Sorry but I don't see the point of this thread at all. With the thread you can see how the chart would be with the old formula and what disadvantages and possible benefits.

This, of course, doesn't include the streaming 9non-on-demand) points that sometimes made a difference.

You may as well make a chart that shows "Songs that would have been #1 had there not been 9 songs in front of it that week".

Sorry but I don't see the point of this thread at all. I don't think it's useless. It's a curiosity, but maybe it belongs in the personal charts section, since it's not, you know, news pertaining the music industry.

It is interesting.
I mean, it is way to easy to just debut in the top 10 thanks to frontloaded sales. I didn't think it would change things this much though. Kind of scary.

I would like to see what would have been number one from when Billboard switched the formula on.

Well, I've done something. This counts with the old formula where we just make sales + airplay. In the actual formula, we have on-demand as a third component and airplay's worth it's a little bit stronger than before.

Funny to see that One More Night would've never been #1. And we would have 3 #1 debuts (Boyfriend, Live While We're Young and I Knew You Were Trouble.)

I finally completed the list above. Some curiosities: - Maroon 5 would've never been #1 this year. Payphone and One More Night would've peaked at #2 (OMN still can be #1). - We would've seen 3 #1 debuts this year, aside from Part of Me. Boyfriend, Live While We're Young and I Knew You Were Trouble. - At the 08/04 chart issue, Wide Awake and Call Me Maybe would end up tied at #1. With passive streaming, Billboard should decide who would be #1. I picked Wide Awake though :) - Lights would've peaked at #4. - Longest runners #1's this year if the formula would've never changed: 8 weeks - Somebody that I Used to Know-Gotye ft. Kimbra 6 weeks - Call Me Maybe-Carly Rae Jepsen 5 weeks - Gangnam Style-PSY We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together-Taylor Swift We Are Young-fun. ft. Janelle Monáe 3 weeks - Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)-Kelly Clarkson Whistle-Flo Rida 2 weeks - Set Fire to the Rain-Adele Sexy and I Know It-LMFAO We Found Love-Rihanna ft. Calvin Harris 1 week - Boyfriend-Justin Bieber I Knew You Were Trouble.-Taylor Swift Live While We're Young-One Direction One More Night-Maroon 5 Part of Me-Katy Perry Wide Awake-Katy Perry I think that at the end of it all I prefer the new formula

What I liked about the old chart more was how it was a much better representation of people's opinions of songs. Sales should be the dominant factor, as people are willing to pay for a song and spend their own money. Airplay is basically controlled by the DJs, not the general public, and streaming has too big of a part. If people liked songs enough, they'd go out and buy them. Plus, many artists withhold their songs from streaming outlets.
You can't tell me songs like IKYWT shouldn't have been #1 when so many people bought that song in one week. More people were willing to spend their own money on it than anybody else.

The problem, though, is that you run into people who just don't download music. They'd rather stream because to them, they think there's no point in purchasing music when they can stream it for free. Plus, I buy a song when I first hear it and like it, not when I'm in love with it the most. Therefore, I'm playing it (or streaming it) the most when I like it the most.
Now airplay does need to be reduced, though. I believe 1,000 sales = 1 point, 1.000 AI = 1 point, and 10,000 streams = 1 point is perfect.

I prefer the new methodology. It has really cut down on the number of #1 debuts, which I have always found particularly dubious to begin with.

My main problem with streaming is that: 1. It only tracks people who haven't purchased the songs. People who have may be listening to it nonstop as well. 2. A group of 100 mega fans can put a song on repeat for 24 hours a day for a chart week, and they can give the artist 28 extra chart points just by doing that, which isn't fair. For every person who does that 24/7 repeat thing, they can give their artist 0.288 chart points by themselves, and when they join together, that can cause a huge disruption.

I'd still like a "hot 100 with old ratio of sales/airplay + new ratio of streaming" as opposed to "new formula" and "old formula". The old formula is meh due to the #1 surges; but the new formula is meh due to the airplay weighting.

For every person who does that 24/7 repeat thing, they can give their artist 0.288 chart points by themselves, and when they join together, that can cause a huge disruption. 1. Not necessarily. There are many people who both stream and download. But the plays of people who don't download should mimick the plays of those people who do. 2. The places where streaming is actually monitored has limits to what you can play. I think the only one that may not is Spotify, but I'm sure they have certain restrictions too. For example, it may only allow a person to listen to one song a maximum of five times per day. They do this because eveytime the song is streamed, the company has the pay the artist and/or record label. It can get pretty expensive if a bunch of people just sit there are let a song play over and over again. But of course this issue exists with all three formats. A group of fans can raly to all download a song on a certain day or rally to request a song on the radio. Plus, the public doesn't directly controll the radio, so that can cause some issues there. They each have their downfall, but all three of them combined makes it more equal. Sort of like a checks and balances type of thing we see in the formation of the government.

If Billboard had never changed the formula, this would be just the 1st week of One More Night at #1.
