is such a big deal. Every pop star markets themselves in some way, and this is just her way of marketing herself. It's still her music that she creates, and its really unique and refreshing.

I dislike her because her music is boring and does absolutely nothing for me. I just don't see the hype.

The difference between Lana and Rihanna (and most of Pulse's faves) is that Lana was being sold as an authentic act. With Rihanna they don't even try, they aren't trying to deceptive.

That's the real reason, by the way. The 'authentic' listeners feel like they're being sold something 'manufactured', the 'pop' listeners feel like they're being sold something 'pretentious'. An attempt to walk the line and appeal to both groups has failed and managed to make everybody feel like they're being deceived. Which is a shame, because the album is excellent.

Pop listeners pick and choose which manufactured act they like or dislike, in reality as people have already mentioned there is little difference between most of them, ofcourse anyone can dislike her music but if someone stans for a Katy Perry or Kesha find another reason to dislike Lana other than she is a manufactured artist.

The same people detesting Lana because she is a "con" are probably the ones saying how "real" of an artist Lady Gaga is with her catalog, how "fresh" Britney's music is with each album release, etc. In other words, it really is limited to these online fan forums. Most of the people I know have never even heard of Lana Del Rey, let alone care whether or not she is a "con." I literally laughed out loud when I read that word in here, call me naive but I have never heard that term being used to describe a musical artist, ever.

con is short for con artist. Someone who basically scams people, usually out of money by using deception and trickery; and the naivete of the mark.

I think some of the stuff that's criticized is lame. Reasons I get that aren't: Thinking she's boring/disliking the music, her lyrics can be pretty bad.
Ooh, an artist who can be called art pop is also into visual things like the way she looks! There's no authenticity in any music; that's a sold image too. This isn't the first artist to do it and some have been critically acclaimed despite the fact that a lot of these things apply to them as well.
I watched the SNL video and frankly didn't think it was so horrible; worse performances have aired on the same show!
I'm impressed how the backlash has prevailed; you'd think people would be over all of that already.

Above all, its the music that matters, and its not like her kind of music is some fake manufactured style. She's been doing that unique sounding stuff for years.
